Wow, that's quite a list. I'm going to try and checkout all those you listed. Right now I'm listening to 5/21/77 Houston.

Thread on this already:

But to reiterate here is what I like most and why:

TSRTS Original - best version of the first variation of live of No Quarter and one of Pages best solos.

02-12-1975 - First live one I heard and Ive heard plenty better since but this one is just very tight, especially guitar and its still the best sounding boot ive ever heard

03-05-1975 - Piano/Drum jam out of piano solo is about the most moving music Ive ever heard, gets me going in ways words cant describe, never thought Id say I like piano solo more than guitar solo

03-27-1975 - Same reason as Dallas but this section is even better/longer and Pages solo is extra interesting.

Of the earls courts I actually like 05-18 the most while 05-24 is probably overall the best especially for vocals and maybe piano but I felt Pages solo in this version is not as interesting as other versions. 05-25 the piano and guitar are both equally loud during whats supposed to be Pages solo (they usually turn piano down) and this annoyed the crap out of me. I find that 05-18 is just a perfect tight < 20 min version, it has all the elements I most like and very solid at that

I admit I have not studied 1977 versions as much as 1975, but its mostly the band jam in the middle/end of the piano solo that varies in 77 versions and I don't know the differences in those all too much. Well I do on paper, I know some include this nutrocker thing, others a blues jam and others...???

04-28-1977 (Or any other solid one with the nutrocker)

05-26/28-1977 (not sure which i like more or if these should even be considered outstanding I just know people said to check this one out)

06-23-1977 (the blues/lounge jam in the middle of the piano solo is so good and Page does more interesting things with the solo in this version than probably any other). Overall the best but this (or any 77 version I think) does not include the piano/drum jam I most like in the later 75 versions.

Luis Rey's book calls the 6/23/77 performance "undoubtedly the best-ever version of No Quarter".

Probably my favorite version too. Although, the one on the 21st is quite good too. This can keep being debated as it has a lot to do with personal preference.

This is a bit of a tangent, but I was just listening to the 6/23/77 version-fantastic, in my top 5 for sure.

Anyway, I realized one of the cool aspects of the '77 versions is how they repeat the "Dogs of doom" verse a few times in the outro.

My feelings exactly-I love 6/23/77 and many other '77 versions but they are missing those great piano/drum sections!

Who can tell me when the first live performance of this song was???? the first one i have in my boot collectioon is on 09.09.1971

No you don't. Check again. You're either misreading the titles or you've been bamboozled by a shady bootlegger.

The NO Quarter from the May 18th show at Earls Court has a very beautiful improv. Jimmy's playing is very sympathetic to what Jonesy played during his piano solo which is not always the case. It's a completely new variation on the usual theme and I would love to be able to hear this in a better quality recording.

The first performance of No Quarter was Tampa May 5, 1973. You got a mislabeled bootleg, the only hard copy bootleg I have is also mislabeled, says Out On The Tiles London January 9, 1970 (but is actually LA Forum September 4, 1970). Silly bootleggers lol.

Favorite No Quarter,

1) Vancouver 3/19/1975

2) Vancouver 3/20/1975

3) LA 6/23/1977

That's been it for quite some time now, but I'm sure it will change sooner or later.

I see others answered your question (correctly) in another thread, I skipped Atlanta May 4, 1973. Please excuse me.

He is probably talking about the original rough take that was included with the Headly Grange rehearsals.

Best ever hands down, not only that the neck slides and the feedback howl work perfectly unlike many other versions.

The earlier 1973 ones are cool too since they are closer to the Album version, than the later versions.

1975: 3/21/75 Seattle, then in no order: 3/12/75, 3/17/75, 3/27/75

1977: 6/21/77 La, then in no order: 5/30/77 & 6/27/77 (everyone loves 6/23/77 but the middle jam doesn't take me anywhere like the others and that's how I rate them

because of the incredible middle jams. On 6/23 they seem to keep slowing it down and almost stopping while the other shows they keep the momentum going and going

and the jams flow until they go back into the conclusion part with vocals. I have wanted to like it but...).

But nothing beats 3/21/75 and 6/21/77. The interaction between the three in the middle jams can't be beat at those two shows.

Not that Led Zeppelin needs to be raised any higer on their pedestal, but Nutrocker compiled a disc of the "boogie" section of "No Quarter" from the 1977 tour a couple years back. (Hope you're ok with me refreshing minds, Nutrocker)

This disc further cements the illimitible talent of the band, certainly John Paul Jones. It's a veritable feast on improvisation. I guess whatever mood Jonesy was in a particular night?
