Read the article here. The article also links to an interview with Scott McCaughey (the source of the Buck solo album news) who reveals plans for the release of a new Young Fresh Fellows album. In other Peter Buck news, he and his former R.E.M. bandmate Mike Mills will be performing in Austin this week during SXSW as part of the tribute to Big Star's Third/Sister Lovers album. In addition to that, they'll also be part of Alejandro Escovedo's backing band during his performance at the Continental Club which unofficially closes out SXSW on Sunday. More info on that here.

This is a status update from The Baseball Project page on FB. I can only guess they're alluding to Peter Buck's solo album.

Hard at work the last three days with BBP bassists extraordinaire Peter Buck and Mike Mills, making a Peter-led record in the BBP home haven of Type Foundry Studio in Portland with our main man Adam Selzer at the board. No baseball songs but with Lenny Kaye and Bill Rieflin in the band, and lots of friends dropping by, it is just the right kind of mayhem.

Earlier this evening REMHQ posted the studio version of Buck's "10 Million BC" which is of much higher quality than the one that's been making the rounds from the recent WFMU broadcast. If so inclined, you can listen to it here.

As if Buck doesn't have enough side projects to start with, it looks like he has another one. This one is called Richard M. Nixon and includes fellow R.E.M. alum Scott McCaughey and Bill Reiflin. They'll be making their live debut when they open for Young Fresh Fellows during the weekend of September 21-22 at the Sunset in Seattle. More info below as well as at this link.

Another update on Buck's new record, though I must say I wish he'd include a download code with it since it's only coming out on vinyl. That said, it'll only be a matter of time before someone converts it to mp3 anyway. By the way, the items that are crossed through in the article below are from the Seattle Weekly, not myself.

Peter Buck's First Post-R.E.M. Solo Record Features Vocals From Mike Mills, Corin Tucker, and ... Peter Buck

Former R.E.M. guitarist and Seattle resident Peter Buck has been chipping away at a solo record since his other band called it splits last year. Scott McCaughey, a longtime friend and collaborator of Buck's, tells us that the record, simply called Peter Buck, will be released under the moniker Richard M. Nixon as early as next month, possibly in time for Buck's solo shows with the Young Fresh Fellows at the Sunset, Sept. 21 and 22 (release parties for YFF's latest, Tiempo De Lujo). Buck's live band -- performing under the moniker "Richard M. Nixon" -- features McCaughey and Bill Rieflin, the last man to occupy the drum throne in R.E.M.

In an email, McCaughey said that Buck is singing on the record, and is joined by a host of guest vocalists, including former R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills (R.E.M.) and Sleater-Kinney's Corin Tucker. McCaughey lends his vocals as well. Lenny Kaye, longtime member of the Patti Smith Group, appears on guitar. McCaughey says that Portland's Mississippi Records will release the record, and, at least at first, it will only be available on vinyl.

No, there won't be a download code. No, we don't yet know what it will be called.

Note: We got some clarification from McCaughey that the band will be performing at The Sunset as Richard M. Nixon, but the album will be a Peter Buck solo album, released under his own name.
