weslgarlic Posted November 16, 2012 Share Posted November 16, 2012 I just love Woody Allen films , both comedy , and serious even Alice & September Every new films (like bob dylan albums best since blood on the tracks or desire )best since Annie Hall or Manhatten Curse of the jade scorpion is probably my favourite or hannah and her sisters ? "Curse of the Jade Scorpion" might be my least favourite of his films...there's something about Helen Hunt that grates on me. Here are the ones I consider the crème de la crème; the films I can watch over and over, whether they are playing in the theatre or on cable tv. 1. Manhattan 2. Annie Hall 3. Play It Again, Sam 4. The Front 5. Purple Rose of Cairo 6. Stardust Memories 7. Hannah and Her Sisters 8. Sleeper 9. Love and Death 10. Crimes and Misdemeanors 11. Radio Days 12. Bananas 13. Take the Money and Run 14. Everything You Wanted to Know About Sex(But Were Afraid to Ask) 15. Match Point 16. Vicki Cristina Barcelona 17. Broadway Danny Rose 18. Another Woman 19. Interiors 20. Sweet and Lowdown 21. Zelig The next group are ones that are merely good to okay, but not entirely essential...and some I have to be in the right mood for. 22. Husbands and Wives 23. Deconstructing Harry 24. Bullets Over Broadway 25. Alice 26. Manhattan Murder Mystery 27. What's New, Pussycat? 28. Casino Royale 29. Midnight in Paris 30. What's Up, Tiger Lily? 31. Mighty Aphrodite 32. Everyone Says I Love You 33. King Lear 34. New York Stories 35. Wild Man Blues 36. Small Time Crooks 37. Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy The rest are for completists only... And I imagine turning head on into the oncoming car, feeling the crush of the metal..." And WA rolls his eyes and says "Yeah, well I'm due back on the planet earth"! Then he needs a ride to the airport, so the Annie's mom says "Oh Chris can take you"...for the whole ride WA keeps looking at him so warily! Just hysterical all over! I'm not as knowledgeable on cinematic minutiae as Strider, but I remember Annie Hall was a big deal for "breaking the fourth wall". I don't think it was the first time in a major film, but I remember it being notable. I loved the scene in the movie line where he commented to the camera on the couple's observations - hilarious. Did he direct The Front? If so, I had no idea. No, "The Front" was directed by Martin Ritt, but since Woody stars and it has an Allen-esque flavour, I included it in my list. It's one of his best performances, in my opinion. And it's got Zero Mostel! "Play It Again, Sam" is another film not directed by Woody Allen on my list...Hal Ashby("Harold and Maude") directed. Having seen your posts about movies I think we have a lot in common. Except I can't cook. Deconstructing Harry is my favorite because Allen's character is an abrasive, profane sex addict.
