BON APPÉTIT! What Are You Eating?

Strider

Went out tonight at a local place. The appetizer was especially good on this hot and humid day here. Watermelon soup with mint. Also, pan fried sea scallops in a balsamic reduction with a vegetable risotto. All quite good, but felt there was a bit too much parmesan in the risotto. Of course a couple glasses of Sauvignon Blanc with that. I think it was a California, by Upper Deck, which I don't know. but enjoyable. Followed with an expresso. It's a high end place with great food and a good trouble free bar seen. People here are civil.

Last evening:

Lobster Mac and cheese at Johnnies at the West End on Portland Street, Boston. OMG. And Corona. With a lime.

Today:

We are heading out the door soon for some mini golf and steaks at a yet-to-be-determined location in the Leominster area of Massachusetts..(near Mt Wachusett)..

But for now?

An ice cold Savignon Blanc and Kettle corn.

Don't judge me.

Aww, Walter, that is very sweet to remember my husband. He is still not 100%, but much better.

And...he loves Yuenling lager!!! We can't find it here in the Worcester area!! PM me if you know where we can get it.

In a cyber sort of way, maybe you ARE joining me! Haha.

Cheers, my friend!

I've seen it in a number of stores in my area of Connecticut.

Strider, I like good burgers, but White Castle doesn't have them. Some kove them, but don't know why. Hate to spoil this for you, but I have a friend who puts Gumby in a lot of the photos he takes. But you use is better and how you have him situated and planted in the photos. Great work! :yourock:

Son of a bitch...here I thought I was being unique by NOT doing the Gnome and using Gumby instead. Oh well.

Okay, it's been Day 3 in New England...Friday spent in Boston and Saturday-Sunday in Rhode Island...so now that I've a little free time, I am going to try and give a run-thru of all the good food we've had so far.

Friday we were going to the Yankees @ Red Sox game at Fenway Park and got to Boston several hours before the game to have time to walk around. Got off the subway at the Boston Commons stop and walked around and literally accidentally stumbled upon the Cheers bar. I had a Sam Adams Boston Brick Red that was mighty good to the last drop...especially since it was 102° F. the day I arrived.

Later we met ebk and her hubby at the Cask n Flagon(voted best beer/sports bar in America) outside Fenway Park on Brookline. I cannot remember what everyone had, but I had grilled fruit and two beers:

The first was a wonderful Belgian White-style beer: Harpoon UFO White. I became addicted to Belgian Weissbier in the summertime during my years in Europe. There are few better beers for a hot summer day than a good, fresh and light on the palate Belgian White. The Harpoon UFO Wgite definitely hit the spot. Better than Shock Top's Belgian White and miles beyond the overrated Blue Moon.

The second beer I had wasn't as good: Leinenkugel's Summer Shanty. Very lemony...too sweet, too much like drinking lemonade.

Then at the Red Sox game, I tried one of the recommended sausages...Kayem's Italian Sausage with grilled onions and pepper and spicy brown mustard. Mmmmmm good. Sorry I don't have photos to share.

Saturday morning in Warwick, Rhode island I had my first ever visit to a Dunkin' Donuts for coffee and donuts. The coffee is as good as people say and while the donuts aren't the best, they have a great variety and they are still way better than Winchell's and Krusty Kreme.

For dinner, we went to a nice little pub called Mews Tavern to eat, drink and watch the Red Sox game. Thwy had a splendid beer list...one of the best I have ever seen for a small pub. They had a great deal called a 'Rack-O-Draughts': any combination of 4 beers in 7 oz. glasses for $9. That's 28 oz. Of beer for $9...a good deal in my opinion. Here's me with my rack...

post-1470-0-51537100-1374478991_thumb.jp

From left to right, the beers are:

1. Batch 19 Pre-Prohibition Lager (Colorado)

2. Allagash White Ale (Maine)

3. Revival Zeppelin Hefeweizen (Rhode Island)

4. Sam Adams Summer Ale (Massachusetts)

In order of preference, I would say best to least was 1) Revival Zeppelin; 2) Batch 19; 3) Sam Adams; and 4) Allagash White. I had a little help from my tasting buddy.

post-1470-0-23572800-1374479723_thumb.jp

For dinner, we started with some Calamari Giovanni and a Harvest Salad(apples, cranberries, blue cheese crumbles, red onions, walnuts and greens tossed with a maple vinaigrette).

For the entrees, she had Pescado Cubano(baked George's Bank Haddock topped with chipotle salsa, tortilla chips and lime, with brown rice and beans).

post-1470-0-81016900-1374480946_thumb.jp

I had the Guinness beer battered Fish n Chips.

post-1470-0-79356800-1374481066_thumb.jp

Later, after exploring some beaches and a lighthouse, we had some handmade ice cream for dessert: chocolate walnut and peanut butter cup.

I'll get to Sunday's amazing repast at Spain another time.

More glorious seafood from my time in Rhode Island.

Sunday 7-21: Dinner at Spain of Narragansett. Started with a bowl of Gazpacho. Very nice.

post-1470-0-34417900-1374737192_thumb.jp

Then came the main course...scallops broiled in champagne cider sauce, with rice and grilled asparagus w/ extra virgin olive oil.

My friend had the Basque Style Filet of Sole..Sole with clams, mussels and shrimp in a white wine, garlic and parsley sauce. Pretty good except I thought the sole was a little overcooked and mushy.

All accompanied by a fine, mellow Lote 44 Malbec from 2010.

Monday was spent hiking around Newport, R.I., checking out the Tennis Hall of Fame, the Mansions of Bellevue, and the Cliff Walk. All that walking made me hungry and we found the perfect place: Benjamin's Raw Bar. One of the few places in Newport that has Rhode Island-style Chowder(clear) as well as New England, they also cook a mean lobster. Nothing fancy, just simple boiled lobster with butter, the way lobster is best served.

The clam chowder face-off...New England on the left and Rhode Island on the right. Winner: Rhode Island.

post-1470-0-09213500-1374738740_thumb.jp

Say hello(or more accurately 'goodbye') to my little friend...a perfectly cooked 1 and 1/4 pound lobster with lemon and butter is one of the pleasures of life.

post-1470-0-87265100-1374738948_thumb.jp

All that hiking around(10-12 miles) warranted dessert. An extremely moist and fudgy chocolate cake.

Thanks Walter and chillumpuffer...it is going rather well, indeed.

Before I continue on with the parade of fish, just need to tidy up a few details, in case anyone should find themselves in Rhode Island one day. Spain of Narragansett is located at 1144 Ocean Road on the mainland part of Rhode Island, while Benjamin's Raw Bar is on the island of Newport at 254 Thames St.

I also forgot a breakfast that I had on Sunday...normally I wouldn't bother, but I think this will interest any Elvis Presley fans. Went to a place called DH's Sunnyside Up on West Shore Road and had the Elvis Presley French Toast...two pieces French Toast with peanut butter inbetween and topped with bananas and chocolate sauce. Decadent.

Now back to the seafood.

Tuesday 7-23: After a day spent wandering Newport, on this day we explored Jamestown island from Beavertail Lighthouse on the Southern tip to Conanicut Lighthouse on the Northern tip. For dinner we ate at Champlin's in Galilee, a relaxed, casual place right at the mouth of the harbor with great views of the boats coming and going as the sun set. My friend had the grilled swordfish and Rhode Island Clam Chowder whilst I had baked stuffed(w/ crab and clams) flounder and lobster bisque. The fish was good, the soups merely average. No alcohol at this meal as I needed to take a break. For I have been drinking much more than I should on this trip.

Of course, we partook of Champlin's raw bar while waiting for our dinner to arrive. From the big one on the right, the type of Oysters are Beavertail, Beavertail, Canadian Cup, and East Beach Blonde. With Tabasco, natch!

Wednesday 7-24: Before the Robert Plant concert in Uncasville, CT, we spent the day in Mystic, CT. Not the Mystic of "Mystic River" but the Mystic of "Mystic Pizza". So of course I had pizza at Mystic Pizza...a slice of pepperoni and a slice of baked potato and bacon. With a pint of Mystic Seaport Pale Ale.

post-1470-0-94296100-1374762733_thumb.jp

post-1470-0-67458900-1374762839_thumb.jp

The pizza was good, although the crust was a little more doughy than I prefer(I'm a New York thin-crust kind of guy)...the beer was a disappointment, alas. I should have went with the Sam Adams. Interesting decor note...they had a Led Zeppelin poster in the upstairs dining room.

post-1470-0-77905000-1374763138_thumb.jp

I don't like feeling loaded with food during a concert, so I didn't have dinner. Instead we had some wine at a bar in the Casino that Robert Plant was playing. A 2011 Gougenheim Malbec from Argentina for her, and a Nobilo Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand for me...the Malbec was merely okay, still a little young and undeveloped. The Sauvignon Blanc was perfect...it really hit the spot after the hot humidity of the day.

All looks great Strider. Some great seafood you've been having, being just before dinner is making me quite hungry. The alcohol can get to you after a while or doing over a few days, so taking a break or at least cutting it back a bit never hurts.

Thursday July 25: Met ebk at her hotel, where she was kind enough to share a bottle of her Red Zeppelin wine.

post-1470-0-67777500-1375103228_thumb.jp

We then were going to head to La Voile for drinks but it stated raining cats and dogs in Boston, so we repaired to the hotel bar for more libations. I had a Magic Hat #9. Mmmm, okay. Not great, but average.

post-1470-0-81983100-1375104082_thumb.jp

Later that day, had dinner in Providence at this quaint Italian restaurant, Joe Marzilli's Old Canteen.

post-1470-0-13339300-1375104284_thumb.jp

Food was good, some merely average...the minestrone tasted canned. My Scaloppine con Funghi a la Marsala was fairly tasty but my friend's Baked Haddock Sicilian Style was the definite highlight. Fresh and cooked perfectly...every mouthful a delight. I had Chianti but I neglected to note the bottle and vintage.

For dessert, my friend took me to this decadent and dangerous café called Pastiche. We sampled the Lemon Ricotta Cheesecake and the Italian Mascarpone Torte. The cheesecake was good but the Mascarpone Torte was astounding. Rich, creamy and moist, with the perfect amount of rum flavour. Along with the Haddock, the clear winner of the night and the perfect capper to our evening.
