reswati
No, they were named after a black demon-ish shape at the end of one of the member's beds. The black shape incident happened while they were recording their fifth album. Their name was already Black Sabbath long long before that happened. As I said earlier, read Ozzy's bio before you come up with stories that are partly made up by your vivid imagination.

the chase
The black shape incident happened while they were recording their fifth album. Their name was already Black Sabbath long long before that happened. As I said earlier, read Ozzy's bio before you come up with stories that are partly made up by your vivid imagination. The song Black Sabbath had to do with the vision Geezer Butler saw at the foot of his bed. He says Ozzy Osbourne gave him this old creepy book and that night Geezer saw the shape and the next morning the book was gone.. This story really had nothing to do with the song title Black Sabbath. The name was inspred by the Boris Karloff movie which was playing at the theater across the street from where the band was rehearsing. Like you said, they also saw something.. a Ghost when they were recording Sabbath Bloody Sabbath in a castle. but even still why would that make you not like the band? Ady
I don't no why post got deleted. I was nothing to do with that argument, so here it is again. No, they were named after a black demon-ish shape at the end of one of the member's beds. That gave them the inspiration for the song "Black Sabbath". Geezer Butler got the name from the movie. The black shape incident happened while they were recording their fifth album. Their name was already Black Sabbath long long before that happened. You're thinking of a separate incident. It supposedly happened while they were still called Earth.
Ross62
The Black Sabbath story began in Birmingham, England, where Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward were looking to escape a life of factory work through music. The four musicians got their start in such psychedelic outfits as the Rare Breed and Mythology (although Osbourne had been a short-haired Mod who loved soul music). Influenced by the reigning British blues bands - Led Zeppelin, Cream, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers - the four of them formed Earth Blues Company (shortened to Earth), in 1968. Everything changed when Butler came to the band with an idea for a song inspired by a disturbing apparition. A fan of horror films and the black magic-themed novels of Dennis Wheatley, he flirted briefly with the black arts. But when he saw what he believed to be a figure from the dark side at the foot of his bed one night, he ceased his dabblings in the goth world. With lyrics by Osbourne, the group composed a song about the visitation, entitling it “Black Sabbath” (after the 1963 Boris Karloff film). It provoked a reaction in audiences unlike anything else in their repertoire, and they knew they’d stumbled onto something powerful and unique. Forced to change their name because there was already another band named Earth, they made an obvious choice: Black Sabbath. http://www.blacksabb...om/history.html
fishhead
There was a recent Robert Plant interview posted on another thread where he kinda dissed Sabbath. I'm not really a fan of the Sabs but you gotta give them a thumbs up for some great tunes. Songs that are held dearly in the hearts of Black Sabbath fans. It kinda pisses me off when I hear musicians cutting up other musicians so I am not cutting Mr. Plant any slack here. i think he was off-side. There's room for everyone.....P.S.- a couple of years ago i was on a golf trip down in the Tampa Bay area. While down there we went to see OZZY, with Slash opening....great time! reswati
The whole "satanic music" label is quite easily given to a band as Sabbath, especially by people who never listened to what they sing. Yes, Black Sabbath mentions Satan in many songs, but always picturing him as a sign of evil and to be feared, not in a friendly light. The song "After Forever" even PROMOTES belief in Christ Lyrics: Have you ever thought about your soul - can it be saved? Or perhaps you think that when you're dead you just stay in your grave Is God just a thought within your head or is He a part of you? Is Christ just a name that you read in a book when you were in school? When you think about death do you lose your breath Or do you keep your cool? Would you like to see the Pope on the end of a rope Do you think he's a fool? Well I have seen the truth, yes I've seen the light And I've changed my ways And I'll be prepared when you're lonely and scared At the end of our days [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsfreak.com/b/black+sabbath/after+forever_20019384.html ] Could it be you're afraid of what your friends might say If they knew you believe in God above? They should realize before they criticize That God is the only way to love Is your mind so small that you have to fall In with the pack wherever they run Will you still sneer when death is near And say they may as well worship the sun? I think it was true it was people like you that crucified Christ I think it is sad the opinion you had was the only one voiced Will you be so sure when your day is near, say you don't believe? You had the chance but you turned it down, now you can't retrieve Perhaps you'll think before you say that God is dead and gone Open your eyes, just realize that he's the one The only one who can save you now from all this sin and hate Or will you still jeer at all you hear? Yes! I think it's too late.

the chase
funny little bit of trivia Scott the Engineer, The sad sack, Bowling fanatic from the Howard Stern show, recently said that he had a band when he was a kid and it was called Black Sabbath. Ross62
http://youtu.be/7iSsVskUcfo Cindy and Bert. Gusenberger and Berger started singing together in 1965, and were married in 1967. They signed a recording contract in 1969, with singles being regularly issued, notably "Der Hund von Baskerville", an unlikely cover version of Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" which has become a collector's curiosity. Their most successful period came between 1972 and 1975 when they placed eight singles on the German chart, including their biggest hit "Immer wieder Sonntags" which reached #3.
