redrum Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 I wrote a letter to my brother yesterday and when I dated it I realized that Feb. 19th was the day the Marines invaded Iwo Jima. I found this site on Joe Rosenthal who took the flag raising pic. Also, pics of iwo Jima today. I met a vet who fought there and he was a camera repairman in San Francisco. My landlord's brother also fought there and brought back a beautiful, hand carved pipe with Japanese writing on it. But it's mind boggling to think that almost 30,000 men were killed on the island in one month. http://blogs.denverpost.com/captured/2010/04/27/on-war-joe-rosenthal-and-iwo-jima/1743/ http://www.iwojima.com/today.htm Quote
redrum Posted February 24, 2013 Author Posted February 24, 2013 No one wants to check out Joe's unseen photos from Iwo and other Pacific battles? For shame! Quote

Many I'd never seen before and I never knew that Rosenthal was at these other battles. He's damned lucky to have gotten out alive himself. Quote
redrum Posted February 26, 2013 Author Posted February 26, 2013 Thanks for the links redrum....the men on that island went through a hell you and I will never comprehend. I have a cassette tape of the actual invasion recorded originally on a wire recorder. It's amazing to hear the prop planes firing rockets at the Japs and the reporter describing the beach landing. There's some humor too and a part where a Marine tells the reporter that someone stole a Jap flag from him after he was wounded. http://www.pimall.co...rerecorder.html Quote

It was a true slaughterhouse. A good book on Iwo is titled 'The Friendly Dead' Quote
