Today In Led Zeppelin History

Given a feature length film by a local director proved inconclusive I'm thinking belief in this gig will remain a leap of faith. The director presumably exhausted all the conventional means of research. We need a ticket stub or a photograph to surface.

Agreed.  The digging to find something conclusive would have to be incredibly exhaustive (and exhausting!) and for why?  Maybe it's better off as a Led Zeppelin Mystery.

1969 - Kinetic Playground - Chicago, IL (Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin) Headliner: Vanilla Fudge

1975 - The Spectrum - Philadelphia, PA

Plant's voice has pretty much healed while Page's finger has definitely healed! The performance doesn't crawl like other 1975 shows, it runs! Trampled Underfoot is proof of this. Plant adds a few new lyrics to The Song Remains The Same and at the start of The Rain Song. Page enters late for the bow section in Dazed And Confused but ends the song with a new riff. Whole Lotta Love is an abbreviated version without the middle section. It goes straight into Black Dog with Plant singing most of its original lyrics. This show is also the one where rowdy audience made its appearance that caused Robert comments: "Can we advocate that people stay in their seats? It's not very pleasant to see situations like that right under your nose, so can we all keep cool!"

1971 - Sunset Sound Studios - Los Angeles, CA - Stairway To Heaven (Alternate Mix)

Mixing session of tapes originally recorded at Island Studio no.1, London, England on December 5th, 1970.

Whooah! The legendary Sunset Sound mix. The added reverb in the beginning is a little distracting while listening on headphones, on a proper stereo it would be fine (ambience is really nice). First major difference: the recorders are hard cut instead of faded out at 2:13. This is a bit jarring but works with what Page said recently about each part of Stairway having definite transitions. There is an amazing clarity to Bonzo's drums always fascinating to hear. Immediately after the solo, the very ending of the solo you hear Page slide down the neck. Then there are extra guitar overdubs as well as missing vocal overdubs from Plant. In the final album mix, Plant is double or triple tracked. In this version there's only one track - the lower one. There's a few extra guitar licks right after "to be a rock and not to roll" - it sounds almost like he's mimicking parts of the solo.

A member here, Bluecongo made this mash up of 75 film clips and synced it up to audio about 10 years ago. Thank you, Bluecongo!

A great show! It may have been a blizzard outside but the Garden was rocking this night! "We came four blocks in the snow to get here ... you realise that? People were calling me on the telephone today and saying 'Is it gonna be on?' For a minute I was wondering about my anatomy, then I realised there was some discrepancy about the weather. Isn't it good though that it snows? Doesn't it change the vibe of the city? I think it's great!" The band is in excellent form and delivers a great show. Robert sounds good and strong, Jonesy and Bonzo are amazing as always, and Jimmy is incendiary tonight, especially at the end of Sick Again. He extends the solo in Over The Hills And Far Away to an incredible length and soars. No Quarter is dedicated to Jones that "...made Monthy Python's Flying Circus a flop in New York" tonight and his imppecably clean fingernails. Moby Dick is like a hurricane and Dazed And Confused just blows everybody out to the cosmic level! A bunch of heavy solid encores with an excellent Heartbreaker with some lyrics of Elvis Presley's That's Alright Mama thrown in closing this amazing eveing. This is definitely a triumph for the entire band and, not only a strong concert but also probably the best from the 1975 US Tour. "Ladies and gentlemen of New York ... you're too much ... and we ain't so bad ourselves!" and the show was over.

A great show! The band is strong, Robert's voice is in fair shape and Jimmy is blazing, especially on a great and very long version of Dazed And Confused and an epic Stairway To Heaven solo. Roll Over Beethoven is only a short vocal rehearsal but one of the encores features Ronnie Wood on second guitar, dueling with Page as they trade licks in an extended jam that sounds killer when Jonesy and Bonham jam behind it.

Two very high powered sets with different moods and feels to them. Both feature a band playing with fiery intensity! Robert hits some of the highest screams and is raw emotion, ranging from the primordial wails of How Many More Times and As Long As I Have You to the pain and suffering of Babe I'm Gonna Leave You. The band's assault is relentless as well. This was the second to last show from the first US tour of 1969. Again, the group ended (?) with Bonham's drum solo. Pat's Delight

1974 - Rainbow Theatre - London - Roy Harper's Valentine's Day Concert

lz19740214_05.jpg

Jimmy Page, Robert Plant & John Bonham attended Roy Harper's Valentine's Day concert as part of the all-star band, The Intergalactic Elephant Band, with Roy Harper on vocals and guitar, Ronnie Lane on bass, Max Middleton on keyboards and Keith Moon and John Bonham on drums. Robert Plant acted as MC.

1975 - Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum - Uniondale, NY

This is a magical show ... one of the best from 1975! The Valentine's Day reflected Plant to some special comments tonight about the Pagans: "Today is one of the last of the pagan traditions that is carried on into the 20th Century. It's the day for sowing the wild seeds. In fact, now they call it St. Valentine's Day ... so, happy St. Valentine's Day. I think we should dedicate this show to St. Valentine." Since I've Been Loving You is played for the first time out of three on this tour and the playing and energy of this show make it a real special concert. Plant: "Who knows what it's gonna sound like, but it's something we really used to dig playing." No Quarter is great and Dazed And Confused is beyond words. The encores are funky and long, and the rare second encore of Heartbreaker has a long blues interlude inserted in Jimmy's solo.

1984 - Jimmy Page - New York City, NY

On this day Jimmy Page celebrated Johns' 42nd birthday jamming with Eric Clapton, Charlie Watts, John Entwistle, and Louis Bertignac.

"I’d known Jimmy

forever. We came from the same town, Epsom, Surrey, and we’d even had a little band together for about five minutes. I’d got him a few sessions in the past, and when eventually he decided to put Led Zeppelin together he asked if I was interested. The sessions were actually booked under the name of The Yardbirds and I had no idea what it would sound like, but when they started playing I was completely blown away. I don’t think I’ve come down yet from the buzz I got from being in the room, it was utterly inspiring and incredibly simple to record. They were well rehearsed and masters at what they did, which is why it took only nine days, including mixing.

The show itself is an excellent closing night for the first half of the tour. The band carries the momentum of their great closing show in Nassau. During his intro for The Song Remains The Same, Plant refers to Kansas City and that John Bonham was arrested there once! Before No Quarter John Paul Jones is finishing a gin and tonic before he can start playing and tonight's version is very strong, sounding very dark and foreboding. Dazed And Confused and Stairway To Heaven are both outstanding. The encores are the only let down in this performance.

Plant refers to Kansas City and that John Bonham was arrested there once! Yes, following the Memorial Hall gig (Nov 5 1969) for public intoxication in the hotel lobby. He was released from jail after a few hours.

You've red-crossed my Happy Birthday?! You can't do that to albums! I mean you can, and you did, but you don't. You can shatter this album's happiness. Albums are alive. They can rock, they can reach, climb, fall, etc. It's getting it's Happy Birthday back before it gets a complex and grows up goth or emo.

Other than that, thank you very much Jonesy. I'm not sure when the Firm album was released in the UK and Japan. Thanks for the corrections. Would you care to post some of these updates sometimes while Deborah J is gone or at least the Pre/Post dates?

1972 - Memorial Drive Park - Adelaide, Australia

This was the second stop (after Perth which has a tape that hasn’t surfaced yet, according to rumor) of their only Australian tour. Really great, crisp sound in this powerful and excellent show. The opening salvo is awesome, and Jimmy plays one of the best solos in Stairway To Heaven, and it's only 1972! Dazed And Confused is truly awesome and a riotous medley closes the show. The crowd is going nuts throughout the show, with Robert telling them to shut up, and it's not hard to see why.

1993 - Page with Mason Ruffner - Muddy Waters Club - New Orleans, LA.

On this day in 1993, it is said that I jammed with Mason Ruffner at the Muddy Water's club in New Orleans.I don’t have too much recollection of this, but I met him at the Old Absinthe House bar on Bourbon Street in New Orleans during the Firm tour of 1985 and he became a good friend.Mason is a blues guitarist and vocalist in a real Texan tradition. He played as support to the second 'Firm Tour' and also opened shows for the Outrider Tour, later in 1988. Mason also played on Bob Dylan’s 'Oh Mercy' album, which was recorded in New Orleans and produced by Daniel Lanois.~JP
