Pictures From JP's Book To Go On Display

Recommended Posts

I have underlined the text to which I want to draw your attention. I wonder if Jimmy will be turning up in person to this display? If so, there's a chance for our London based members to hang around and see the great man in person.

Jimmy Page by Jimmy Page', a limited edition photographic autobiography from the Led Zeppelin guitarist, has sold out despite not being officially released yet.

The book – which cost £495 – is 512 pages long and features over 650 images of Page from throughout his career.

Selling out through pre-orders, the hefty book from Genesis Publications, is bound in leather and wrapped in silk and was compiled by Page himself, who also wrote the text.

A selection of pictures from the book, taken by photographers such as Kate Simon, Neal Preston, Ross Halfin and Pennie Smith will be on display on November 5-6 at Elms Lester Painting Rooms in Covent Garden, London.

Elms Lesters Painting Rooms are housed in an extraordinary space, purpose built as a painting studio in 1904. Since 1984 the gallery has been specialising in contemporary artists who began their careers working on the street. The building still serves its original purpose as there's not only an exhibition space here but artists rooms and facilities for artists to work in residence. These affiliated artists often produce site specific work which is displayed in the gallery. Close to theatre land, the scenic painting studios have been used to create masterpieces for theatre backdrops for more than a hundred years.

Damn it, I can't get down to London! I see it's over two days, so I can't see Jimmy hanging around for all that time. He might make a surprise appearance during the exhibition though. I have the book coming so I can see the photos them, but I still feel like I'm missing out.

Anyway, thank you Kenog for posting yet more interesting information! :D

Jimmy Page Public Exhibit, Fri 5 & Sat 6 Nov

On November 5th and 6th Genesis Publications will host an exhibit of images from their book and selections from their archive at Elms Lester Painting Rooms, London.

JIMMY PAGE BY JIMMY PAGE has become the fastest selling book in the history of Genesis Publications, having sold-out through pre-orders alone. The book, which documents the iconic guitarist's life from his childhood in music through his legendary career with Led Zeppelin to the present day, was personally compiled by Page and features 650 images, many from his personal archive. Jimmy also wrote the accompanying text and helped design the magnificently luxurious binding to create an artefact that is an incredible visual documentary which reflects his vast contribution to music.

Genesis Publications will host an exhibition of images from the book plus selected books from 35 years publishing, at London's Elms Lester Painting Rooms on November 5th and 6th, 11am-6pm.

The exhibition is open to the public who will be able to see a collection of works by more than 70 different photographers including such legendary names as Kate Simon, Neal Preston, Ross Halfin and Pennie Smith.

As the book has sold out before its official launch, this will be the only chance to see these exclusive images outside of the limited edition publication.

For more information, visit Elms Lester Painting Rooms.

Thanks for the PM Kenog, if i can get there I will, parking is such a problem in that area, i know from my work as a courier that the Lizard men with their little book of tickets roam the streets until very late with the expectation of eating human flash, or getting your hard earned cash, I'll let you know if I go and I will post something for your delight.

Regards, Danny

You are welcome Danny. I put the details of the private function on another thread. Remember that it takes place on the evening of Thursday 4th, with the general viewing on the 5th and 6th. The Traffic Taliban are all over the place! You could maybe get a photo of Halfin with his fake tan and dyed hair:D. Perhaps Jimmy might spot Misses Big Dan, fall in love at first sight and run away with her :run:

BTW, your boy has done us all proud with his military service, and he is a good looking lad too.

Thanks Kenog,

If I get up a petition with say 1000 signatures do you think they will let me in? or maybe a note from Sam saying I'm the forums representative or something? or maybe some other scroat will get that honour. :o

Jimmy (or Robert for that matter) would have no chance with Misses BIGDAN, as she likes devoted one woman type men. and she has asked me if I know any on the forum for her to inspect. Ally? Kev? Beatbo? waddayousay?

Regards, Danny

PS, My Boy hey? ain't he just? ;)

This is from Elms Lesters website

JIMMY PAGE by JIMMY PAGE

5 - 6 November 2010

11am - 6pm

Elms Lesters is proud to host Genesis Publication's book launch and accompanying photographic exhibition JIMMY PAGE by JIMMY PAGE.

The limited edition book is Jimmy Page's first official published work and the definitive photographic autobiography of one of the world’s most iconic guitar players. As well as signing every copy of the 2,500 edition, Page has personally chosen every one of the 650 photographs, written the accompanying captions and helped design the magnificently luxurious binding.

After two years of sifting through thousands of photographs to produce a final and definitive edit that includes a mixture of iconic portraits, rare and unseen images and photographs from Page’s own archive, the photographs represent the most significant moments in his career: from a schoolboy with a rock-a-billy quiff through his extensive work as a session musician; from The Yardbirds through Led Zeppelin, ARMS, The Firm, Outrider, Coverdale & Page and Page & Plant; playing with The Black Crowes, Roy Harper, P Diddy and performing with Leona Lewis at the closing ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The exhibition will represent the work of more than 70 different photographers including some of the greatest names in rock photography – including Ross Halfin, Neal Preston, Kate Simon, Gered Mankowitz, Dominique Tarlé, and Pennie Smith.

Gallery opening hours on Friday 5th and Saturday 6th November will be from 11.00 - 6.00pm

Admission Free

i'll definitely head there on both the 4th and the 5th. doubt you'll see much on the 4th but you never know. another one of those led to my chance encounter with JPJ so fingers crossed.

Austrian-zeppelin,

I have put a post on the 'Private Function For JP's book' thread which gives details from previous gallery visitors on finding the place. If you do attend on the 4th and/or the 5th would you please share with us here any photos/exhibition details. Thanks.

I will have a quick look around on the 5th, if you know Denmark street it is quite easy to find, there is alley between a job centre & church it is there.

It is not a large gallery, so I do not think it will have a comprehensive collection of pictures on display

As for parking unless you use NCP I would not chance it

just popped over to the Elms Lesters Gallery during the lunch break. yesterday's private party seemed to have been a who's who in rock (ronnie woods, luke morley etc were in attendance). The gallery is small but i reckon there are around 30-40 pages from the book on display, and all those who have ordered one, you are in for a treat. Also on display was the entire back catalogue from Genesis and there are some absolute gems for xmas lists in the not so distant future, especially the Storm Thorgerson box is mindblowing.

Jimmy's book was on display as well of course and seeing it in the flash explains a lot why there are shipping delays (and speaking to the guys there only 800-900 will reach its recipients before xmas). The book is just stunning, the printing of the photos is as good as i have seen (and having a brother who is a photographer i have seen a lot), the anecdotes next to the picture are intriguing and full of insight, and the quality of the binding etc is a true piece of artisan mastery.

Whoever claimed that this cost only € 20 to manufacture needs to get their ass down there today or tomorrow and he will eat his words...

Having seen it now in the flash, i fully appreciate the work that goes into this, and i honestly don't care how long i have to wait, as I know when it arrives I own a real piece of art...

In terms of freebies there obviously wasn't anything apart from the genesis catalogue and a flyer promoting the exhibition...

Here are some shots from the gallery and the flyer.

So what's your verdict on the book? I've already heard one member describe it as 'stunning'. Please says it as wonderful, fantastic or any other superlatives you can think of! :D

yes it's a photo book , but then again the spice girls are top selling artists......the book is an artwork and will give the lucky 2500 people who will own it hours of pleasure reading/ it looking at it.

for a long time people considered the halfin book a masterpiece, compared to jimmy's book it's a mere cheap collage of photos.

it's worth every penny spend on it, every second waiting for it. If Led Zeppelin were a book, this one is Earls Court 75, Europe 73 etc...

Went along today, the selection of pictures on display span Jimmy's career and include passport stamps & pictures (he has green eyes!).

A lot of the early pictures I had not seen before of some of the bands he was in.

The book is there, it has a thick ( not perspex not glass, not really sure what it was ?) and is really well bound, very good quality.

Jimmy has added comments to some of the pictures, but not really in great detail. The photographs in the book are well presented and the live shots are

quite stunning, well done to all the photographers who contributed, of the photos that I have never seen these tend to be very candid Jimmy and Sphinx .

If you are in London try to visit well worth it , the gallery is playing Led Zeppelin songs as well.

If you have bought the book, remember to tip the postman it is heavy.....

If you visit watch the step down or end up flying into a Jimmy Page banner like me.

Edited by Cecil.

I went to the exhibition today, and though I hate to be a wet blanket, it didn't make me regret my decision not to order the book. Physically it's nicely produced, but no more than you would expect for £400. Some striking pictures, but also a lot that are very familiar - I'd guess at least a third were pictures I've seen before. And only a few of the pictures have any text from Jimmy, none of which is very illuminating.
