Glyn Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 Hi there. Is there any live version of Black Dog where the band gets the part from 0:39 to 0:53 right? TSRTS sounds about right to me. Any example of when they mess it up? Quote
Geezer Posted May 10, 2013 Author Posted May 10, 2013 TSRTS sounds about right to me. Any example of when they mess it up?No. Listen closely to that part on the studio version. Quote
Melcórë Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 ...Huh? You need to be more clear -- what are they getting "wrong"? Quote
Led Dirigible Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 It's not "wrong". They just pay it different from the studio version. If I understand it correctly, in the studio version of Black Dog, Bonham is playing a straight 4:4 beat, while Page and Jones play in 5:4 over him. In live versions, Bonham, Page, and Jones all play in 4:4, avoiding probable song derailings brought on by complex time changes. Quote

Sorry, I don't agree with that at all...every live version I have heard sounds like they are playing the same timing as the studio: Jimmy and Jones in 5/4 and Bonzo in 4/4. Some versions might be played faster while others more slower, but the timing remains the same. As to the OP's question: I don't hear any thing "wrong" in live performances of this section...at least not the ones I have listened to. Like another poster said, you're going to have to be a little more clearer about what you mean by "wrong". Oh, and FYI, that youtube clip you posted doesn't work. Quote

Aside from my incorrect assumption that they were all in 4:4, I really don't see anything that they were doing wrong. Quote

That clip is just the studio version of Black Dog. What I mean is that the three band members are playing in a perfect sync (if that makes sense) on the studio version. Every version I've listened to has either Page going slightly sloppy on the riff or Bonham phoning it in. Quote
ledzepfilm Posted May 13, 2013 Posted May 13, 2013 You're probably just hearing Bonham slightly slow down for a minute on the studio version just before they break into the main riff again. Quote
