DavidZoso
This was the 4th and last night in the Windy City at the Chicago stadium. The previous nights show was canceled after about 65 mins because Jimmy Page was ill. So they came firing back with a great show. Over the years this show has been called the show where Jimmy Page wore a stormtrooper outfit. I totally disagree with this outfit being called that and in fact have done some research and have posted what a real stormtrooper outfit looks like. In my opinion Jimmy was trying to look like the World War 1 aircraft pilots that were on the cover of the Led Zeppelin 2 album. Definition of a Stormtrooper: Stormtroopers (in German Stoßtruppen, "shock troops") were specialist soldiers of the German Army in World War I. In the last years of the war, Stoßtruppen were trained to fight with "infiltration tactics", part of the Germans' new method of attack on enemy trenches. Men trained in these methods were known in Germany as Sturmmann (literally "assault man" but usually translated as Stormtrooper), formed into companies of Sturmtruppen ("assault troops", more often and less exactly Storm Troops). The infiltration tactics of the stormtroopers are still in use today, in one form or another. Other armies have also used the term "assault troops", "shock troops" or fireteams for specialist soldiers who perform the infiltration tasks of stormtroopers. Anyway below are some actual pics of what a real stormtrooper looked like. Everybody has their own opinion and I would love for us to debate on this. In the fourth edition of the Neal Preston- Led Zeppelin photo books-the one released in 2009, he is interviewed in the book and he says that out of all the photos taken of Jimmy Page all these years- Jimmy says the one's from the Chicago April 10, 1977 show are his favorite-period! Also in that interview with Neal Preston, Jimmy wore this outfit backstage and in between shows but only on stage at this one show. He only wore up until the beginning of Over the Top/Moby Dick. When he came back for the ending of Moby Dick he was wearing the white dragon jacket but just plain white pants. He would not wear the full white dragon pants until the first show in Cincinatti April 19, 1977. What I think Jimmy was shooting for- the World War 1 air pilots on the Zep 2 album cover. Actual pic of air pilots from World War 1 Zeppelin pilots from World War 1 What a real Stormtrooper from World War 1 looks like. ledzepfilm
So many photos! Thanks David! I thought the Stormtrooper outfit was said that Jimmy's pants were the ones identical to the Stormtrooper pants from SW under that armor. hot dog
In my opinion Jimmy was trying to look like the World War 1 aircraft pilots that were on the cover of the Led Zeppelin 2 album. The cap he is wearing is that of the Schutzstaffel (SS) and was introduced sometime in the 1930's.
Texas Melanie
I also think that Jimmy is wearing an outfit similar to that of a WWII officer. Or maybe he was emulating the uniforms of the officers working for the Dark Sith, Lord Vader. (Ok, I just had a moment of geekiness) Edited August 19, 2011 by MissMelanie

joey1985
those pictures of John Paul Jones don't look like ten years gone, his right foot his higher from the foot stand he used which means no bass pedals.
ledzepfilm
Those pictures of JPJ with the acoustic are the Battle of Evermore, he used the Triple Neck for TYG.
DavidZoso
Those pictures of JPJ with the acoustic are the Battle of Evermore, he used the Triple Neck for TYG. on this first leg of the 1977 tour he just had the 12 string acoustic- he didn't introduce the triple neck acoustic guitar until the beginning of the 2nd leg which started in Birmingham, Alabama May 18, 1977. those pictures of John Paul Jones don't look like ten years gone, his right foot his higher from the foot stand he used which means no bass pedals. That 2nd pic of JPJ with the 12 string acoustic is for sure Ten Years Gone as you can see Jimmy on the side of the pic with the brown telecaster and I do think the other 2 are also TYG because there is too much space there where Robert Plant would be sitting on the stool for the acoustic songs. joey1985
Why would he use a foot stand if he was using bass pedals? Also what picture are you talking about with john paul on acoustic with jimmy on the tele? I didn't see it.

joey1985
I don't think that is Jimmy or even a person, but if it is him with the tele then yes it is ten years gone. However, I'm talking about the pictures where John Paul is obviously using a foot stand, which he would not need during Ten years gone because he would be playing bass pedals. That is Jimmy - you can clearly see the baggy dark pants he is wearing and the other photos with just JPJ can only be Ten Years Gone or The Battle of Evermore- since I see no stool or Robert sitting next to JPJ I will still say it is Ten Years Gone. Just look at this pic of them playing -The Battle of Evermore and see how close Robert is sitting next to JPJ- he is not in those other pics. joey1985
How do you explain the foot stool? why would he have a foot stool with bass pedals, that is what I have been asking.
DavidZoso
How do you explain the foot stool? why would he have a foot stool with bass pedals, that is what I have been asking. I get where you are coming from-but I don't know what to tell you. This pic below if you look close it looks like the outline of the bass Pedals(the curved white outline by his left leg) and you can see what I am talking about in the second pic as you can see the outline I am referring to- the bass pedals are over there on the riser with the keyboards in the background. I also know what little foot stool you are talking about and it may be down there by the bass pedals. Here is the little foot stool you are talking about. Chicago
Jimmy Page wasn't the only band member to wear a hat at this show. I'm curious if any one has a photo of the hat Robert Plant wore that same night briefly during the acoustic set. It's not the white fedora Jimmy wore. tom kid
Haha that's awesome, fair representation of Jimmy during '77 I'd say.
Chicago
Page actually looked more pale and bone-thin at the April 10th show than he did the night before when he hit the deck. When he came out in the black t-shirt, the contrast made his arms look so thin it was shocking.
