Some groups don't gain acclaim with their first album, but many really grab the bull by the horns with their second album, and surpassed the first album with an even better album. Who can you think of that achieved that?

LZ II

A Saucerful of Secrets

Tarkus

Tab In The Ocean

Trepass

Acquiring The Taste

Song For America

Mirage

Si on avait besoin d'une cinquième saison

To name a few, all either as good, or surpasses the debut, IMHO

LZ2 Tarkus & Paranoid for starters

I disagree with you on Paranoid. Black Sabbath's debut album is an avalanche of sound and dynamics.

That's cool. I love the 1st album.

But, I think Paranoid is a little better. Better songs, Better Production... but not by much.

Paranoid defnately launched the band.

I also Think MOR is a little better than Paranoid.

Badmotorfinger was Soundgarden's 3rd album. Louder than Love was their 2nd (and best IMO) album.

Ultramega OK was their 1st.

I'll throw a few more in.. Dewey's list inspired me..

Hotter than Hell - KISS

Get Your Wings - Aerosmith

I know it was already mentioned - Fly By Night - Rush

Diary Of a Madman - Ozzy Osbourne

Judas Priest - Sad Wings Of Destiny

Bridge Of Sighs - Robin Trower

Don't get me wrong- the first Tesla - Mechanical Resonance is good but the second album The Great Radio Controversy kicks it's ass. I listened to this all the time while cruising in my 1972 Chevelle SS. I am listening to it for the first time in years now- just a scorcher.

In addition to the ones already mentioned:

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere - Neil Young

Countdown To Ecstacy - Steely Dan

Ram - Paul McCartney

The Rolling Stones No. 2
