Ludwig_Paiste
Seems Bonzo did not play a drum solo at Knebworth. Or in the few shows of the 80's. To me a Led Zeppelin concert is incomplete without John soloing on Moby Dick or Out On The Tiles. Silver Rider
Here's an interview from 1980. I had to laugh about these remarks by a fan. Please God......bring back john bonham,...and we will let you have justin bieber.!!
Nutrocker
A thirty minute drum solo didn't exactly fit Page's 1980 "Cut the waffle" philosophy (no long solos, etc). The last one Bonzo played was in Seattle in 1977...I think he just got tired of them, or the band collectively decided it was an effective way to chop half an hour off of the three and a half hour marathon gigs they were playing; none of the three remaining '77 gigs after Seattle featured the drum solo. And with that final solo in Seattle, it's as though Bonham knew it would be the final drum solo; he busts out all sorts of "Pat's Delight" licks he hadn't played since '69; it's way different from the other '77 solos. I think he conciously decided to bring the whole drum solo thing to a gestalt that night. Too bad...I love the drum solos, but then, I love drums period (though I'm more of a guitar/bass player)...Bonham and his sound and playing were what got me into Zeppelin in the first place. To me a Led Zeppelin concert is incomplete without John soloing on Moby Dick or Out On The Tiles. There was a sort of short drum passage prior to InThe Evening at Knebworth. I was at the first show and i think whilst you were in a field all day having been tortured by the worst line up one could imagine ( except for Todd), a drum solo would have been just a little too much. Also there are shows from the UK in 72 where he didn't play a solo. I think Newcastle is one that springs to mind?

JPJ = the groovinator
JohnnyBGoode, watch the WLL from Knebworth so you can be up to speed with us. As for Bonzo's drum solos, you will notice that Led Zeppelin only performed the drum solo tunes at the bigger tours/countries. They never played Moby Dick in Japan, Australia, and a lot of smaller U.K. countries.

The only show they did not play it at was Melbourne. There are no none boots of the Perth show so who knows if they played it there. I bet they did. Moby Dick was also played at Tokyo, Hiroshima, and Osaka in 1971 but in 1972 it was only played in Osaka. I wish they went back to using the Pat's Delight theme for the drum solos.

ledzepfilm
Bonzo did the Timpani solo in 1979 - 1980? That counts as a solo eh?
Flyingzepp
No, we are talking about drums solos at shows, so it fits here. Actually, this is common knowledge among the zeppelin community, so yes should be in the newbie thread. Just sayin'
JimmyPageZoSo56
Bonzo did the Timpani solo in 1979 - 1980? That counts as a solo eh? I'm going to say no because the timpanis were played in the beginning (studio and live) "In the Evening."
ledzeppelinguitardotcom
The music scene had changed by this time period (late seventies)... punk was the new thing and the days of the bloated rock star were numbered. Jimmy Page tried to stay hip to what was going on with the punk scene and tried to connect with young fans (e.g cutting out all the excessive solos)
Gospel Zone
The audience looked bored with the long solos in 1977.

From what I have heard, they go longer or stayed about the same length.

Jimmy Page tried to stay hip to what was going on with the punk scene and tried to connect with young fans (e.g cutting out all the excessive solos) Right ! Even John used only one timpani during the tour 1980.But I think that this did not work perfectly.Apart from everything else LZ is not real punk. So Jimmy has left highlights (drumsolo) and alot of glamour (dragon clothes) but did not get the reaction he wanted (I saw 3 concerts of the tour). I doubt that he would not have changed that again if they would have toured the US lateron. So he used the Nazi clothes during the first gigs of the 1977 tour. Probably to provoke.Than he changed his clothes very soon....
zafreth
I think that the drum solo thing was not fittable of the "new" Led Zep, and besides, in mick Wall's book, they said that in the 77 tour, many people use the drum solo of Bonzo to go to buy sodas, take a piss or lunch. Other than that, he wore his white dragon suit, his white suit, and occasionally the black dragon suit. DavidZoso
Here it is, in my opinion not as good as the Royal Albert Hall 1970 and the Earls Court (25th) 1975 solo: Those youtube video clips are the last drum solo Bonzo ever played. Seattle 7-17-77 was the first show of the 3rd leg of the 1977 US tour-the next show was Tempe 7-20-77 and Bonzo did not play a drum solo at that show or the last two in Oakland 7 23 & 24 1977. jsj
bonham didnt play a solo at knebworth and look at the amount of songs they played that night instead. in my opinion knebworth was one of their best set lists of the later period. i struggle with the 77 tour because of all the excessive solos. take out moby dick, jimmys guitar "solo", whittle down white summer/ black mountain side, and a chunk of no quarter and we've saved an hour where they could have played 5 or 6 songs in their place. the 77 and knebworth shows were roughly the same length yet very different in approach i know that kind of excess was the favour of the time, but page & plant both claim to have got the punk/new wave thing and the excitement and immediacy of it, yet after going to see the new bands down the roxy, they then went out and played their most indulgent shows ever on the 77 tour. i like moby dick in the earlier years and i'm not against it, i'm just not for it later on
