My mom loves that song because it mentions Kankakee, IL. She was born and raised there. I've never heard his version though, I've always been familiar with Arlo Guthrie's.

Arlo's cover of it has definitely received more airplay. I guess it's one of those cases where the original version isn't as well known even though Steve Goodman has always been well regarded as a songwriter. He also wrote "You Never Even Call Me By My Name" (with John Prine, who refused a songwriting credit at the time) even though most people associate it David Allan Coe.
