Egypt is about to dump Mubarak

You know what they say ....The grass is always greener and be careful what you wish for. This reminds me of a few other historical uprisings by the young never satisfied youth.

Remember 1979? That was when the young Iranians wanted that American loving Shah of Iran booted. How'd that work out? Now, many kids of those '79 protesters hate the very regime their parents fought to put in charge. (as a bounus we now have an Iran close to being a Nuke power )

Oh, how about in the year 1998 (or about there), the Taliban went into Afhghanistan and set up shop to overthrow the corrupt government and shut those poppy fields down. TIME magazine was singing their praises back then. Of course now we know they took all women out of schools, banned ALL music, and allowed terrorist training camps.

The news today said the young Egyptians are unhappy about the 9.5 unemployment rate and hyper-inflation. Welcome to the Global Community. No freedom? They had internet access, tweet, as far as I know they can travel ----unlike say the people of Cuba. And what about the fact that Egypt (and Mubarak) is one of the few Middle East countries to recognize Israel's right to exist? Not to mention they have been a U.S. ally for years.

I don't know about the human rights violations there.** Maybe someone could update me. I read years ago Mubarak doesn't take sh*t from anyone. He made a parking lot (literally) of a small town that was suspected of harboring terrorists. I can't recall the collateral damage, but the terrorists didn't ever go back to Egypt. But now....who knows with the region being so unstable.

So to reiterate, I'm sorry the young folks can't find work, but be careful what you wish for. Flying the banner of freedom tends to get a very emotional response from people. That doesn't mean the protesters have the same agenda you and I do, or that the end result wil be anything resembling true freedom.

**Speaking of Human Right Abuses,--what about the record of China? We know what that government will do if you speak up there. And the internet, oh please. Remember the Tiananmen Square Massacre. :( Guess China is just too darn important economically to the world for the world to send in back-up to those poor protesters.

I hope I don't ruffle any feathers speaking up, this is all just how I see it at this moment in time. I may very well change my mind with new information...........missy

Finally ....some UNbiased and down-to-earth talk here....thank you missy:):):). THIS is called debating....somEthing that many other posters here have TOTALLY and UNCONDITIONALLY forgotten. Of course, flying the banner of freedom is a two-way thing....very dangerous in the hands of wrong factions.....but if any state thinks that the only way to stop freedom from emerging is to black-out the media with openly aggressive means or even (like many Western countries do) via apparently "democratic" means, they are MISTAKEN 100%!!

Sure, the Iranians kicked their "king" and things aren't rosy there, BUT they are handling it...they do not need the "Westren super-hero morons" to change things:):)....nukes? What nukes? The govt has to feed the people, nukes my asss!!:)

Once I visited the Domenican REp against the will of many of my mates who said thay had heard of shops shelves empty and mothers breast-feeding in the dumps.....well, I went and didn't see any of that...sure poverty...but thenSAME poverty we can see and touch (but will NOT accept:):)) in our own "rich" countries:)!

It's best to see things with an open mind and NOT be brainwashed by the media....I mean the corrupt TV and radio media...best to get info from the Net sources like rock'n'roll man here who started the thread......PONDER PEOPLE PONDER...WHILE YOU ARE STILL IN TIME :):):)

spidersandsnakes,

I totally agree with you that it's a very unwise, (stupid actually) move for Mubarak to get heavy handed and try to shut off communication, etc. That horse has already left the barn.

There may be things I don't know about Mubarak. I'm just concerned with what/who may replace him.

The old "better the devil you know" adage. .............:) missy

P.S. It's very easy for me to judge from afar. As tough as things are in the U.S. now, I'm not living in an oppressive police state.

In reality, methinx Armageddon commenced when over 6000000 Jews were brutally slain under RIGHT-WING Fascist regimes:):)

Fascism is anything but right wing. Maybe in Europe they can be seen as right wing. To me Fascism is just an other form of big government socialism. The government can do better for it's people. That's really what fascism is all about. They just added racism to it. All fascism really is when you look at it is another form of socialism. In America it's seen as a far left ideology. Because America decided a long time ago to give it's power to the people and be a self government.

The Egypt thing is happening because of the price of everything is doubling and tripling and so the poor people in the country can't afford anything. This tends to happen in Socialistic type countries, but you know what will happen a new regime will take over and they will change it a little at first then years from now it'll be the same situation and we'll have another protest. There's very few times in history where the people actually know exactly what they want from their government. America is lucky to have things like people that are basically communist like Bernie Sanders in our government. And people on the complete other end like Ron Paul that are self government types like Madison and Jefferson were 250 years ago. Not many other countries really understand this concept. Just like you don't understand the concept.

Momentous day for the Middle East

Friday was a momentous day in and for the Middle East and I won't wrote at length because my part in it was insignificant and the situation is too fluid and there are too many uncertainties for me to draw too many conclusions. Mubarak surprised me with his obstinacy. When I saw some 10,000 people stream across Kasr el-Nil bridge into Tahrir Square at sunset, after a one-hour battle with riot police which made the western edge of the bridge a living hell of tear gas and rubber bullets I felt that the end had come and the revolution had triumphed. But that was premature. I had the same feeling when I ran across publisher and democrat Hesham Kassem in Kasr el-Aini Street about 10 o'clock in the evening. Hesham was ecstatic -- he has been waiting for this moment for years and was as surprised as we we all were. At the time a police truck was burning outside the parliament building up the road and thousands of youngsters were preparing for a final push towards the building (they didn't make it in the end despite four hours of trying).

I concur with Issandr that the spirit of solidarity and camaraderie was extraordinary. People shared everything -- water, cigarettes, onions (for tear gas) and information. Largely there was also an amazing discipline and restraint. Whenever violence against public property looked imminent or people were about to throw rocks, others would chant 'silmiya, silmiya' (peaceful, peaceful) or 'No to violence'. I know there has been some looting here and there but in some eight hours on the street yesterday I saw none, despite ample opportunities. The bravery of those who have been on the frontlines has also been extraordinary and I hope they one day they receive the credit they are due. The youngsters really are a very diverse crowd but yesterday evening, on a street corner in the eery halflight, I overheard a well-informed debate between a group of some seven or eight over who should replace Mubarak. Two of them favoured Mohamed ElBaradei as a transitional leader, but the others were less sympathetic. The most assertive man in the crowd said ElBaradei was part of the establishment and the country needed 'new blood'.

Nope....methinx that some people tend to "detour" the meaning of Fascism depending on what they want it to mean....the POLITICAL SPECTRUM (a word that has become disused in time!!) is NOT an opinion but a FACT....and the facts are that Fascism and Nazism are located on the FAR RIGHT of the spectrum and rascist ideals are ROOTED in that philosophy..since FOREVER. I think too many people have been BRAINWASHED by the media (TV and radio) into thinking and SCARIER still, believing that Fascism is left-wing....who are they trying to fool?? NOT ME:):):)

Sure self govt. ....that's why I think Americans should review their WONDERFUL American REvolution and underrate iit less:):):)

Nick, now this is what I have issues with, When the People only have the Right to Elect a Candidate that is put up and paid for by the Social Elite then the People have no Power or Self Government, its a Fallacy , a Dream, No a Nightmare, that You the People of America have become accustomed to and now accept as Fact, step out of the Shadow you are under and see your Country for what it really is, A Dictatorship with Multiple Dictators.

No that's not really how the US has worked. I think with Obama and Bush we basically had the same 2 type of leaders. I really don't see a big difference between those two outside of one being white and one being black. But both lack any real backbone to really go after the real problems in America which are entitlement spending and Military spending at the federal level. But neither one of those 2 have much real power about how laws are enforced in states. Which is completely different from dictators. And the government in America has always been most inefficient went it tries to get that power. Look at the 1930s and the Great Depression for a perfect example of this.

The ONLY maniacs I know are RIGHT-WING and their names are BUSH, BERLUSCONI, MUBARAK, etc. ......"NEXT TIME THE FIRE....", HEHEHEHEH :)

Saddam Hussein(butcher of thousands of his own people),the current leader of Iran(you know the one,I can't remember his name but he wants to wipe Israel off the face of the earth),Bin Laden(September 11th,does it ring any bells?).All muslim, all maniacs and you can bet that their Eygtian equivilants are just bideing their time to see how things pan out in Cairo.Sure it's a great thing when people run their own country,it's when they have a hand or give support to those that want to blow up mine that I get a bit touchy. The Egyptians say that they want freedom, human rights and the end of foriegn interference in their country's affairs, all that I'd probably agree with, but what they and the world will probably get,in my opinion and I want to be wrong on this,is a government of islamic fundamentalists full of the type of maniacs who want the world to go back a couple of hundred years to the time of their bloody prophet.Personally,I do not fancy that.

Don't forget the 'great' UN when they skedaddled from Rwanda to let the mass muderers do their 'work'.

Not defending anyone, simply pointing out that history has shown what happens after a pro-Western head of state is overthrown.

All those disenfranchised mobs in the streets of Cairo are getting their fifteen minutes of fame but they will never get real power.

So someone is still defending the OBNOXIOUS RIGHT-WING govts. in their HOPELESS venture of putting down THe PEOPLE, heh?! I REALLY hope that Mubarak, the Saudi Arabian kings and sheiks and RIGHT-WING Afghan govt. get what they deserve...the PEOPLE have knocked DOWN another "Wall", it's just that most people can't relate to this and accept it....until the Wall comes tumbling down...and history repeats itself!!:):)

Oh, I quote "Won't get fooled again" when speaking out against the OBNOXIOUS right-wing defenders and states, hahahah :):)

Ummm...

He reiterates that he is NOT defending a particular position in the current situation, merely pointing out the results of historically-similar events.

Yet you quote him and accuse that he is "still defending the OBNOXIOUS RIGHT-WING govts., etc.).

Am I missing something here?

Not to mention the fact that (as misstootsweet pointed out) most of those takeovers resulted in regimes that would happily extinguish ANOTHER 6 million jews (roughly the current Jewish population of Israel) in the blink of an eye - or the push of a button, to be more precise.

Rather confusing and outright conflicting/incongruous combination of ideals you support/exhort.

/just sayin'.

All Western countries should look inside their own states for the REAL REVOLTING RIGHT-WING MANIACS (starting from the mother of all battles, The sickening CRUSADES, for instance!!:)......oohhooo, know we're afraid of a few Muslims taking over "our" cozy little REVOLTING world, hahahhahahahahha....LET'S COME OFF IT!!!!:):):)

Fear of anarchy and looting lingers in Egypt

By the CNN Wire Staff

January 30, 2011

Cairo, Egypt (CNN) -- Fear of anarchy and looting lingered in Egypt on Sunday, with many streets in the nation's capital left without security after police stopped patrolling."It seems that every major square and every small street in Cairo was basically taken over by communities ... people are parading the streets, walking around with baseball bats and knives," said Ahmed Rehab of the Council on American Islamic Relations from Cairo. "We didn't get any sleep all night." State-run Nile TV reported that the military issued a stern warning to the people on Saturday: "Stop the looting, chaos and the things that hurt Egypt. Protect the nation, protect Egypt, protect yourselves."

Still, shops and businesses were looted and abandoned police stations stripped clean of their arsenals.

The aging president has ruled Egypt with an iron fist for three decades, and it was widely believed he was grooming his son, Gamal, as his successor -- a plan now complicated by demands for democracy.

"I understand these legitimate demands of the people and I truly understand the depth of their worries and burdens, and I will not part from them ever and I will work for them every day," he said. "But regardless of what problems we face, this does not justify violence or lawlessness."

You are so correct, all the troubles of the muslim world are down to the evil west and in particular the great Satan itself, the U.S.A.Most of your answers seem to display the loathing of your own culture that is the classic left wing mindset.
