Recommended Posts

So it IS him, it was announced this morning that the skeleton remains found in a Leicester car park is that of the late King Richard III

Here are some website snippits of the news

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-21063882

http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/blog/2013/feb/04/richard-iii-skeleton-last-plantagenet-king-live

What I would like to know is what now?? I did read a blog concerning some of his "supporters" that he should be givin a Royal state funeral and perhaps ise final resting placewould be in York Minster.

I have been following this story for a few days and will continue to do so. Can't imagine that a Royal funeral would be held?

Thanks for posting this.

Leicester....I seem to remember a former (maybe current) member from there. No coincidence, I'm sure! ;)

It'll be interesting to see how this "proper" burial takes place. Sounds like he wasn't treated well at all during his demise.

Yes, I heard that on the radio this morning but I also heard that York, particulary the Minster and Westminster want him as well

I have followed this story too. Pretty sad a King is buried there. Where the hell are the peasants and the family cats? Of course if he died in battle perhaps this was where he was in fact killed? I do not know. Amaziing what DNA can do isnt it?

Wasn't he a major asshole? Fuck him, leave him where ya found his crooked ass.

He was responsible for introducing "The right to bail" to the British legal system, something to be applauded. As for him being a asshole, well anybody in a position of authority in those days was also an asshole. Assholes helped shape the world into what it is today.

Well I do not know how accurate and how much was written in the year 1485? The Dark Ages were named the Dark ages for a reason. This fell into the Renisannce period if my history is correct? I am not familiar with the accounts of this or most kings. One would have thought he would have been laid to rest in a better place?

'We're livin' in the dark ages ovuh deh!'----Sylvester Stallone comment on gun owners.

I believe Bin Laden compared George Bush to Richard The Lion Hearted.

Not really, that is he was no different than any other English monarch of the time and many, such as Henry VIII who bankrupted England, persecuted both catholics and protestants was much, much worse. Richard was a York, battling against the house of Lancaster for power, the Lancastrians and Henry Tudor defeated him in battle at the Battle of Bosworth after Richards second, Baron Stanley, defected due to a very large and secret payoff by the Lancastrians. Once he was defeated the house of Lancaster realized they could not hold the power for long without allies so a compromise was formed and Henry VII, a Tudor and popular with many on both sides, was crowned king. Unfortunately Shakespeare was quite a political kiss ass and that is the reason why Richard III went down in history as a hunchbacked prick. He was neither deformed nor a true prick.

I saw where a forensics specialist used the actual skull to mock up a clay face for him, showing what he looked like exactly. Was only 28 when he died? Damn, it must have been hard to be a pimp in the Dark Ages. :duel:

I think it's too bad we still aren't certain who wrote Shakespeare's works.

Duh, Shakespeare! I've never put much credence in the Earl of Oxford rumors.

I'm not so certain that it's a "Duh" issue, at least not in the minds of a seemingly increasing (but still minority) number of scholars. A newer theory has it that the Earl of Oxford was part of a small committee of writers -- Lol.

I read somewhere that the Dukes of Beaufort are descendants of the Plantagenet dynasty. Wouldn't this make the current duke the closest living relative to Richard III?

"Archaeologists have discovered the body of Richard III under a car park in Leicester. Ugly, disfigured and universally reviled... Leicester is just off junction 20 of the M1".

Seems a shame to me he has to be buried at all - his bones should go on display in a museum. (Preferably in the North; London gets all the good stuff). It's been really interesting finding out how he really was a hunchback, when it was thought for ages that this was probably just Tudor propaganda and so on. I mean, his actual bones are of interest in a way that the bones of any other monarch wouldn't be.

Putting his remains on permanent display would be uncivilized, imo. I would have thought the York Minster a better choice for his re-internment but Leicester Cathedral is also appropriate given that he died nearby. I wonder if they'll give him a memorial Mass? I also wonder if Michael Ibsen will be given an official role in the re-internment ceremony?
