Led Zeppelin on stage at the St Matthews Baths Hall in Ipswich in 1971

IT was a concert that has gone down in Suffolk music legend - the night one of the biggest rock bands in the world played at a converted swimming pool.

But there are no official recordings of Led Zeppelin's gig at St Matthews Baths Hall in Ipswich in November 1971; only a handful of patched-together recordings from a small band of bootleggers.

So rock fan Vic Kemp could not believe his luck when he found a CD at a car boot sale featuring a recording of the whole concert.

Rather contradictory article, says the only previous recordings were by "bootleggers" then says this recording is from the audience. I'd guess its the same sources as have been released a few times in the last decade, possible a net remaster.

I enjoyed the article thanks for posting the link and also Jonathan Barnes blog where he gave lots if info on the concert the comments Robert made (some funny stuff :D ) and Jimmy's solo on Dazed and Confused.

What a treat for the people who attended the concert.

I am going to go into the lion's den probably be sorry for it but I don't understand why all the snark?

Mr. Barnes said "there are no official recordings of Led Zeppelin's gig at St Matthews Baths Hall in Ipswich in November 1971; only a handful of patched-together recordings from a small band of bootleggers".

"So rock fan Vic Kemp could not believe his luck when he found a CD at a car boot sale featuring a recording of the whole concert." Do all of you know different or have recordings that are better than what this guy found at a bargain? I think he was just happy to find something from what I gather is rare version of the whole concert if not then why don't you please say how many copies are out there who owns them and why this is not rare?

If I found something like this for next to nothing and from what Mr. Barnes has researched from what he states in his blog lots of good info on the show, I would be mondo happy!

So please all you slagging explain why?

Theres no evidense that the recordings he's found is any different from those that have been circulated on bootleg and by fans on CDR for years(which are actually pretty good). That he seems to think theres some massive difference between a recordings made by a "bootlegger" and someone with a mic in the audience doesnt really give me much confidense either.

The guy may be knowledgeble about other areas but doesnt seem to know much about unoffical live recordings.

That guy really seems to enjoy what he found.

If he's this enthusiastic about this concert alone, he just might go nuts if he starts finding more on the internet :P.

He seriously may not leave his house until he gets every concert he can find :) :)

I say, Good luck to the journey ahead :)

I appreciate both your responses greenman and Yupter. Are the ones you speak of complete recording of the concert or parts that was what I gathered he was expressing as the difference on this cd?

I took the time to email Mr. Barnes and sent him the link to this thread, maybe he has more insight on this than he discussed in his newspaper article will see if he responds and if so I will post his response or maybe he will answer here directly.

I personally have the EV definitive edition, which is the complete concert (audience).

I was hoping he had found some soundboard source

U.K. Mans Finds Rare Zeppelin Bootleg In Car Trunk

(RTTNews) - A man from Ipswich, England, has uncovered a previously undiscovered complete recording from a legendary Led Zeppelin concert in 1971. While collectors have been aware of partial recordings from the band's November 1971 show at St. Matthew's Baths Hall in Ipswich, it was believed that no complete recording ever existed.

While looking through the trunk of a car full of items being sold, however, Vic Kemp found the pristine recording, which is thought to be one of only three recordings made at the show.

"I was going through a stand of CDs at the car boot at Portman Road and the guy who was selling them said 'you might be interested in this,'" Kemp told a local newspaper. "It doesn't have a proper cover and the title is just written in felt-tip pen."

"I think the date of the concert is wrong, as it says 1972, but the recording is not too bad at all," he added. "It's on a double CD. It must have been recorded by someone standing at the front with a microphone. You can hear (singer) Robert Plant talking to the audience quite clearly."

poortom,

If you read my post I asked why I really wanted to know since there where some pretty negative responses posted on the article.

I got my answer I don't necessarily agree with the slagging and I do hope Jonathan Barnes the author of the newspaper article will when he returns to his office March 22nd address this on his own.

Without knowing what exactly he found anything is possible happy that Mr. Kent feels he found something special. He is enjoying his find so cheers to him!

Is that light enough? ;)

I didn't mean to sound like a jackass with my first post, but lots of people are making it more than what it is.

Although everyone might not know, these bootlegs are a lot more common than those articles are portraying. This is why I'm having a hard time understanding why this show is getting so much attention. Unless there's some earth shattering historical moment about this show I still won't get it.

The articles would be saying the same thing if I had given that guy my personal burn of Zeppelin's LA 72 show.

I agree with kiss of fire, cheers to Vic for enjoying what he found and I hope he finds them all. It can only get better from here. :) :)

If this was a new fan posting here they'd most likely get a very duifferent response("glad you enjoyed it but its nothing speical" or similar) but a jurnolist should really be doing more research before publishing an article like that.

I received a very nice response from Jonathan Barnes today.

I asked for permission to post it he was very gracious and gave the ok.

Here is the email with my name deleted for obvious reasons.

"Dear ,

Thanks for your email and sorry for not replying earlier – I’ve been away.

I’m not really surprised at that response to the story. It’s not a rare find in the grander scheme of things and I’m well aware that copies have been around for a while.

I was asked to do the story by my editor, who had heard indirectly about the man who found it. Once I checked it out, I realized it was not a rare find but it was something I hadn’t heard before and was something that I thought lots of people would be interested in.

It’s more the local angle we were interested in – Zeppelin playing what was a tiny venue in our home town. The details – things Plant said between songs etc – were nice little additions.

When the news story was posted on the web it was given (not by me) a slightly over-enthusiastic headline and was picked up and re-reported as a rare find, which people have rightly questioned.

On my blog post I’ve hopefully explained the situation a little better. It’s just a nice little curiosity with a particular local interest. I’ve basically just turned the spotlight on it for a nostalgia feature.

Interestingly, I’ve had an email from someone who was at the gig and claims to have taken pictures. So if I can get hold of them and publish them, I will do so…

Thanks for your words of encouragement anyway, it’s appreciated.

Regards,

Jonathan Barnes"
