Stormbringer
Link: http://www.novinky.cz/kultura/298153-billy-joel-chysta-turne-a-vzpomina-jak-ho-nastvali-led-zeppelin.html I just came across this article. Its in Czech language, so none of you would understand it, so I will translate the part about Led Zeppelin here (the article is about Billy Joel going to perform again and that he doesnt want to play only his major hits, but also a lot of less known stuff). (he) went to Led Zeppelin, they didnt even play Whole Lotta Love "I would love to play Surprises or songs like Shes Right on Time and Laura and Sleeping With the Television On as well, but then I remember, how I went to a Led Zeppelin concert in Madison Square Garden and they didnt play one single hit. Not even Whole Lotta Love. They just jammed some blues. I went out very unsatisfied and I thought to myself "I dont know any of this bullshit"." So, what cought my eye... what concert could he be talking about? Was there a concert in MSG where Led Zeppelin wouldnt play Whole Lotta Love or ANY of "big hits" (I asume he would be familiar at least with Stairway and DaC?!?!)??? Afaik they played Stairway on ALL the concerts since its introduction, right? Sounds weird to me...
Matjaz1
Must have been a special concert just for him, beyond the river! But then again he was never a spiritual man! He could remember lots and lots of names and events thought and write a nice chorus to them!
Walter
Well Billy is a drunk, right? Maybe he passed out when Jimmy was tuning up for TSRTS in '77....
mstork
I could be wrong but I once saw Billy Joel quoted as saying, "Rock and roll died when John Bonham died." I do think he's a fan but I think he's confused in this case!
ScarletMacaw
I think Walter may have hit the nail on the head. As we get older our memories start to deceive us, also. Maybe he had a bad dream about Led Zeppelin and is confusing it with reality. As I think about it, I would enjoy a concert of Led Zeppelin just jamming on the blues... THUNDERZEP
I don't know any of this bullshit? Bullshit? Really? Zeppelin could have played Mary Had A Little Lamb or Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and it would have been better than ANY band playing ANY song live. Sagittarius Rising
I like BJ but I think he may have been loaded for this interview.
Jetcat1
I saw BJ in Chicago, it must have been spring of 1991. At one point in the show and between songs, he said something to the effect of " If we were a four piece band, this is what we'd sound like....". The launched into "Good Times, Bad Times", and the place went nuts. I'm sure he's a fan, but what the hell he's talking about I have no idea.... Maybe the Page/Plant tours of the '90's? ksgemini
having read every set list Zep have done in existence I don't know where that's coming from...My mother and cousin dragged me years ago to see Billy Joel and it was ALL "greatest hits"...not my thing anyway but, this is an odd quote. Bong-Man
I'm still trying to figure out why everyone thinks Billy played such a great set at the 12/12/12 concert. The man never smiled once and he looked like he was going to explode from constipation.
Trapper
There might actually be a (little) truth to this, if Joel ever really said this. I remember having read somewhere that Whole Lotta Love was played on all gis played after LZII was realeased but - unbelievable - it wasn't always part of the main set. In some cases it was played as an ecore, and in some shows a short version was played, which lead into for instance Black Dog or Rock and Roll. If Joel left before the encore (which, if he was dissapointed by the choice of songs played, is realistic) then he coud have missed Whole Lotta Love and mistakenly believed it wasn't played that night. (Perhaps Joel left the gig early because he wanted to get back to his uptown girl? Who knows...) - peace all -
mckjuana
What else does he have to say?
SuperDave
If he really feel he experienced this, than it would have to be the short encore versions of WLL, they played in 75 and 77. Although, the 75 versions started to stretch out a bit the last part of the tour such as is LA.
