US Memorial Day

Recommended Posts

Take time to remember and have a safe holiday.

To those who sacrificed,

To those who gave up their own

To the few who dared to stand

And to those who never came home

I will always remember

I will always be grateful

I Thank You

Definitely thinking about those who gave everything to us, so that not only us but everyone in the world may be free....

Peace, love and respect!

To quote VP Biden yesterday: "They paid a price that none of us could ever repay."

Not that I'm a goody-two-shoes, but one of the things I like to do on Memorial Day and Veterans Day is volunteer to place flags at Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Westwood...aka "Arlington West".

In memory and with gratitude for all that served...no matter what your country: U.S., Ireland, U.K., New Zealand, Australia, Netherlands, France, etc.

Indeed people have to remember what Memorial Day is for, and it's not an excuse for firing up the grill.

The D-Day Museum in New Orleans is amazing....If you are into American History or Wars for that matter, I suggest you visit there.

On another note AMC played War movies all weekend...my personal favorite being Apacolypse Now.

.........The Horror........

Mama keeps tryin’ to get the game on the radio

Daddy’s gotta know the score

There’s a big yellow thing on a flat bed trailer

Wonder what that thing’s for?

We got towels rolled up in the back seat window

Keeping us out of the sun

Just a hundred more miles and we’ll be at Grandma’s

Sure is gonna be fun

Maybe she’ll take us fishin’

Maybe she’ll bake us a pie

Remember like she did that one time

Back before grandpa died

It’s Memorial Day in America

Everybody’s on the road

Let’s remember our fallen heroes

Y’all be sure and drive slow

Ninety eight degrees in the shade of the tool shed

Can’t go back in the house

They’re all in the kitchen yellin’ ‘bout something

Don’t know what it’s about

Joey ‘n Mary said not to worry

Said it’s just the same old fight

Happens whenever they all get together

Everything’s really alright

It’s Memorial Day in America

This is how it’s supposed to be

Let’s remember our fallen heroes

In the land of the free

Daddy’s in the big chair sippin’ on a cold beer

Grandma’s cuttin’ a switch

She overheard Mary cussin’ her brother

Called him a son of a bitch

She got a good green limb off a sweet gum sapling

Man that’s bound to sting

But Mary don’t cry just stands there and takes it

Doesn’t seem to feel a thing

No Mary don’t cry, you know she’s a big girl

Wonder what made her so mad?

She takes those licks looking in through the den door

Staring right straight at her dad

There’s a big yellow thing on a flat bed trailer

Daddy nearly hit that bird

They’re both in the front seat

Starin’ right straight ahead

Neither one saying a word

The sun’s going down in the rear view mirror

Gonna be driving all night

Wonder if the neighbor’s fed the canary?

Wonder if the cat’s alright?

Don't those countries have a day where they honor their own?

They do I'm sure.

My landlady's Father was Colonel Thorp who was in the Philippines when the Japs invaded. He formed a guerrilla group and he eluded the Japs for 2 years until he was betrayed and captured. He was executed in Oct. 1943. He had 2 purple hearts and various other medals and citations and was friends with MacArthur.

They showed an old vet on the news talking about the Battle Of The Bulge and he said the Americans lost 8,300 men in 2 hours (dead, wounded and captured). He said as long as he had ammo in his rifle he wasn't going to surrender to no one because the Nazi's were killing the prisoners (Malmedy)

Thank you for sharing that. What an unbelievable time that was for those men to fight so bravely....

Like the one soldier in Europe said when his Mother told him to 'Be careful', and he said: 'You can't be careful, just lucky!'

I just watched 'Sahara' with Humphrey Bogart. Great war movie and it was like 'Battleground', only in the desert.

Then again many of them had no choice they were conscripted (apart from Presley the coward of course)

'We're in the infantry, Ben!'

My father, maternal grandfather and an uncle are all buried in a national cemetery about an hour from where I live. My family usually drives up there to place flowers on the graves before we have our cookout.

Have a great and safe Memorial Day and don't forget to thank our Vets.

Maybe The CIC can take a cue from these guys.

MEMORIAL DAY

A time for picnics, time off work -
Vacations and the "Indy" -
A holiday, too often times
We forget what, it should be.

A time to pay respect to those
Who rallied to the battle cry -
Who gave their lives for liberty -
Those freedoms for you and I.

Such a waste of brave young souls -
Some still struggling through their youth
Who faced and fell willingly
Before wartimes' awful truth.

So as we share this holiday
With our friends or family -
Take a moment to give thanks to
Those who died so we'd stay free.

Let us strive for world peace -
For the end of greed and hate -
For next time, after "the war"
It just may be too damned late.
