Strider
Last night I finally got to see GOBLIN in concert! If you are scratching your head and asking yourself, "Who or what is Goblin?", then you have sadly been deprived of sufficient exposure to the weird and wacky world of 1970s Italian horror cinema...or Giallo as it is called. Goblin is the Italian prog rock band responsible for the magnum opuses that form the scores of many films of the Giallo genre, including several Dario Argento classics: "Deep Red", "Tenebrae", and "Suspiria". They also did the score for George Romero's "Dawn of the Dead". The original 1970s one. "Once in a lifetime event" is a phrase that gets overused too often. I mean, it's great to see the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin and all. I feel blessed and lucky to have been able to witness such concerts. But Led Zeppelin toured the U.S. eleven times, and the Rolling Stones have around the same number of U.S. tours under their belt. The odds were pretty much in my favour that I was going to get a chance to see them. Even a supposed recluse like Brian Wilson, I have seen five or six times since his career rebirth after hooking up with the Wondermints in 2000. But Goblin's FIRST-EVER tour of North America is truly a once-in-a-lifetime occasion. People have been waiting nearly 40 years for this opportunity. As such, when these shows were announced it sold out lickety-split. In fact, demand was such for the L.A. show, they added two additional nights to the originally scheduled one, and also added extra dates to the North American tour. All October they have been performing in Philadelphia, New York, Montreal, Toronto, Boston, Detroit, Denver, Vancouver, Seattle, San Francisco, and many other cities across the land. After Los Angeles, they finish up the tour in Austin, TX. It's not October...it's GOBtober. Playing music from a plethora of their beloved scores, as well as their albums, Goblin created magic on the Egyptian stage last night. Tonight is the third and final night of the Los Angeles stand. Thanks to my pals Grant and David at American Cinematheque for hooking me up...and to the people at Beyond Fest for making this event happen. Some photos from last night... The venue...The Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Blvd. Goblin signing stuff before the show. Edited October 23, 2013 by Strider

Strider
Wednesday October 23, 2013. Went back for another night of Goblin, this time taking my godson, who is a big horror film fan. This was the third and final night of Goblin's Los Angeles tour-stop. Next stop is Austin tonight and Sunday. The night went like this: Cocktail reception and meet-and-greet from 6 to 8pm...concert from 8:25 to 10:10 and then after a small intermission, the film would screen around 10:30 or so. The Dario Argento films shown were... Monday 10.21: Suspiria Tuesday 10.22: Deep Red Wednesday 10.23: Tenebrae The first hour of the concert would be Goblin tracks from their own albums and EPs. Then they performed music from "Dawn of the Dead"/"Zombi", "Tenebre", "Suspiria", "Deep Red", and "Phenomena", while running scenes from each film on the giant screen behind them. After many different permutations of the band due to internal strife, this is as close to the original Goblin as you're going to get. Founding members Massimo Morante (guitars), Claudio Simonetti (keyboards), and Maurizio Guarini (keyboards), augmented with Bruno Previtali (bass) and Titta Tani (drums). We had much better seats Wednesday night...front row!...than I had Tuesday. Edited October 25, 2013 by Strider
Strider
Some photos of the film scores part of the concert. I was thinking TypeO would fit in well with this band. Suspiria Dawn of the Dead/Zombi Encore/Fine
