Geezer
I just wonder -- does the footage of Jimmy playing the solo (28.07.73) exist, or was it fucked up by sloppy cameramen? I'm hoping that I'll ever see it.
SweetLittleBaby
I would be interested in knowing this as well. We know that some of the footage was either lost or otherwise not intact, which I think is the entire reason the fantasy sequences were included in the first place. Same thing with Jimmy's solo in D&C. It would be great if some of that footage surfaced, but I'm sure it never will.
Glyn
I'm not sure we'll ever know if it exists. The commonly circulating "outtake footage" is the only extra stuff I have ever seen/heard of from TSRTS (other than the Shepperton footage). Although it contains a lot of cool stuff it does not include Page playing the NQ solo.
bluecongo
Such a tragedy. Perhaps Page's FINEST moment as a soloist, missed. No wonder the band fired Massot, he totally screwed up the filming.
Geezer
We know that SOME MSG footage is included in TSRTS version of NQ. Maybe footage of the solo also exists?
Glyn
But will we ever see it? I'd probably say no but anything is possible I guess. I wonder if there are still complete-ish reels of film or if all that is left is the edited/spliced copy.
Geezer
I do think the original camera negatives still exist. A quotation from http://www.rte.ie/ten/2003/0718/ledzeppelin.html: 132 cans of film, two sets of two-inch video tape, some bootleg footage and a year of putting the whole thing together. 132 cans of film only for the interpositives of RAH and TSRTS? Highly unlikely.
Glyn
While watching the excerpts from dvd and the dvd/blu-ray reissue of TSRTS there are alternate shots that were used between the two, so it is possible.

Highly unlikely. well if you take in account that the DVD also has Earls Court and Knebworth concerts (both at least two nights filmed in full) the 132 cans of film seem rather likely. At least I think the author meant material for the whole LZ DVD to put together and not only TSRTS and RAH concerts. just my two cents

cookieshoes
Although the fantasy sequences were likely used to cover up for some parts of the show where the cameras weren't rolling, I think that it's just as likely that there aren't quite as many gaps in the shows as is frequently suggested. Shepperton was used a lot for close-ups, and to create more "rock star" camera moments that weren't present on the actual footage from the concert. So, I think the real footage probably does exist from some camera. Though, keep in mind that the band had intended to do fantasy sequences anyway, so they were always going to have to insert those over segments where the band was obviously also playing onstage. So, although it would be nice to see more of Page's soloing on Dazed and No Quarter, at the same time he was likely to just be standing there (as he did for the more tricky solos, such as Stairway to Heaven), and there are already tons of footage of him doing that throughout the movie. The parts of TSRTS where Page is seen hyper and jumping around with his guitar thrown about for emphasis were actually culled from the Shepperton footage sessions, where he was basically doing a mime of himself. Page didn't really move in that over the top of a manner when playing live. Doing so would've ruined those lovely solos we hear. When he finally did start really moving like that on stage in 75-77, that's coincidentally when his solo playing also started suffering. By that point, he was more focused on the moves than the playing it seems.
Geezer
Page's charismatic stage presence prevailed by 1977.

I'm hoping that I'll ever see it. I have wondered that for a long time too. That live NQ solo is epic.....Actually, when I heard TSRTS was being re-released I was hoping it was going to be put out without the dream sequences for that edition....they are hard to watch now..... Dallas Knebs
I like the fantasy sequences- when I was a teen they were creepy- a touch of cultural displacement being Southern raised, now nostalgic and warm
