Wolfman
WOW!!! We had seats right near the stage so it was great to see two legends up close. Beck is just on another level. His music is so complicated yet he makes it look so simple. He looked cool as hell with a black vest and sunglasses. The speed and texture of his playing is amazing. There is a reason all his contemporaries think he's the best. The highlight of his set was "Led Boots" and "A Day In The Life" (which I believe he won a Grammy for). His bassist, Rhonda Smith, was incredible. Most of the set was played with an orchestra which added another element to his music. I just wish Beck didn't drop "People Get Ready" which I saw him do in LA years back. An almost perfect 45 minute set. After a 15 minute break, out came EC in a nice blue denim suit (he's growing his hair out too aka the Journey Man period). This was my 12th time seeing Eric (who now leads Robert by one show). He started off with a nice acoustic set before switching to his Strat. Nice set list. I don't know if he wasn't trying to outshine Jeff but it did seem that Eric was a little subdued compared to his normal playing. He had some great jams and solos but it seemed like on certain songs like "I Shot the Sheriff" that Eric held back a little bit. Maybe he didn't want to piss Jeff off and get creamed by him in the third set. No complaints here though. "Little Queen of Spades" was the highlight to me. Steve Gadd on drums was great as usual. Then without a break, came the main event. EC and Beck together. It was so cool to see these guys go at it with their different styles of playing. Hate to say it but Jeff dominated (not that it was a contest) and this is coming from a EC-freak. I really loved "Moon River" and "Outside Woman Blues". You wish these two could play longer. It was that damn good. Great concert for sure. If these two do a national tour down the road (like EC-Winwood wound up doing), do yourself a favor and go. Here's some reviews and the setlist off Eric's site. I'd love to hear what other on here who went thought of the show too. P.S. Jeff is doing a small venues tour this summer including the Wellmont Theatre in Montclair, NJ. Eric Clapton's and Jeff Beck's six concert, four city mini-tour hit New York City's Madison Square Garden on Thursday evening, 18 February following two shows in London the previous weekend. Although the shows were identical to London in format - Jeff and Eric performed "together and apart" - there were some differences. Unlike the London shows, Jeff did not have any guest vocalists during his set. And, as expected, the duo dropped "Hi Ho Silver Lining" as the encore to the disappointment of some fans as Jeff hasn't performed it on American shores since 1968. Instead, the guitar maestros ended their first night at the Garden with Crossroads. One fan who checked in with Where's Eric! shortly after the show ended from their iPhone said, "The big surprise during Jeff's set was Nessun Dorma - beautiful. Was surprised that EC started with a bunch of acoustic numbers as I've avoided checking the setlists on whereseric.com, but it was great to hear 'I've Got A Rock n Roll Heart unplugged. EC really tore up the fretboard on Sheriff. The standouts during their set togther for me were 'Moon River', 'You Need Love' and 'Crossroads'." Another said, "I wish I could go to the three remaining shows on the tour. 'Great' doesn't been to describe it." Another night-owl emailed Where's Eric! to say, "For me, Jeff's set was all about 'Big Block'; Eric's set was all about 'Little Queen of Spades." Together, my favs were 'You Need Love', 'Wee Wee Baby' and of course, 'Crossroads.' badgeholder
Sounds great. Narada on drums! He's great, the original Led Boots drummer. I didn't know Tal Wilkenfeld was no longer on bass, I was hoping to catch that particular lineup when Jeff hits LA. But I'm sure Rhonda was great. BUCK'EYE' DOC
Forgot to mention that I did see one celebrity. Joan Rivers was there. No Jimmy, just Joan. Anyone have the setlist from Friday? Here you go: 19 February 2010 - Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck Band Lineup JEFF BECK & HIS BAND Jeff Beck - guitar Jason Rebello - keyboards Rhonda Smith - bass Narada Michael Walden - drums ERIC CLAPTON & HIS BAND Eric Clapton - guitar / vocals Chris Stainton - keyboards Walt Richmond - keyboards Willie Weeks - bass Steve Gadd - drums Michelle John - backing vocals Sharon White - backing vocals Special Guest(s) During Jeff Beck's set 30 Piece Orchestra * Set List Jeff Beck 01. A Day In The Life * 11. Nessun Dorma * Eric Clapton 01. Driftin' - acoustic 02. Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out - acoustic 03. Running On Faith - acoustic 04. Shake Your Moneymaker 02. Moon River 03. You Need Love 04. Outside Woman Blues 05. Little Brown Bird 06. Wee Wee Baby 07. (I Want To Take You) Higher 08. Crossroads - encore It was a good concert. Jeff was amazing! I think that most people were there to see Eric, but they were blown away by Jeff! He received a bit of a standing ovation after A Day In The Life. People were dazzled by his virtuosity. He received great applause after his solos when playing with Eric, maybe more so than what Eric received. I really liked Little Brown Bird, where Jeff's guitar sounded like a bird tweeting! I Want to Take You Higher really rocked. There was an audience sing-a-long on I've Got A Rock and Roll Heart. I loved the song, but was a little disappointed that Eric played it since it is the song in his T-Mobile commercial. A bit of (subliminal?) advertising which I didn't appreciate. But the audience loved it, as well. I Shot the Sherriff had a reggae vibe to it, ala Bob Marley's version. I thought that it was one of Eric's best, but I liked all of his songs that he performed that night. My favorites of Jeff's performance was Nessun Dorma and Mna Na Heireann with the orchestra. Jeff's new band was really good, as well as was the orchestra. Eric seemed a bit more subdued than when I saw him a year ago. I liked the longer hair, not so much the glasses, lol. He seemed to be a bit heavier than last year, and not quite as agile in his guitar playing. But still, he was great! Uncomprable! He didn't speak much to the audience, as usual, but did shout out "Thank You!" after most songs. And he did point to and say "Jeff Beck" after Jeff's solos, lol. My seats weren't the greatest. My best photos are of the video screen, not the greatest either. MSG is so big and we were not very close to the stage. But I was happy to be there to witness that performance of these two great rock guitar players and former Yardbirds members. I hope that they continue to "Rock On" for a long time. BUCK'EYE' DOC
Does this song remind you of anything? It would have been great to have Jimmy come out and the three former Yardies break into Whole Lotta Love at the end of this song!
