If you get a chance one of these days post the standing on here? How many divisions are there and how many games in a season? See, now its me asking the questions about your type of "football". Soccer as we call it.

We have four professional divisions, they use to be called division 1 since 1888 (top), 2, 3 and 4, makes sense, then they formed the Premier League in 1993, that now is the top division, now the 1st div (called "Championship" now) is the 2nd tier of footy, Division 2 and 3 are now known as League 1 and league 2.

There are 20 teams in the top division (The premier league), they play each other twice, home and away, so thats 40 games a season, 3 points for a win and 1 point for a draw.

Since the inception of The Premeir league started, Manchester United have won the title 11 times, Arsenal 3 times, Chelsea 3 times and Blackburn Rovers once.

WE also have THE F.A Cup, which is a competition opened to all football clubs either professional or non league, Amateur etc to take part in, its probably the most famous cup compeitition in the world. The Final is aways played in may.

This is hte league table as it stands today.......

Thanks much. So it looks like Man United is in first? I dont quite understand the numbers. I see the wins, ties and losses but is the first number the number of games played? Looks like Chelsea are right up there too? I used to watch a bit but no longer can find it. It is probably on one of the thousand channels i have on Direct TV Dish? So who is your favorite team? Which team would be London's team?

Do your teams have nicknames? for instance the city of Dallas are the cowboys. Buffalo are the Bills. Pittsburgh the steelers. etc?

Oh yes. Arsenal (my team) are the Gunners or Gooners

Chelsea - The Blues

Fulham - The Cottagers

Tottenham Hotspur - Spurs

West Ham - The Hammers

I think I am going to be a Chelsea fan. ha. But I like the sound of the cottagers too. Manchester United as far as I know are your version of the New York Yankees. The big team with the money.

Manchester City are the team with the most money, followed by Chelsea. I posted a chart on this thread of the teams who have spent the most money in recent years.

I've gotta go, football is on now! :) West Ham Vs Birmingham in the second leg of the Carling Cup Semi-Final.

Liverpool are also playing Fulham tonight.

Manchester United's nickname is "The Red Devils"

I would have to watch some games before I chose a favorite. I do not like big greedy corporate monsters like the Yankees and I have to think Manchester United, be it all they are famous, are the bad guys. So I would cheer for someone else. I love the game during the World Cup. We have a city here in Rochester that has always been considered a good soccer town. The Rochester Lancers used to be here and Pele played in that league against us. The Lancers won a couple of titles back in the seventies. When they built a new staduim in downtown Rochester two years ago we were pretty much expecting to be in the MLS. It never happened and we are still in the other league, that is actually way bigger in number of teams, but I am disgusted and felt like I was lied to. I will not buy a ticket to see them. The Rhinos they are now called. They had some very good teams and beat the Chicago Fire even and I was there at that game a few years back. But if they dont join the MLS, I will not go. And it does not look good. They have already lost their affiliation with the Buffalo Sabres in hockey (Rochester I mean). Buffalo draws 18,000 pr game and the AHL Rochester team cant get 3000 a night. In the old days when they were affiliated with Buffalo they drew 10,000 no problem. Not bad for a minor league team. But back to soccer. I am a fan of the World Cup first. Its a great spectacle and the African event was tremendous. I know the English league is the best in the world. Players come from all over to play there, probably also due to the financial rewards. I would like to see soccer become bigger here in the States and at the same time, our football and hockey become bigger over there. You have had some of our games played there. NFL and NHL which is hockey. Give it a chance and I gaurantee you will love it. Leddy, do you understand the rules in the game? What a first down is and all? If you have any questions post them or pm me and Id be glad to let you know. I may have some in soccer. Even though I know the game quite well because we have had our pro teams here. I played as a teenager in a leage. And I got to play one day with some Lancers. One was an english player by the name of Charlie Mitchell. Ring any bells? I was center forward and scored a goal. Ha. The clueless goalie was deaf dumb and blind I think. ha.

Perhaps I am wrong in my view on this? But as far as I know they are the most recognizable team in the league outside of England. Probably the only team most americans have even heard of if they are not soccer fans. Go Chelsea!!:D

Just because they are the most famous<_< , Chelsea and Man City have more money and also while Cjhelsea were hoovering up all the top players, Manchester United won 3 titles on the trot, Manchster United have built a history up over the last 100 years whether the Manchaster United haters like it or not , there is a tradition built up by being one of the first teams to pioneer the European Cup with the Busby Babes untill that fateful day to being the first team from England to win the European Cup.

I supported then for 19 years before we won a title, I didn't care it was about supporting your team, the fct they have marketed themselves well around the world is a bonus, although we are unhappy being owned by and American now <_<.

You can support Chelsea (someone needs too) :)

Not your fault lol,

Its F.A Cup 4th round this weekend

Its all Greek to me Leddy as they say. No comprende. I dont understand your leagues. But I do have one thing over the Brits. I understand your game, the rules and all. Not many Brits can say the same about american football. The one rule in soccer that I always thought they should change is the offsides. I dont mean totally change it. just when its close and a player is even or straddling and attacking player, ie if you drew a line across the field and it would hit both players, let it go. Give the benefit of the close ones to the offense to open the game up more. It would create more scoring and bring in more fans, at least in the United States, and it would make defense, and midfielders work harder.

Its all greek to you because you call the game by a different title...its not soccer as you call it pmsl, never kind of worked that out, as for bringing in more goals, with respect it would start being a joke if we were getting scores in double figures and the offside, its a good rule and I think it works well as it is now.

As for knowing rules of your sports well thats true, as only watching one of your sports once a year (the superbowl as you know),

As your here could you tell me why American football is called that when the majority of the play is with you holding or throwing the ball ?? its again something that I cannot seem to understand, its more like the world sport of rugby, ball is even the same shape as rugby.

Have a great day mate.

Leddy, you do have to kick the ball off. You have to kick it to punt. You have to kick it for the extra point. You have to kick it for a three point field goal. So you do have to kick the blasted ball. Its far more complicated than soccer. ha. And for Gods sake man, people here are not looking for scores in double digits. But they are sick of 0-0 and 1-0. The majority of soccer games played outside the English premier league usually end that way. and my guess is there is more scoring in the English league becuase of all that Guinness they are drinking at halftime in the locker room. ha. They couldnt stop a beach ball from going in the net. Make sure you watch this one Leddy. It should be a very good game.
