Come on now Ady. Its true. Gee, Is there some meaning behind the title "How the West Was Won"??

Perhaps I should've changed it to;

You would have to say the same for the Beatles, Stones, Pink Floyd, The Who, etc. We have the numbers. Its a big country. Success in England alone would have meant nothing to me.

Bands/Artists can and do have success without ever making it big in America.

For instance, The Jam

http://youtu.be/whSYTSXm8wo

Their most successful album in America (Sound Affects) only reached no.72 on the Billboard Charts. They were huge in the UK and left a lasting influence and legacy.

While the US music market is indeed a huge one to crack, I have to agree with Ady -- there are a ton of really talented artists out there who haven't had major success in the US, either because their music didn't mesh well here or because they never actively sought it out. Take Sigur Ros, for example. Huge, huge group.....but no so much here. Also, The Walker Brothers. They were HUGE in England, but only had one hit song over here "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore." Doesn't mean they weren't successful or that they weren't talented, just that they hit it big somewhere else.

Oh yeah, about The Jam - Adam Horovitz of the Beastie Boys said that growing up he wanted a black and white Rickenbacker like Paul Weller had, and that his style greatly influenced his own guitar playing. So there's a bit of that influence that Ady was talking about.

Damn dude. Have you never heard America the Beautiful? Have you been livin under a rock?

Well, I don't know, maybe I've heard it. I spent kindergarten and 1st grade at a US school, and every day at 3pm they made us stand up, salute the flag, and sign some goofy song.

Would that be this, or would it be that tune that Hendrix made famous?

The Pledge of Alliance.

Possibly, sang the National Anthem "The Star Spangled Banner"

Hendrix: American veteran, part native american,....once played the combined British&American national anthems and got booed.Either Monterey Pop or Hendrix in the West.

You probably had to recite the pledge of allegiance. So no it is not that either. It is a very famous patriotic song just like the Star Spangled Banner. Go to Google and listen to it. America the Beautiful. I am quite sure you have heard it if you did not spend the last two decades on Mars.

Another thing I love about you guys is the artistic license you seem to have when it comes to pronunciation - and I'm not back on my 'grammar Nazi' soapbox here btw, that's adequately taken care of elsewhere, as you will have noticed.

No, what I'm talking about here is how you reinvent the pronunciation of your names.

I've spotted quite a few amusing examples in the past, but the one that's tickled my fanny lately is that Boehner guy. I mean, I'm sorry, but how the hell does he get 'Barner' out of those letters?

At best, it should be 'Burner', which would be consistent with how they would pronounce it in Germany, from where the name presumably originates.

More commonly, and at worst (and here, I believe, lies the crux of the matter), the average person would probably look at it and say 'Boner'.

Good luck with your economy, btw. Just make sure you don't let your squabbling bring the rest of us down too, ok?

Our economy is being ruined by the tax and spend group. If I have to adjust my monthly budget, the congress should have to as well.

This nation was founded on a tax revolt (as you all over there are well aware). In my opinion, we are right back at the same anger over taxes as we had when we declared our independence. Now we just have to find a way to be independent from our own destructive fiscal policies.

Cheers,

Brad

Brad, just join back up with the English and we'll send in the Nave to Free you, oops, sorry Brad we dont have a Navy, only a mothballed one that is. :o;)

Kind Regards, Danny

PS, Psst, if you want to rejoin the Empire you'll have to take your quota of Tea, if thats alright? :whistling:

What, so you think you know God Save The Queen/King? I'll bet you only know the first verse. Five thousand bucks says you never heard this one:

Lord, grant that Marshal Wade,

May by thy mighty aid,

Victory bring.

May he sedition hush,

and like a torrent rush,

Rebellious Scots to crush,

God save the King.

It's about time they reintroduced that part, if you ask me.

Yes, I played your tune, and I remember it. Always reminded me of 'O Tannenbaum'. Now then, where's my Fritos?

All in good time my friend. All in good time!!

Whoever started these "Thank You" for (insert country here), I salute you. I realize that there has to be a "Thank You" for the the "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" topic here, however, I would Like to start a New One. (By the way, jahfin, do not post a reply that says there already is a topic here. That seems to get old. If you have a comment please, make a real comment).

I would like to Thank my own country for helping out all the other Nations of the World that has some kind of problem(s) that they cannot handle on their own. Be that political/socio/economic/natural or other.

This is only one reason why I love (My Country). How many other Countries/Nation/Governments/Citizens help out other Countries with Billions of Dollars in Aid and Manpower when something happens to "their" own country? I could go and name names, however, that seems to me to be a moot point.

Look what just happened in Oslo. I would bet that the Norwegian government will ask the United States of America's Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to look into and help out what and why and how this terrible could have occured.

Besides that, I could "Ramble On" about why I would like to Thank the USA.

To me, what is comes down to, is that I honestly do LOVE my Country and I would defend it to my Death. From any enemies, both foreign or domestic.

Back to the Real reason I started this topic: I LOVE the USA. I consider myself very fortunate to have been born in and raised in a highly civilized and advanced country that has been THE WORLD POWER for over 65+ years and will remain THE WORLD POWER FOR the rest of my life and future generations that follow.

Well, to fully understand why the US has been a world power and how it ATTAINED that power, you need to have a vast understanding of chronological world history and the history of US wars and economics. No offense, I say this because if you did have this knowledge, you would not be making the statement "for the rest of my life and future generations that follow". Those cards have been played again, we've folded. :)

Anyway,

I'm not going to get all nationalist, but one thing I do enjoy about the US is the fact that you can experience almost any place in the world in one country. Land and sea, It's a beautiful country. B)

Sadly, there's a lot of truth in what your saying however,no matter how bad things are at the moment, I still have faith in America's ability and if there's one country on this planet that can meet a problem head on and get it done, it's the good ol' USA. If this was a different era, I'd say park the Missouri in somebody's backyard but of course, that wouldn't be politically correct !

Good reply. I am not going to lie and say that I know the whole history of the great U.S.A. (because I do not). I will say that I am a very avid reader of History. History of all kinds. I am pretty knowledgeable about Nazi Germany too but I would never say that early 1930's - to early 1940's Germany was the greatest nation ever. Just look at who defeated and conquered the Nazis. The United States of America, Great Britian and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and lets not forget, to a lesser degree, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and so forth. Of all these countries, who is still the dominant World Power? Who does the rest of the World turn to and look to when there is a (world) crisis? Russia? France?

I realize that MY Country has done some things past and present that are despised and villified by other people of many nations. However, like I said, whenever their nation has some sort of predicament that it cannot solve or handle on its own, who do these people and their governments usually turn too? Russia? France?

No not Russia or France. The good old USA. And what crime have we ever commited that really deserves any type of outrage like they have thrown towards us in the middle east. They are all freaks. I have always questioned the decision to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but outside of that our record is very solid. Those stinking idiots in Afganistan need a bomb dropped on them.
