JIMMY PAGE ON THIS DAY (Archive)

On this day… 26 Aug 1994

I finished filming Unledded for London Weekend Television

This day marks the final day of recording of the Page and Plant Unledded 'No Quarter' project for MTV at LWT, located by the river Thames in London. Two days before, we had the final rehearsal and incorporated the Egyptian ensemble of strings and percussion who would be flying over the pad of a classical orchestra. Amongst other elements that were incorporated, we showcased Nigel Eaton on Hurdy Gurdy to play on 'Gallows Pole' and Najma Aktar who sang on 'The Battle of Evermore'. The rehearsal was the first time we would get to hear the two orchestras play together, as up to this point, the Egyptians and the traditional orchestra would have rehearsed in separate locations. With string arranger Ed Shermer on keyboards, Michael Lee on drums, Charlie Jones on bass and guest guitarist Porl Thompson, we were ready to make musical mischief! The recordings were from two performances - one from yesterday and one from today. Along with the field recordings in various locations in Morocco and Wales like the magickal children of Alan Lomax, Page and Plant were soon to be ready for a world tour to present new musical textures to a world audience!

I had to purchase an import cd single from the show in order to get an audio version of The Rain Song (Jimmy on the Martin acoustic) which was on the B side. At the time of the airing of the show, that track was not included.

I still find it hilarious that Page and Plant agreed to be on MTV's Unplugged show and then turned it on it's head. The premise of the show was to strip the songs down to a simple and acoustic version of itself. Page/Plant added musicians and made the songs more complex. It was cool at the time and seriously, how do you tell Jimmy Page to play Zeppelin tunes without his amplified Gibson and live with yourself.

The connection to MTV's "Unplugged" has been exaggerated by various reports. It's true that MTV originally approached Robert about making a solo appearance on "Unplugged", but by the time Jimmy came on board everyone knew that it would not be an unplugged performance. If you look at the credits for the original broadcast, the word "unplugged" is not mentioned anywhere (and MTV only got a tiny little mention at the very end of the credits).

It looks like Y/B played Aug. 27, 1966 consecutively at two venues: Earl Warrens Show Ground (attendacne 1,820) and Ventura High School Auditorium

Here are the source link, Refernce to Alan Clayson, The Yardbirds:

...these photos today are from Earl Warrens Show Ground, Jimmy Page Official Autobio. Page 44 (I think I posted some photos of this earlier)

.....very welcome, both Dreja and McCarty were super friendly at fan meet/greet invitation by The Yardbirds...

McCarty is very very (overly, from my observation) friendly & colorful personality, he was having super fun with young fans at photo poses at Winnipeg Casino (couple years ago, I met them),

Dreja was also very friendly, just little reserved and careful in thought when communicating...I asked couple of Yardbirds tour related mysteries questions, that's all

...and of course I let them know that it was an honor to meet them...truly!!!
