BATON ROUGE -- Travis Morace has been running boats on the Mississippi for two decades, witnessing all of the mighty river's many moods. He's seen it calm and smooth as a newly paved road and endured jarring rides filled with treacherous twists and bumps.

But even experienced river pilots have never seen anything like the roiling current now racing to the Gulf of Mexico.

As long as the water level stays below 20 feet and there is no breach in the levees, the flooding will be limited to low-lying outer banks along the river. They opened the spillway (pronounced Bonnie Cahrie) today to re-direct the floodwaters away from New Orleans.

I noticed a home with a high levee around its perimeter staying dry.

Bonnet Carre Spillway, just up river from New Orleans. Opened May 6th to prevent river flooding of New Orleans. The spillway redirects a portion of the Mississippi river flow into Lake Pontratrain. This video was taking on May 21st 2011 after all 350 bays were opened.
