Matjaz1 Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 It's the way Jimmy produced it obviously! A lot fo songs have less punch studio then live! Call it a 'commercial' trick, but I think the songs are still damn powerfull! I also think the studio Rock and roll solo is a little to quiet! Quote

Becaude in the studio (IMHO) he was looking for a different sound. As a producer, all the Zeppelin albums sounded different even each song within one lp. Technically, for the rhythm guitar I believe he was playing a Les Paul through a small amp (maybe the Supro) with a wah-wah pedal on with the tone off (pedal back instead of down). A Wah-Wah pedal allows the guitar tone go from dull to bright by rocking the pedal with your foot. (Listen to the begininning of Voodoo Child ...Slight Return) The lead guitar sounds like a Les Paul through the Supro amp turned up loud with distortion. You have the contrasting sounds of the duller rhythm guitar with the bright cutting lead. The most brilliant producing work Jimmy did was the solo to Stairway to Heaven. Many people thought that he was using a Les Paul but was actually using the Telecaster. It was all about microphone placement. Quote

It’s just different amps, mic placings, and all different things. Also, if you just crank it up to the distortion point so you can sustain notes, it’s bound to sound like a Les Paul. I was using the Supro amp for the first album and still do. The single coil telecaster compared to a Les Paul humbucker sound quite different. (Even outside of the hum cancelling properties a humbucker (two single coils put together)) Pickup a Fender Telecaster- plug into a Marshall and turn it all the way up: I swear it can break glass! There is a lot of warmth to the lead and a much less biting sound that a telecaster produces. That is where Jimmy's brilliance as a producer comes into the picture. Quote
