What's the first live concert you attended?

Recommended Posts

I'm sure there's already been a thread on this topic, but I couldn't find it, so I apologise if I'm repeating a thread.

What's the first live concert that you attended? How old were you and what are your memories?

My first live concert was Page and Plant on 13th July 1995 at the Sheffield Arena. I was 16 at the time. I went with my older brother, we were both live concert virgins! :D Page and Plant did a lot of the music from No Quarter, and as an encore they did Whole Lotta of Love and the Wanton Song in traditional Zep' style. I was expecting it to be loud, but the level of the volume took me a bit my surprise but in a good way. It was a truly amazing evening and one I'll never forget.

Since I'm 17 I don't have lots of concert experience, but my first big concert was Iris (4 years ago or so), one of Romania's biggest rock bands. They've been around for more than 30 years I think and they are heavily influenced by Whitesnake, AC/DC, Thin Lizzy etc.

They had a successful collaboration with Uriah Heep:

Gee we are looking at 1973, 7 years old and it was "The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra" at the Winter Gardens, that was my first live musical experince.

First gig other than classical gigs was "Kim Wilde" Winter Gardens Bournemouth 1982... :bagoverhead: .. it was alot of fun though, down the front with the youth club, I even took the microphone off her as she lent down, and the panic in her eyes a she got it back. Went around backstage with one of my mates, got a poster signed, got a kiss, I was in love for two weeks then got back to my senses and got back into being a man and liking ACDC, Zeppelin etc lol.

First Zeppelin related gig........Robert Plant at Bristol Colston Hall (Dec 4th I think) 1983," Principle of Moments Tour". $ rows from the front and it was magical seeing him live for the first time, even had John Paul Jones come on for the encores :)

First Rock Festival was "Knebworth 1985 - Deep Purple".......damm wet the night before in the camp site, wet on the day, cold, but Purple blew me away that night........made "Mudworth" as its now known as worth it :)

Sorry got three gigs in there for the price of one for your first live concert lol, but it all makes sense, have all or most of my tickets over the years still.

Which can be seen below

If this counts as a concert, It was at the Louisiana State Fair I was 3 and we saw Conway Twitty. He picked me up and kissed me on the cheek and my Mom beamed for days!! :-)

And this was my first on my own- 11 years old with some friends.

How ironic is this? I'm pretty sure it was the June 3rd 1977 Led Zeppelin Tampa Stadium event. I never think of that as my first show....but yeah, 15 years old with a group of girlfriends unsupervised. :)

The Eagles and Elton John were at the stadium around that time period as well, but I'm pretty sure it was Zep. Of course the Zeppelin show was

a rained out event after 3 songs......so maybe I shouldn't count it? Which my next pick would be the Eagles? It's a great question. It's strange

because I remember all the concerts pretty well, but the dates are harder! I think that's probably because back then everybody was so happy and high. :D

Ahh, the stuff we did as kids, embarassing now...............missy

Deborah,

Hi. Yes, I believe you should count the fairgrounds! I don't know much about Conway Twitty, --but recognize the name. Sometimes the

fairgrounds will put on great shows. I saw Stevie Wonder in his prime circa 1985, Tampa Fairgrounds. Excellent show. :)

How good were The Who? :) .....missy

I have to go back and look up some of the dates. I will occassionally forget a concert as well until a friend or my sister reminds me. :bagoverhead: As you stated remembering things can get a little fuzzy from back then :yesnod:

They were amazing! Setlist was great! The warehouse was not a huge venue and it was next to the tracks, but oh the memories of some of the concerts there.

Black Sabbath 14th November 1975 at Manchester Free Trade Hall. I was deaf for about 3 days after but loved it. The Sabotage album. Sabbath were my heroes before Zeppelin, then years later when i was despatch rider in London, i went up to Ozzy's house when he lived in Little Chalfont, Buckinghamshire. I was awestruck. Ozzy says, "that's a big bike innit mate" in his Brummy accent, it was only a 500cc effort. I went there a few times as Sharon had openned an account with the firm i was with. Met the kids before i met Ozzy.

Thats a great first gig and great to see you have the ticket still, thats cool :)

August, 1972 - ELP at Convention Hall in Asbury Park, NJ. I was 16. I bought three tickets. Sat somewhere near the back of the venue. I lived about 1 1/2 hours away. The guy who was supposed to drive, backed out a day or two before the show. My father ended up driving me and another friend to the show. My sister came along for the ride and walked the boardwalk with my dad during the show. I sold the extra ticket.

My second show at Convention Hall was around April 2005 for Springsteen and the Seger Sessions band rehersal show. The place is so small. I would guess it seats less than 2000 people.

My first concert was seeing the Edgar Winter Group with Rick Derringer at St. John Arena on the Ohio State campus, May 13, 1974. I had forgotten that The James Gang was the warm up band. How could I forget that? The James Gang was a band from Cleveland and Joe Walsh lived in Columbus with his family at one time. But I remember that Joe Walsh had left the band before 1974, so the group that I saw was not the original line-up. That's why they weren't too memorable for me. I was in high school and it was the first time that I was on The Ohio State University campus. I went with my brother, his friend and my high school friend. We got lost driving around campus.

I got to see Edgar and Rick Derringer play with Ringo Starr's All-Stars this past summer. What a fun concert! It brought back the memories of my first ever rock concert. I went with my youngest son, and he thought that they were awesome. I don't think that I ever could have imagined back in 1974 that someday I would be seeing Edgar and Rick playing the same songs in 2010 and that I would be at the concert with my 20 year old son! It was a great moment.

Gee you saw The James gang when the late great Tommy Bolin was in the group, he then went on to join Deep Purple in late 1975 for one album before he died...wow he was such a great player in The James gang when you saw em :)

It is funny that I don't really remember them at that concert, and I have a very good memory. It could be because we got lost and maybe were late for the concert? I will have to ask my brother if he remembers the James Gang.

The first concert I ever went to was Robert Plant, on his first solo tour, at MSG on 9/12/83. The tickets went on sale in July & I happened to be home when they announced on the radio that they would be going on sale at 1PM (only 10 min. from then). Since there was no internet at the time, you had to buy them at the Garden or a Ticketron, which happened to be in a Record World store about 20 min. away- I jumped in the car & -ahem- "broke many traffic laws" to get there (yeah it was stupid, but hey, this is Robert Plant!). I ran into the store, out of breath, and barely could get out the words "2 tickets for Robert Plant please". (The people in the store were laughing).

Finally the big day comes, my best friend & I took the train into NYC, bought our concert shirts (I still have mine!) & took our seats (loge level opposite side of arena from stage). We were talking to the people in front of us before the show, and when Robert finally came out they were nice to let us look at him with their binoculars. He was wearing a blue/gray jumpsuit, with a blue scarf around his neck, he had on 2 belts with 1 of the belts had a scarf attached to it & was wearing white sneakers. I had brought a pen & paper with me & I wrote down all or most of the set list (not sure if it's in order):

In The Mood

Pledge Pin

Messing With The Mekon

Worse Than Detroit

Moonlight In Samosa

Fat Lip

Thru With The 2 Step

Other Arms

Horizontal Departure

Wreckless Love

(intro of band members)

Slow Dancer

Just Like I've Never Been Gone

Big Log

Burning Down One Side

Little Sister

Stranger Here ...Then Over There

Great show!

First concert for me was California Jam I at the Ontario Motor Speedway April 6 1974. I was 16 and went with my boyfriend, his brother and 2 of my girlfriends.

The bands that played that day were Rare Earth, Earth Wind and Fire, Eagles, Black Oak Arkansas, Seals and Croft, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

We got there early in the morning and parked the car on the side of the road across the freeway from the speedway. Cars were everywhere as there were well over200,00 people in attendance that day. We found a fairly good spot to stake out,

I remember all the bands except The Eagles. I figure I must have taken the hike and hour wait to use the outhouses there. Really enjoyed Sabbath and Deep Purple. Emerson Lake and Palmer were awsome. Keith playing the levitating, twirling grand piano is one of the best memories I take away from that day. ABC taped that concert for the In Concert series they use to show so there are several youtube videos to help me remember the day.

The first concert I went to was Peter Frampton in Salina, IL in 1978 (I think) I was a Sophmore in High School. A bunch of my friends drove from a little town about 40 miles from Salina to go to the concert. Back then they were all general admission and I remember we stood on the floor the entire show. Can't remember who the opening group was. I still have the ticket stub somewhere. I have all my ticket stubs from after high school/college years till current but can't seem to locate the ones I went to while in high school. It was alot of fun. Memory is fuzzy on the show since it has been 33 years ago (OMG! ) First of many shows I saw in Salina and Wichita, KS in my younger days! I still listen to Peter Frampton to this day! Still love the double live album from 1976.

I posted this before somewhere on another thread quite some time ago.

I had seen many local bands but my first full blown rock concert was:

Led Zeppelin Sydney Showground

February 27 1972 2.00pm

It was a balmy summer's Sunday afternoon, rain clouds had threatened all morning but thankfully never eventuated.

My good mate Muzza and I jumped on the train and headed into the city.

We arrived at Central Station and walked the couple of miles to The Sydney Showground, more accustomed to holding Rodeos and such rather than rock concerts.

Thousands of people had gathered estimated at somewhere between 26 and 38 thousand.

They threw the gates open about 15 minutes before it started.

The stage was set back about 50 yards from the boundary fence, the stands were full except for a handful of VIP's sitting on the grassed area.

Several fans tried to join them but were tackled by the cops and escorted back to the stands.

The band ripped into the Immigrant Song and pandemonium broke out when we charged on to the field and the cops didn't know what had hit them and gave up the chase.

As fast as it started it ended with everybody just stopped and sat down all at once for a few seconds then started going off.

After a couple of songs Robert said "Hello Sydney, I hope it doesn't rain and we have to stop, if we don't we'll all blow up!" and the throng erupted.

We were about 10 yards from them centre stage

One of the many highlights was when they played Bron-yr-aur Stomp and the whole crowd clapped along with the chorus in perfect time, a real "you had to be there moment".

I left there with a feeling that I was part of something special that day and it only seems like yesterday, even though it will be 39 years ago next month that The Mighty Led Zeppelin landed in Oz.

Set List

1. Immigrant Song

2. Heartbreaker

3. Black Dog

4. Celebration Day

5. Since I've Been Loving You

6. Stairway to Heaven

7. Going to California

8. That's the Way

9. Tangerine

10. Bron-Y-Aur Stomp

11. Dazed and Confused

12. What Is and What Should Never Be

13. Moby Dick

14. Rock and Roll

15. Whole Lotta Love (inc. Boogie Chillun - Hello Mary Lou - The Rover - Let's Have A Party - Lawdy Miss Clawdy - Going Down Slow - The Shape I'm In)

16. Communication Breakdown

17. Organ Solo / Thank You

I have this DVD-Audio and I'll be cranking it up as I usually do every year on the anniversary of the concert.

I guess figured everyone knew who Peter Frampton is. He is an excellent guitar player and more than just a pop/teen idol star they made him out to be in the mid 70's. I was a fan of his when he was in Humble Pie.

His long hair is gone but the man can still jam!

Two of my favorites of his:

and doing Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun:
