Jahfin
Do you like the movie Dazed and Confused? You know, the one about growing up in the 70s. Yes. Since I actually grew up in that time period I found a lot to relate to in that movie but there were some things I couldn't relate to at all such as the bullying and violence. I guess some folks had that going on in their high schools to some degree (Seniors vs. Juniors and vice-versa) but it was nothing like that at mine. Misfit
Yes. I guess some folks had that going on in their high schools to some degree (Seniors vs. Juniors and vice-versa) but it was nothing like that at mine. I didn't go to school in the 70s and i never saw that kind of violence or hazing at my high school. So i asked someone i knew who graduated in the 70s and had seen this movie and they said they could relate to a lot of stuff in this movie but not the hazing. They said they never saw that at school either. It makes me wonder just what kind of schools did this happen in.
FieryOceans
There was violence at my high school, but it usually involved students from other high schools coming over sometimes as small gangs. It was always racial. The sorority focus in Dazed and Confused was overblown. I never saw any of that in my high school, none of the girls I knew were into it nor the boys in any sort of fraternities. And I went to high school in Texas during the time that Richard Linklater made that movie about!
SuperDave
The hazing aspect of the movie isn't that prevalent at high schools. That's mostly on college campuses regarding sororities and fraternities. But I love this movie. One of my favorites. But the whole hazing bit, I guess makes it more entertaining snd a better movie I suppose. I'm sure that's why Linklater included this stuff in the film. gina62
I love this movie also. I grew up in modesto ca, where the movie American Graffiti was about. D.C was alot like my h.s. days, but without the hazing. I do remember the taunting to some students ,but it was just to scare them.It was fun times I will never forget !! The Pagemeister
It is a great movie, one that you can watch over and over. A lot of actors were unknown at the time, then eventually became famous. Also interesting is that Dazed and Confused came out 17 years after the year it took place in '76. And the movie now is 17 years old.
JimmyGun
Wow, i love this movie, but the hebrew translation for the title is soooooo bad. its "youth trip" as if from drugs or getting high...great movie though
Texas Melanie
I loved this movie!! I wasn't old enough in the '70's to have been in high school but my sisters were and the movie is pretty darn accurate. The clothes, the hair, the music and the attitude was spot on. I do remember boys making paddles in shop class when I was in high school in the '80's. The one line that reminds me of Jimmy Page: "That's what I love about these high school girls, man. I get older, they stay the same age."
Strider
I started high school in 1976, so this movie was right in my wheelhouse. They pretty much nailed it to a T, even given the cultural difference between Southern California and small-town Texas. Every character in the film reminded me of someone I knew in school. They even got the girl's bodies right...no over-aerobicized, no-hips, boob job aspiring porn stars that seem to populate so many teen comedies of the last 10-15 years. Regarding the hazing, maybe it didn't happen where you went to school, but this wasn't meant to be a universal paean to high school in the 70's, but a very time-and-location specific personal memoir of Richard Linklater's experiences in a small town in Texas, 1976. Having spent time in Texas, I can totally believe hazing took place in high schools there.
Anjin-san
Hi all, As I posted in the FTaRH thread, after viewing this movie with a younger friend and his comment("Was it really like that?"),it was,....even up here in NE. It does capture HS in the mid-70's. et me tell you what Melba Toast is packin' right here, all right. We got 4:11 Positrac outback, 750 double pumper, Edelbrock intake, bored over 30, 11 to 1 pop-up pistons, turbo-jet 390 horsepower. We're talkin' some fuckin' muscle. I may play ball next fall, but I will never sign that. Now me and my loser friends are gonna head out to buy Aerosmith tickets. Top priority of the summer. I was getting there! I had my hand under her shirt! Hear that, he was 'getting there'. Son, you wouldn't even know what to do if you got there. I didn't think drugs and alchohol were such a big deal they had to resort to Neo-McCarthyism to get rid of it. I think they're just worried that some of us are having too good a time. "Check you later." KB
Black_Dog_90
I like Dazed And Confused a lot. Good film. I was wondering myself if the film is accurate but I've read and heard it is very accurate, which is great. We've never had anything like that in high school, especially back in the 70s, except drinking, occasionaly smoking weed and few other things but music was always there. Everything in the film is great, the music, clothes, atmoshphere, etc and many cool and interesting characters. I always enjoy watching it. I haven't seen the film but hazing was prevalent where I grew up - in almost every type of school and/or social context - and that nauseated me, so from teens-onward anything I belonged to was just honorary. Besides, I always had to work to do so there really wasn't much free time for social activities.
