Walesdad
The G word is not one that I normally use,we all know that it is thrown around in every direction today, but I have to make an exception right here and now.Does anyone else think that Lou Reed is a songwriting genius? And I mean, genius.I don't know a lot of his solo stuff, but some of his songs for the Velvet Underground were stunning, and I've got a theory that if he had really wanted to,he could have had hit single after hit single.Tracks like,"I'll Be Your Mirror","Pale Blue Eyes","Sunday Morning" and "I'm Sticking With You" are just beautiful songs and the flipside to compositions like,"White Light,White Heat","Heroin","Murder Mystery" and "Sister Ray".For me,the man deserves more recognition.Any views? Strider
You'll get no argument from me. As I've previously said, two of the major musical moments in my life was hearing Led Zeppelin and the Velvet Underground for the first time. Those bands both remain among my favourites, and there's a good chance that if a current band is influenced by either one, then I will give them a listen and more often than not like them; ie. Television, the Stooges, Jane's Addiction, Soundgarden, Sonic Youth, Stereolab, My Bloody Valentine, R.E.M., Autolux, No Age, White Stripes. One of my pet projects I'm working on for the board is a sort of buyer's guide to the Velvet Underground. Jahfin
For me,the man deserves more recognition.Any views? I think Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground have received plenty of recognition over the years. However, some folks don't really have an appreciation for anything considered underground, alternative, etc. so you'll probably never get through to them. That's all well and good though because we can't all be expected to like the exact same things. It sort of reminds me of the fellow here who insists that Queen are under appreciated when in reality that isn't the case at all. Sometimes I think when someone is such a huge fan of a band (or artist) they aren't able to see the forest for the trees. That's not a condemnation, just an observation. For instance, I'm sure there's some out there that believe Led Zeppelin have never received their due despite the tribute records, platinum albums, sold out tours, constant play on Classic Rock radio, the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame induction, the amount of books written, etc., etc.

Yes he is. What he did with VU still resonates to this very day, not to mention his solo career that has had more creative peaks than I can count. Reed might not have always been an easy listen but the man is a flat out genius.
The Pagemeister
Lou Reed’s final photograph According to manager Tom Sarig, the photograph was shot a couple of weeks ago when Reed did a photo session intended for an ad for Parrot, his friend Henri Seydoux's French headphone company. "The renowned photographer Jean-Baptiste Mondino took the shots, and this was the very last shot he took," reads the caption. "Always a tower of strength." Lou Reed died on Sunday. A doctor has confirmed that the cause was liver disease. http://music.cbc.ca/#/genres/Rock/blogs/2013/10/Lou-Reeds-final-photograph
