Drum-Off Grand Finals in L.A. at Wiltern on Jan 8th 2010

Recommended Posts

On January 8th at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, Guitar Center will have their Drum-Off Grand Finals. The event is both a once-in-a-lifetime concert featuring some of today's biggest rock drummers, and also the finals of a nationwide search for the next great undiscovered drummer.

On the performance end of things, Tommy Lee is helping to put together a project called "Bezerk" which will feature Chad Smith (Red Hot Chilli Peppers), Matt Sorum (Velvet Revolver, Guns 'n Roses), Jose Pasillas (Incubus), Abe Cunningham (Deftones), and many more. Jason Bonham will also be doing a tribute to John Bonham and there will be an exclusive collaboration between Danny Carey (Tool) and Brann Dailer (Mastodon).

As far as the competition goes, over 5,000 drummers tried out and the top 5 will be battling head to head at this event. The winner will receive $40,000 in cash, prizes, and endorsement deals… past winners have gone on to play with Prince, The Mars Volta, Suicidal Tendencies, and many more huge artists.

Last year's winner, Jerome Flood II, performed his winning routine on Last Call With Carson Daly, which you can check out here:

Guitarist Joe Bonamassa via Twitter:

"Kudos to Jason and Glenn for inviting me along to the Drum Off...to play Moby Dick with those guys was wicked!!"

...and in a related development...this from Classic Rock Magazine Newsletter:

Hughes' New Supergroup will be an 'Orgasm Of The Mind'

Glenn Hughes has confirmed he's the vocalist in a new 'supergroup'.

The band are already in the studio working on their debut album with producer Kevin Shirley.

So far, none of the other musicians involved have been identified, although rumours have so far suggested that anyone from the following list might (or might not) be in the line-up: David Coverdale, Joe Bonamassa, Jason Bonham, Ken Hensley, Jordan Rudess. and Jimmy Page!

Right now, the clever money is on Bonamassa being the guitarist.

Talking about the band, the always understated Hughes says: "It is gonna rock. and you're gonna get it! The new band is now runnin'. it is a spectacle. with the most amazin' players. an orgasm for the mind!"

Hughes is also working with producer Shirley on the remixes for a reissue of Deep Purple's 1975 album Come Taste The Band.

There was a video tribute to John before Jason and friends played Moby Dick. I hadn't seen some if the footage in the video tribute before: it may have been home video footage and may have included some outtakes from Song Remains the Same (just speculating).

Moby Dick was 5 1/2 minutes or so. There was video footage rolling behind Jason as he played. At times Jason stopped playing at let the footage of John soloing play and at other times Jason played along with the footage of John. Jason said a few words afterwards while accepting the award for John.

I'm sure some YouTube footage will show up soon. I know someone with a crude, distorted mono recording of it.

Is it possible that the line-up for the "supergroup" is actually: Glenn Hughes, Jason Bonham, and Jimmy Page? Joe Bonamassa looks like he's booked now through May (with shows in June and July) going from Moscow to the US then to Europe - doesn't seem he'd have time for a "supergroup".

Sadly, this only lasts about a minute... Jason played along with John (featured on a large screen behind Jason). If anyone knows of a link to a full version of this, please share :)
