L.A. From The Byrds To The Eagles

At the start 60s Los Angeles was hardly on the music map in the states but that all changed as the 60s progressed. By the end of the 1970s it was the artistic and industrial hub of the American music industry. A new BBC documentary called Hotel California; L.A.From the Byrds to the Eagles was on Showtime Feb. 28 It was a great chronicle of the early days. its really in depth and an excellent documentary of that era in American music.

[The Only Way To Fly]

That Legends of the Canyon was really very good. I also liked the Doors People Are Strange as narrated by Johnny Depp - LOTS of 16MM film of Jim & the band. Really enjoyed both films. I just watched Sound City the other day ( the Dave Grohl doc) & that was pretty cool. I'm down loading that search for sugarman doc & looking forward to that as well.

I like how it mentions the Byrds,Crosby Stills Nash and Young,The Beatles, Bob Dylan,Woodstock and ties it all together. I do like the Eagles but not crazy about them. I will have to check out Legends of the Canyon and Sound City for sure..

I also recently watched Searching For Sugarman. I knew next to nothing about the movie going in which I believe to be a good thing as the less you know about it beforehand, the more enjoyable it is likely to be. I've since learned more about the circumstances surrounding his career but I won't divulge anything here other than to say, it didn't really change my outlook on the movie as a whole. It was still pretty mindblowing even knowing about the whole picture.

Keep meaning to see "Searching For Sugar Man", this reminds me, thanks.

While I still enjoyed "Searching for Sugar Man", and knew it was going to win Best Documentary when the nominations came out, it does overstate some of the particulars of his career to heighten the drama of the story.

Haven't seen the "Hotel California" documentary yet, but I want to recommend some good books related to the topic that will provide greater depth and context.

Boy you've got that right, just finished reading it! Full disclosure, I like the Eagles. I think Don Felder is one of the more underrated guitarists in rock, that guy can really play. And they treated him like garbage. I actually ordered the History of the Eagles DVD and plan on watching it tonight. I'm prepared to be pissed off at Frey and Henley all over again!
