Why did Robert decide to send so many digs to Jimmy?

Recommended Posts

It was in 1998 and it was a serendipitous meeting, but my job tends to create these types of opportunities. Anyway, I was introduced to both of them following their sound check in Vancouver. I spent about 3 minutes with both of them, and then Robert tried to drag Jimmy off back to the hotel (they came in separate cars). Jimmy stayed with me, and we hung out for about an hour and talked and drank bottled water. Then I accompanied him as he signed some autographs outside the arena. There was more to the story, but I also escorted he and his assistant back to the Bayshore Hotel, as the Molson Indy race was in town, and they had no idea how to make their way through the all the traffic mess in town. I had tickets to the show the next day, and was given a back stage pass, but I did not get to see either of them again. I also went to the post show press conference, but they did not show, as there was nothing that needed to be addressed. So we ate some food and left. It was a remarkable experience, and Jimmy is a prince of a man. Robert was typical Robert. I got both of their autographs and stil have the backstage pass in my collection. I have been a massive Zep fan since 1979. Nice to meet you kenog.

Nice experience. Thanks for sharing.

I am glad you did. Sometimes, I wonder too if he looks at this forum. I also agree with Stairway, there is no better way to describe him than as a 'prince.'

would be nice if they popped in now and then,it is their forum after all and we are their fans and we did help a bit make them famous!!

I barely even heard Jimmy send any digs to Robert except once in an interview with Coverdale for a swedish show once. But Robert seemed to continuously send shots at Pagey, thoughts?

I think for the most part it is a sign of affection for former band mates, get the three remaining members together and they go into Zeppelin mode.

When The Who got together for a meeting, someone always lost a tooth or left with a black eye.,,,I think it comes down to band politics ....

I go back and forth on this. On the one hand, I prefer that bands keep their internal conflicts private. On the other hand, I can see the value of getting shit out in the open. It forces the concerned parties to deal with a problem instead of sweeping it under the rug. That's usually the healthier approach in the long run. From my admittedly outsider viewpoint, Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend appear to have a good working relationships now despite their past conflicts. Perhaps they sorted out the major issues between them during those fights.

Everyone has missed his little dig to Jimmy in the center of the new interview that comes before about over 5 minuetes before he is talking about the boxsets. He says "I was in a band a little too long with Jimmy Page that all I wanted to play was Billy Fury numbers."

David Coverdale had the best name for him, "His Royal Darkness."

Hello aen ... I heard this comment too and wouldn't want to exaggerate it as a "dig to Jimmy" . I think as much as anything it's a reflection on Robert's own changeable musical focus: it felt to me that the Jimmy element was incidental to what he was saying, and as for the Billy Fury conclusion ( ridiculous!) pretty sure that's just RP's sense of humour...

I think what should be said is that - although he's been so determined to underline his own separate musical identity - RP has been so much more gracious in his language about JP and JPJ than we've seen in previous years.

The videos which sparked this thread are very harsh to watch ( at least for me: I hadn't seen them ). They were, however, a LONG time ago and it seems to me that however deeply felt their tensions might be, all the band members are now much older, wiser, and more courteous in public.

Even Robert.

Those 1988 interviews were harsh and hard to watch for me too. They were also new to me. Just having heard the new one from this week in its entirety today, I was a little surprised with his comment in the current interview as I was surprised when he says in the second older one that had Jimmy been a good boy he could have played on the whole album [Now and Zen]. It made me think that for him Zep ran too long, done with his humor. I think the Billy Fury thing was referancing the Honeydrippers?

... Since I have finally got round to contributing to this thread I should say :

Pottedplant, I'm very much with you, very well put

and The Dark Lord, thanks for sharing a story which really underlines the point many people have made, and which, I think, is pretty true to others' experience too.

I really think Disco, with Zeppelin they will tease each other, but when it becomes Led Zeppelin they are as thick as thieves.

That's no doubt where Hot Dog comes from.

and no offense.. that's a terrible nickname Coverdale came up with.... We're talking Jimmy Page, not Ozzy Osbourne..

None taken, but the next best name really comes from Catherine James in her book, which I have used as my siguature since: "The ever dazzeling Mr. Page."

Truth and Beauty - thanks and good to see you back on the board. Since we are talking about digs...the best one ever came from Jonsey at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. When he went to the mic to have his say, he politely said: "This time I'm glad my friends remembered my phone number." Way to go Jonsey. The audience laughed loud and hard. Boys, this is what you get when you don't "respect the Jones."

I loved it too, and you can just see Maureen's hatred or unhappiness at the Kennedy Honors.

I didn't react to those Youtube videos the same way as most seem to have. Then again, I am more thick-skinned than most. People have conflicts and mentioning them is not the same as slandering or name-calling. I doubt Page was offended by any of those remarks. After all, they got back together in the 90s. In any marriage, it's not how much you fight, but whether you make up afterward.

It was only my observation after re looking at it more recently. It wasn't a matter of being a fan or not. If I am not wrong, she would have every right to be irritated by her husbands exclusion for Unledded. I was delighted that Jonsey was able to get that in his in Rock Hall speech. Jimmy even smiled. I agree that Maureen looks very good still. Charlotte does also, even though she and Jimmy aren't together, they share 2 grandchildren.

I didn't notice this Aen. I will go back and watch again. The boys seemed to be happy. Robert was obviously very emotional and it was very touching to me. I am just happy they are all communicating again and seem to be getting along. Now about those box sets....

Robert and Jimmy are and will always remain friends, I think, but their temperaments are extremely different. There are various interviews where Robert has said things that I don't particularly like, even apart from the ones that have been discussed here. And it is true that he sometimes makes unnecessary, somewhat nasty asides about other musicians (not talking about Jimmy here). Well, I don't really like that either. But hey, Robert is allowed to be himself ... and there was a rather lengthy period where he obviously felt a need to put some distance between himself and JP and the whole Zep legacy. You can criticize that if you're so inclined, but what's the point? He needed to go off at the time and record Shaken 'n' Stirred or whatever. That's what he's supposed to do, as an artist - what he is keen on doing and what he believes in.
