Berlin 7.7.80: No Achilles?

Been collecting 1980 shows recently and noticed that there's no Achilles Last Stand on the final gig. Can't see it listed on any versions anywhere.

Anyone know for sure that they definitely didn't play it? That would be the only 1980 show where they didn't, apart from Nuremberg of course. In fact, it would probably be the only show since 1977 where they didn't play it.

Thought this was pretty spooky at first, but then noticed there's a fade-out between SIBLY & White Summer....?

They didn't play "Achilles" in Vienna, either. My guess is either Page or Bonham just weren't up to it for whatever reason. Instead, Jimmy saw fit to torment the audience with longer versions of "White Summer". Though even without ALS, Berlin is still the longest show of the '80 tour (longest versions of "Trampled Under Foot", Stairway" and non-medley "Whole Lotta Love" performed by the group). Now that I think about it, I think Vienna is the second longest (even though the show was stopped due to someone lobbing a firecracker at Page during "White Summer"), so go figure!

Too bad, 'cos the 1980 versions of ALS aren't that bad, arguably one of the highlights of any given show. I prefer them to the coked-up speed metal versions in '77...

As for the fade out you mention, I believe most if not all the '80 boots end the first disc with SIBLY. I have both SBD and AUD tapes of Berlin and there is no discernible cut in the audience tape- they just ignored ALS that night...which might explain, when Jimmy is explaining his tuning issues during WS, his reference to the 'back room boys' not being ready for the tune. "Ray Thomas from Scotland" was probably expecting ALS after SIBLY but the band kiboshed it.

Well spotted re Vienna, Nutrocker....I don't have that one, but I'd already checked two listings & both said they played it on all the 80 shows, but then I just found another that didn't list it, as you say.

Phew! Now I can go get some sleep! It would've been just too bizarre if Bonzo's last stand had been the one gig where they didn't play Achilles...

Fuck, that's awesome (vinyl is my musical medium of choice!). Is that LP the audience or soundboard, if you remember? That'd be a nice one to have these days, and probably worth a pretty penny too...

Yes, Achilles Last Stand was played, it's on the audience recording vinyl, but not the soundboard that came out later. I had that same vinyl, I don't have the vinyl anymore, but remember it was on there. and remember it was not on the soundboard CD that I later aquired.
