I guess it's one of those cases where the original version isn't as well known even though Steve Goodman has always been well regarded as a songwriter. He also wrote "You Never Even Call Me By My Name" (with John Prine, who refused a songwriting credit at the time) even though most people associate it David Allan Coe.
