VH1's Most Shocking Moments in Rock N Roll

Recommended Posts

So my parents and I were watching tv last night and we tuned in for the top 5 most shocking moments. VH1 revised the list now, making Michael Jackon's death number one rather than John Lennon's. Now I love MJ and was very upset when he died (I cried and all) but I do not think his death was more shocking than John's. I mean, I was shocked when I first heard about MJ's death but let's be real, the guy was pretty messed up so him dying the way he did wasn't absolutely unfathomable. I wasn't around when John was killed but even I think his death was more shocking. He was murdered so senselessly and violently, I don't think anyone was expecting that to happen at all. The list in general was pretty messed up though (Britney Spears shaving her head was #6, wtf?). But anyway my question is, do you agree that MJ's death was more shocking than John Lennon's?

I wouldn't read so much into it, that's just the media's way of sensationalizing things. I could give a rat's ass about MJ but his death definitely caught me by surprise. So much so that I figured it might be a prank of Andy Kaufman size proportions. I was also shocked by John Lennon's death but for completely different reasons. To even compare the two is an exercise in futility, something the media is particularly keen at.

Not really no. Someone with a history of drug abuse and drug problems dying from a drug-related heart attack is not as shocking as someone being gunned down in front of their wife, in front of their apartment building. Was it an unexpected death? Yes. I don't think anyone thought Jackson would die the same day Farrah Fawcett did, but considering the myriad of health and substance abuse issues he had, it was a matter of when, not if. There was no way to even guess that something like what happened to Lennon would happen.

I think people were just as shocked by his random death like Lennon's. I think Lennon's was a more shocking way to die. It tore people apart. So in a sense, they were both shocking in their own separate ways.

I think Lennon's death was legitimately shocking, whereas the shock value of MJ's death was simply a corollary to his popularity / fame.

In other words, it's always surprising when someone famous dies, and the more famous, the more surprising.

But it's much more shocking and unexpected when it comes at the hands of someone else, as opposed to being the result of a person's own actions or lifestyle (drugs, alcohol, etc.), or physical condition (afflicted with disease).

Based on reports and rumors, a person could easily have guessed that MJ might die of an overdose at some time.

Not so with the random act of violence against Lennon.

I am a fan of MJ. However, I think it is really ridiculous to classify MJ's death as more shocking than John Lennon's! It is rather laughable really!

I have also made up my mind not to watch that show, when it airs here in New Zealand because classifying the event of Britney "Looney" Spears shaving her head as a "shocking" moment in rock n' roll is just plain silly. We all know that the woman is a nutter and personally, I think she needs help! I honestly started laughing when I read that the whole "shaving off her hair" incident was actually classified as shocking! :P

What's next? A feature on Paris Hilton? :hysterical:

IMHO, the cold-blooded murder of John Lennon is still the most shocking moment in rock history.

I also agree with you and Kiwi. I watched a documentary about it recently with an interview with the Dr that treated John in the ER, and it was very, very sad and moving.
