Led Zeppelin Photo Mysteries

Sorry Steve. Maybe it was 75? They are standing together against a wall. Maybe it was another event altogether. I need to get my stuff out of storage.

It's probobly the Grammy awards after John and Yoko got back together in 1975. Yoko has a white gown on with feathers and John is wearing a sparkly big Elvis pen? Yeah, that's when it is. He and Paul Simon were presenters, though I did read it was David Bowie who brought John to a Zep concert. John was interested as Julian was a fan.

Hi all, I was just wondering if anyone knows about this picture. Firstly, is it real? And if so who is the girl? Thanks.

Hi April Lynn

I had responded to a query regarding the above photo on a thread entitled "who's that bloke with Percy".

Here is a copy of my reply to SteveAJones on that thread regarding the above:-

"Her name is Ashley Hamm. She is a freelance photographer who now lives in Nashville. The photograph was taken in Knoxville. Her professional Facebook page gives a contact email address as ahammphotography@yahoo.com, so if you want to know when it was taken, and perhaps get the story as to how she met Jimmy etc, you could email her"...

The photograph was taken in Knoxville.

If so then it's most likely March 3, 1995. On that day Jimmy & Robert were scheduled to fly from Dekalb Airport in Atlanta to McGee Airport in Knoxville, check into the Hyatt Regency and perform at the Thompson-Bolling Arena. The very next day they were scheduled to fly to Memphis, perform at the Pyramid then fly immediately after the show to Miami.

Thanks saj,

You have a brilliant eye for detail, as always :notworthy:

Obviously, this is from a newspaper. When and why were they in Miami if there were no gig dates? Was it a point of origin into the US for the 1973 Tour?

It's my understanding Led Zeppelin may have arrived in Miami a few days prior to the Atlanta date. They definitely stayed several days at the Doral Hotel on Collins Avenue. In fact they could be found relaxing there on their days off before and after the Jacksonville concert on May 7th 1973. On May 6th Peter spent the day fishing on Biscayne Bay before returning to the hotel for an interview. On May 8th 1973, another day off, Page, Plant and Grant conversed with journalist Lisa Robinson beside the hotel pool.

Coincidentally, Maggie Bell and The Bee Gees also passed thru the Doral Hotel during this time.

...some further details from Richard Cole STH, Page 202...

"I had flown into Atlanta two days before the band to meet with Tom Hulett, the Concerts West promoter in the Southeast....On May3, the night before the concert, the band was scheduled to fly into Atlanta. I had joined them in Miami and sensed the nervous tension as we prepared to board the flight.

Purported to be taken in Detroit by the seller. Unfortunately, they didn't play in Michigan in 1967 and only at the Grande Ballroom in 1968.

Any thoughts?

Fifth Dimension was a bowling alley, Twentieth Century Lanes. It was converted into a concert venue designed by Rich Ahern. The building later became a restaurant (The Whiffle Tree).

Kind of a non-standard shape (re: the Yardbirds photos) if it were originally a bowling alley.

This is not a where, when or who question, but a what...

What instrument is Jimmy playing? Is this a Mandoloncello? Anybody knows?

Yes, it is a Giannini Craviola 12 string. I have a 6 string version of this guitar, and they have a wonderful sound. One described as a cross between a Martin and a lute.

^^^ I was about ready to say that it's from May 18, 1977 because of JPJ in the white outfit, Page in the full Poppy suit, Plant in the red jacket, white towel on the full stack of Marshall cabinets with 2 bottles, positioning of the stage right overhead drum mics... but then it looks like most every date in late May/early June 1977. It would be nice to see if there were other pics to see the power amp racks all in a row or what Bonzo was wearing.

Looks like a rather small stage for a '77 show. Could that help?
