pagemccartney95
Most of the best bands are British(Beatles, Stones, Led Zep, Pink Floyd), so, yeah, I kind of agree with you.
kaiser
In my top 10 favorite bands the majority are English. Seven of my favorites are The Beatles, Stones, Who, Zeppelin, Clash, Smiths, Radiohead. The Brits would like to lay claim to Hendrix as well but no, he's still ours despite his first rhythm section. dazedcat
Well way back in the day that's pretty much all I ever listened to. English bands back then were so much better than most of the American groups it wasn't even close. So if you're talking late 60's to mid 70's then yes, I'd have to agree with you. leddy
Most of the best bands are British(Beatles, Stones, Led Zep, Pink Floyd), so, yeah, I kind of agree with you. Add Deep Purple, Yes etc and we have been blessed with some great bands. Although Rush are amazing and they are not English, the one thing I like about America though is they are very much open to all kinds of music, where as here in England the press are so into a very narrow band of music and if its new they just love it, if its over 5 years old they hate it, where as the Americans have such a vast taste in music, eeven continental Europe are more varied, you just have a look at the vast amount of bands they have on their festivals that could contain, metal, rock, pop and blues etc on the one bill where as in England we have festivals for certain genres of music. But thats getting off topic...

leddy
While most of the greatest bands may be English, they wouldn't exist if it wasn't for their American influences Very true as America was influenced by Africa, it all goes full circle. The greatest thing that we did was to repackage early American popular music and sell it back to them And Rush are Canadian Yes I do know that, I should have said, I was just trying to point out that there are great bands outside of England too
ledzepfvr
I have always thought that the best bands come from england. Does anyone else agree with that. I agree that alot of great bands came out of England, however the US has had its fair share of great bands and their music that I love to listen to. BUCK'EYE' DOC
My favorite US band in the 70's was The Eagles. I also was (am) a big Jackson Browne fan. The Edgar Winter Group, Johnny Winter, ZZ Top, The Marshall Tucker Band, The Guess Who, The Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, Rare Earth, Santana, The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, are some of the best American Bands from the 70's. Then you have Metallica, Van Halen, Megadeth, Nirvana from the 80's and 90's. And many others. But still, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Queen, Pink Floyd, The Who, they are all without question some of the best bands of the era, and all are English, of course. Edited to say that I forgot to mention The Beatles, of course, from the 60's. The uncomprable British band of all time, in my opinion.
lead ballon
You guys forgot to mention The Yardbirds and Cream. Alice Cooper says The Yardbirds are his favourite band I'm also pretty sure Eddie Van Halen also knew all Cream songs on guitar at the age of 12. Swede
Does anyone else agree with that. No, not really. There were a lot of incredible US bands that never made it to the charts, and even less to the UK and European charts. Same goes for all bands outside of US and UK. LarryD
Most of my favorite bands happen to be English, so generally I'd agree with this thread. However many of them fall under the radar as far as popularity, so I'd re-phrase the question as to; Are most of your favorite bands the same old boring drivel played day in and day out on classic rock radio or a bit more obscure than that? greenman
I'd say a big difference in the 60's was that english bands seemed to have more of a contraction of talent which stuck together for longer. In the US it seemed to me you tended to have one person be the focus of the band or quickly become the focus after a short time. In the UK you'd often have two, three or more people involved who could easily have been the focus of a sucessful band.
leddy
America may be more open to music as a whole country but Americans as individuals tend to have very narrow tastes. We tend to like what's fed to us whether it's top 40 or the same old classic rock or whatever other genre. I agree though we have a greater loyalty to the artists we like where the English press & fans love to build an artist up to unrealistic expectations just to tear them apart simply because it's time to do so. One thing I like about England & Europe is that they, & not America, promote newer acts to rock fans whether they're good or not. They seem to know that change is good & that after all it's only rock n roll. BUT i LIKE IT Its the same here alot of people like whats fed to them , its not alot so its very narrow. Although the press here are being very upbeat about TCV which is good .
Joao
In the past, 60's and 70's mostly, sure many of the best bands we're English but in the more recent decades I don't think so. For the past 2 or 3 decades the best bands have been American with some exceptions obviously.
