THAT'LL be the day... Home state gig for me, too! And, it was apparently really good, based on the silent video and review(s)

Well, I've heard from a couple different sources -not sure how reliable they are, mind ya- that the Greensboro '77 soundboard does exist...possibly even in the possession of our good friends at EVSD, so anything's possible, I s'pose...

so no word on the best sounding/most complete version of 1973/05/31?

very far from the best concert recording, but i'd grab dadgads version of the audience. it sounds complete to me.

edit: and sounds very good. way better than the sbd to me.

Earls Court 1975 were five separate concerts in 1975, Madison Square Garden 1973 had three separate dates...which concert date are you going by?

You also neglected to mention "Thank You" and "Communication Breakdown" as part of How the West Was Won, which I assume you meant to represent the June 25, 1972 show? Because the official HTWWW release does not include "Louie Louie" at all, let alone "Thank You" and the others. So why list "Louie Louie" at all?

It's all rather confusing and seemingly arbitrary what criteria you're using to reach your conclusion.

I'll throw my vote in for a three-way tie, depending on which era of live Zepp is one's preferred prescription: 3.09.70 at Montreax for earlier Zepp; 5.31.73 at Inglewood for middle-era Zepp; 6.21.77 or 6.23.77 also at Inglewood for later Zepp (depending on whether you prefer a more energetic show [21st] or a more consistent show [23rd]).

Apart from the professionally recorded stuff like MSG and Knebworth, the best concert recording I heard was Southhampton Jan. '73. That stood out to me compared to the rest. Some stuff from '75 like Brussels or L.A. sound decent, but the Southhampton recordings sound best to me. I'm probably missing a ton, that is just one that I can remember off the top of my head sounding really good.

San Diego 3-12-75

Wrong date or wrong city. Since the 3-12-75 concert was at Long Beach and with the exception of Mike Millards 25 minute fragment at the end, the tape quality is poor, I assume you must mean San Diego. Which means either 3-10-75 or 3-14-75, as those were the two shows in San Diego in 1975.

I'd say 1979-07-24 is a pretty good choice, good recording with the band on fire with one of the best setlists they ever played, probably the best TYG ever and a brilliant ALS

Another one would be Montreux 1970 as mentioned before

I want to give the MSG shows in 1973 some praise too, the best Roberts voice was the whole year and good soundboards

You think so? Better than Providence & Baltimore?

Oh yes, That July 24th, 1979 Copenhagen show is simply amazing, one of the best gigs they ever played and with the best set list. The only thing which could have made this show better would have been an acoustic set.

On the whole though either the LA 77' run of the 21st & 23rd, or the SD run in 75'.

Not one of the "best" sounding recordings, but Offenburg 1973 ranks up there for me because it's so atmospheric. Like 4/28/77, the actual sound isn't the best, but it's so roomy and atmospheric that it sounds kickass.

Other than that, I agree with IpMan and the others. Southampton 1973, Montreux 1970, Blueberry Hill, LA '77 run, the '75 soundboards to name a few. Copenhagen 1979 is nuts- the setlist was extraordinary and the group was really feeling it the 24th. I really enjoy the 9/29/71 Japan "soundboard" out on so many releases. The band was on fire and the recording captures that amazingly.

Not too many great recordings from 1972. The LA June 25 audience tape is the first one that comes to mind. Peter Grant and crew must've really been cracking down on the tapers in the audience that year! :whistling:

Did you try it my brother!!! Hint almost every recording

I am sure most of us already know about the Black Beauty site. But since your two posts were so random and cryptic and practically word-for-word identical, it gave the appearance of spam rather than someone looking to engage in constructive discussion. No hard feelings.

9/29/1971. Agreed.

Millard's 6/21/1977 is the best recording, as many of the posts refer. But run the Tropical Isle Challenge. Only one recording allowed to be flown in for you, to be listened to for an indefinite time, till you're picked up by Gilligan. What do you ask for? Not the best recording but the best, most durable performance, to be listened to for the duration. Take 9/29/1971 first. If you can bribe the bush pilot then 6/21/77 a close second..... usually... till I think about 2/12/1975. If Sue, Nutrocker, and Strider can't agree, maybe we should ask JP. Then he can confound us all, dip into his vault and release his best recording, say a soundboard of 6/22/1977.....

Good discussion!

Interesting way of thinking about it!

If I were to take that route, I would most likely pick (in no particular order)

1.) 4/28/1977, that one is a personal favorite and the 1977 show I most often go back to

2.) Offenburg 1973, I've become attached at the hip to that show, never gets old

3.) Blueberry Hill, probably the show I go back and listen to the most, there's a reason it's such a good show!

4.) Japan 9/29/1971, band is on fire and the setlist is spectacular

Most likely I would pick one of those four, which of those four I would pick depends on my mood ;)

NOW, if I were to use the Tropical Island Challenge and allow myself one show per year to listen to into the Twilight Zone, I would pick:

1968-1969: it's a tie between 4/27 or 8/31. I think 8/31 wins, though

1970: Blueberry Hill 9/07 or Montreux 3/07 - I could live without Royal Albert Hall

1971: Japan 9/29, Leicester 11/25, or BBC 4/01 - love Japan, but Leicester kicks ass and the BBC show is awesome counting the quality of the show

1972: 6/25 takes the cake for me, hands down. Uniondale 6/15 is good, too

1973: Offenburg 3/24 really sticks out for me, not too many other 1973 shows stay in constant rotation for me

1975: I really dig MSG 2/12 or Inglewood 3/24 - I could do Earl's Court 5/25 as well

1977: Cleveland 4/28 or any of the LA shows would make me a happy man! I also like Forth Worth 5/22

1979: Copenhagen 7/24 all the way!

1980: Either Frankfurt 6/30 or Berlin 7/07

Interested to hear what other people would choose if they had to do it under the Tropic Island Challenge ;)

1968-1969: August 31st - Texas Pop Festival [shoutout to 4/27 San Francisco]

1970: September 19th - New York (Evening Show) [shoutouts to 3/7 Montreux & 9/4 L.A.]

1971: September 29th - Osaka [shoutouts to 5/3 Copenhagen & 8/21 L.A.]

^^ give Frankfurt 1980 a chance! Find the matrix!!

My favorite and 2nd favorite from each year,

1969- San Francisco 4/27/69. 2) Texas 8/31/69.

1970- LA Forum 9/4/70. 2) Montreux 3/7/70.

1971- Orlando 8/31/71. 2) Japan 9/24/71 (Your Time Is Gonna Come!) 9/29/71 is close though. If LA shows were better.... :(

1972- LA Forum 6/25/72. 2) Alexandria Palace 12/22/72.

1973- Southampton 1/22/73. 2) Seattle 7/17/73.

1975- Vancouver 3/20/75. 2) Earl's Court 5/25/75.

1977- LA Forum 6/23/77. 2) LA Forum 6/21/77.

1979- Knebworth 8/4/79. 2) Copenhagen 7/24/79.

1980- Frankfurt 6/30/80. 2) Switzerland 6/29/80.

I have a feeling that if high quality soundboards or audience recordings existed from each LA Forum show my list would be LA FORUM!!! Definitely the greatest place for live Zeppelin. Millard should have been there in 1971 and 1973!!
