I was lucky enough to see the final show of their US tour last year in Atlantic City from the front row and hung out with the band afterwards. They have the guitar player from Heart playing with them. They have sooo many good songs. One after another after another. They just kept coming. This is a great interview with Paul. One of the best shows I ever saw was Bad Company, 1976 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. I always did love the Mott The Hoople-Bad Company-David Bowie-Ian Hunter connection. SteveAJones Posted November 4, 2010 Share Posted November 4, 2010 (edited) Paul Rodgers revealed -CLASSIC ROCKER Part-time South Surrey resident chats with the Now about fronting Queen for four years, his work with African Children's Choir and the time he chimed in on one of his hit songs with a guy at Crescent Beach By Tom Zillich, Surrey Now Tuesday, October 06, 2009 He's arguably Surrey's most famous part-time resident.He's a member of British rock royalty, for sure, having gigged with the likes of Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Pink Floyd's David Gilmour, Queen and other fellow chart-topping artists. He's Paul Rodgers, and the Now finally tracked him down for an in-person interview last week, after several years of trying. The well-travelled singer/songwriter prefers to keep a low profile locally as he splits his time among the world's concert stages, recording studios and homes here and in the Okanagan Valley. In the rock world, Rodgers is most notable for his clear, husky vocals on a string of mid-1970s hits with the bands Free and Bad Company, including "All Right Now," "Feel Like Making Love" and "Can't Get Enough." His voice can be heard on some 30 albums, with sales totalling more than 90 million copies. One day, while out walking at Crescent Beach about a decade ago, Rodgers came upon a guy seated on a bench singing "Feel Like Making Love" with an acoustic guitar. What happened next is the stuff of rock 'n' roll fantasy. "I sang a few lines of the song as I walked by and the guy said, 'Wow, you're not bad, you're pretty good at singing that song!' He didn't really turn around and look at me, so he had no idea who I was, and that I actually sang that song originally.... It was funny." Raised in the town of Middlesbrough in northeast England, Rodgers moved to Canada after falling for Cynthia Kereluk, "a B.C. girl" who was schooled at Simon Fraser University and won the Miss Canada 1984 title and hosted a long-running TV fitness program called The Everyday Workout. "I was commuting backwards and forwards (from England) for awhile, when we first met 12 years ago," Rodgers said, "and I stayed longer and longer, so eventually I just didn't go home. My house was empty, you know, for months. So I finally said to her, 'I think I live here, don't I?' And she said, 'Yeah, I think you do, you better get your residency and stuff, a driver's license and all that.' So I did." Kereluk now acts as Rodgers' business manager, as boss of the Summerland-based Paul Rodgers Office (P.R.O.). Last week, the couple enthusiastically championed African Children's Choir during its 25th-anniversary concert in Vancouver. Rodgers first heard of the choir through his Queen bandmates on a trip to South Africa a few years ago. "It's amazing what they do," Rodgers told the Now during a press event at a Ladner church, where the choir rehearsed before its performance last Tuesday. That night, Rodgers shared the stage with the joyful choir at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver gala, along with Sir Bob Geldof, Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers and others. "It's a very moving experience performing with the choir, because they're so in tune with what they do," Rodgers said. "It's strange, because I've been a singer for 40 years -- is it? And I've lived that life and then I'm presented with an opportunity to do something like this, which is just for the sake of doing it, and I want to do it -- give something back, I suppose, but that's a bit of a clich?. It just feels good to do this and help out." In recent years, the Grammy-nominated Rodgers toured and recorded with Queen -- a tough but manageable assignment for him to replace the band's late vocalist, legendary Freddie Mercury. He spent four years singing with the band on its first full-blown tour since 1982. The concerts were billed as Queen Paul Rodgers, spotlighting the singer in stadiums for the first time since the mid-1980s, when he toured as The Firm with ex-Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page. "Where did that time go?" he asked, rhetorically, about his time with Queen. "That was longer than I was with Free, which amazed me, because when (guitarist) Brian (May) first called me, he asked if I wanted to do just a few shows, for fun, in Europe. And yeah, that sounded good, but all of a sudden four years flew by. It was great, and this is a result of that, directly -- meeting Nelson Mandela and getting involved with the (African Children's) Choir." Next month, Rodgers will return to England for some one-off solo dates, followed in February by several concerts with a reunited Bad Company. As for Queen, Rodgers says it was time well spent. "We've left it at the point where we did two world tours and live DVDs, and we recorded a studio album or original material, so I want to move away a little bit and do other things, but I've left the door open if they want me back.... At the end of the day, I felt that we made a lot of people happy." These days, Rodgers and his wife spend most of their time in the Okanagan. "That's where our animals are," Kereluk-Rodgers explained. "I do rescues. It's a lot of work, with 19 animals. Those are our children, really." The couple's charity work involves groups such as African Children's Choir. "It's such a great cause," Kereluk-Rodgers said, "because most of these kids are orphans on both sides. The choir becomes family for them." "The thing is," Rodgers added, "I'm still learning about all of this, what's been going on in Africa and how these kids are being treated. It's huge, and I can see why the organization is so overwhelmed, but they've been at it for 25 years and they know what they're doing. It's all connected through music, which is another reason why I love being involved. Now why oh why can't we have more set ups similar to that. It was awesome...most of all for the large space free of clutter, and semi hidden monitors. I Hate those big azz monitors like Planty has on his stage...and still using a song-sheet....holy ____. It's almost like a barrier from the front row, maybe he is so sick of the same old OLD regulars he just doesn't want to see 'em. The other thing I Loved about this show....from a female point of view here....FINALLY some Young good lookin' guys!!!! Oh yes, EYE candy for the ladies never ever fails.
