Now that it's officially Fall, tell us about your Summer trips or vacations. Go anywhere special ? Anything crazy occur ? (like a tornado  )

Did the economy effect your plans ?

I just got back from the Memphis/Mississippi area. I had a great time, but it was 97 - 100 degrees every frickin' day. When I left Michigan it was 52. I brought sweatshirts ! Partied on Beale St.....Did Sun Studios and Stax. Ate bar-b-que up the ass. Never saw cotton in the Fall....what a cool site ! We went down some rural side roads where the entire shoulder of the road was coated in loose cotton balls. All of Mississippi smells like fresh linen durng picking time. My whole life I've taken vacations in the Summer. You get a different perspective on places when you go a different time of year.

There is no such thing as a "vacation" in my family. You need money for that. We're a tad more concerned about making sure bills are paid and food is in the pantry.

Summer Vacation?? Haven't had one of those since I got out of school. Will probably get to have one whenever retirement comes around.

But I know there are those that have them. Sounds like you had a good time Bong Man.

I had quite a few years when vacations were not possible. This year I was fortunate enough to escape the Midwest heat and go to San Francisco. Saw the usual sights and some unusual ones including some naked protesters for gay marriage and a crazy guy on the bus to Haight Ashbury who was ranting and raving and pulled out a switchblade. The WInterland Ballroom and Fillmore West are no more, so the only LZ related place I saw was Kezar.

I squandered my summer vacation holding the hand of a Jamaican woman who was fighting for her life in a hospital after drinking so much vodka for so many years that her liver declared war on her. As soon as she got out, she vanished into thin air.

We had a "staycation" this summer. We're due for a week at the beach this coming summer, but that will depend on $$ (oldest daughter graduates from HS this year and will be going off to college).

It would be wonderful to do one last family week at the OBX before she goes off to school.

Now that the cottage has been sold by my mother, I will see the 1000 Islands at my daughters wedding this August. But what I really want is some advice. Has anyone here ever gone to Cape Cod? I want to book a hotel in Chatham for five nights. Maybe in Sept? Advise wanted. One motel had a bad review by a former guest and it was actually funny. The owner kept re posting to defend himself. A rude foregner he was referred to by the customer that will never return. His advice "find another hotel". Ha.

I've never been to Cape Cod. If I were planning to visit, I would keep an eye on the hurricanes, and plan fishing trips very carefully if I were venturing far into the ocean. It's best to sail near a safe harbor, avoid the Grand Banks and the fate the Andrea Gail encountered in 1991. You might check the bed and breakfast inns.

Here is a link for the chamber of commerce.

That's too bad. The economy is really hurting a lot of people right now. Maybe you could take your kids camping? In many areas campsites only go for about then dollars a day. I love camping and fishing and always have more fun on those kinds of trips than spending a bunch of money at some fancy hotel anyway.

They hubby and I are planning to do some camping. We have to forgo a trip up north with our car club because of the expenses (hotel and gas) so some local camping trips are in the works. We already went out once and had a great time.

Not sure what I'm doing yet. I was thinkiing of Upper New York...a stop at Woodstock, Baseball Hall of Fame, maybe Adirondack for a spell. Never been in that part of the country except to drive through to other places. One thing I don't worry about is gas prices. Once its over $4 bucks, hotels are seriously effected, and start discounting like a mofo. My days of sleeping on the ground are pretty much over.

The baseball Hall of fame you will probably like but after you see it just get out of dodge. The adirondacks are beautiful. Many nice lakes, like Tupper Lake, Saranac. The Finger Lakes region is where I am and there is alot there. Wine tours, and if you want to hit a race track and casino all in one Finger Lakes is fifteen minutes from my house. ha. Arent you happy I resurrected your thread? Anyway, if you go to upsate NY, have a plan. Being a Detroit fan, you won catch the Red Wings or Lions in Buffalo this time of year so Niagra Falls would be the place to stop in the Western region. You could then drive east on the 90 (NY State Thruway) and then go past Rochester and Syracuse if you intend to hit the Adirondacks. The 1000 Islands are a beautiful place to go also. I would highly recommned it. Actually if you are a fisherman that would be the ticket. If you do not fish, you can swim at many places in the Islands, I recommend Kring Point state park just a mile or two east of Alexandria Bay the best town to hit in the 1000 Islands. Do not waste your time going to Lake George in the Adirondacks unless you plan to to to Saratoga. Otherwise, Other Lakes will be less of a tourist trap and more peacefull. I would say Rochester is far better than Syracuse if you planned to stop in one? But if you take the 90 East you can get to 81 North that will take you to the 1000 Islands and to the Canadien border. If you chose the adirondacks, you will be better to go towards Albany and then head north. Many many options of Lakes going as far north as Lake Champlain which I have not been to since I was 13. In the Southern Tier you have Letchworth state park which is nice. When it comes to upstate NY, I am the guy to talk to.

Well thank-you Sir....I'll keep that in mind. Been to the Hall of Fame, but my traveling lady hasn't. I figured she would like the area around Cooperstown.
