mono243
Hey all.. newbie here, a huge Zep fan like most of you, but admire Page's playing above anything else - he inspired me to pick up a guitar 15 years ago and has shaped the way I hear and play music. I came across this photo a while ago, allegedly of the February 1972 performance in Kooyong Stadium, Australia: As you can see, it is amazing. The thunderclouds gathering are just so ominous.. It was posted on a forum here: http://forums.aeroforceone.com/viewtopic.php?t=69899&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15&sid=6f659b7216b898c40b3095b05bd896e5 and the only info I can find about it is that: its scanned into a Zep bootleg called "Shivers and Shakes" and was part of the inner booklet it was also used as the cover on Dave Lewis' book on Zeppelin "The Concert Files" I have LOVED this photo for so so many years, and I am very eager to find out who has the original negative so that I can get a high-res version as a print/poster to hang framed on my wall... Does anyone know who took this photo or how I could get in contact with someone with a higher-res version? Cheers Andy I h

SteveAJones
One answer...our man down under, the venerable Leo Ishac That's one answer, but is it THE answer? If not, anyone with a copy of the Dave Lewis book 'The Concert File' should be able to confirm the photo credit it was given.
Cookie0024
20th February 1972, Kooyong Stadium, Australia for sure. The Concert File merely states that the photo comes from the Kooyong show, but doesn't list the photographer.

It's conceivable that he descended to directly behind the stage for the photo above. Sadly, looks like Alex has passed away recently. https://www.facebook.com/photonetgallery/posts/516315541766248
mono243
wow thanks guys, really useful stuff any ideas about how to go about contacting someone with the negative though? seems a bit insensitive to speak to Mr Gall's family!

johnseaweed
Hi All, I'm new to this forum lark, so excuse me if I make any errors. I was at the Kooyong concert at the ripe age of 13 (what were my parents thinking!), and managed to get a seat near the front. At the time there was an Australian music paper called 'Planet' that did a feature on the concert, and a photo very similar to this one was included as a double spread. I've kept it all these years, as a souvenir but also because if you look closely you can see my mug! Anyway, there were no photo credits with the article, but the paper had a general photo credit and listed there is Ted Keogh. If you google Ted Keogh you can find him (he's still a photographer), but he didn't respond when I wrote to him. Now, elsewhere in this forum Leo Ishac describes how he tracked down Ted Keogh and bought all his negatives of the Zep Australian concerts. So, I can only assume that Leo Ishac currently has the negatives. Does anyone know how to contact him? Like you, I'd dearly love a print of this photo, my souvenir newspaper is getting a little old and yellow. I'd like to convince my daughter that I was there! Cheers, John

johnseaweed
My mistake, should have read to the end of Leo Ishac's story (posted by SteveAJones), where he says that he sold off his entire collection to an unnamed UK collector. Anyone with any ideas? Cheers, John

Rembetis
I don't know who the photographer was. It was not Alex Gall from the Herald Sun News Pictorial. I met Alex in 1980 outside the old Herald Sun newspaper. He had a vague memory of the gig, "It was LOUD!!!!", he said in his broad Scottish accent. The only time that the picture was printed, at the time, is as stated above, on the cover of 'Planet' magazine. Many years ago I acquired what I believe to be the only original, photographic print of this image from the original negative. In 1996 before Jimmy Page and Robert Plant came to Australia, I made a high quality, oversized negative of the photograph and made a large copy of the image in order to get it autographed, if the chance presented itself. When Jimmy saw the photo he was taken aback by it and asked about the original. I explained that I had it in my collection. Jimmy really took a liking to it; I had no other option than to do the right thing and gift it to him. Unfortunately there was no credit on the rear of the original photo. After that the image appeared on the cover of the "Concert File" book etc., etc., I still have the negative, but I actually wish that I still had the original image. I haven't seen Leo Ishac in a long time. Leo did not find Ted Keogh, I found Ted Keogh. I had his proof sheets after our first meeting, after which I made an approach to him to purchase his original negatives. He refused, and I could not work out why. This was whilst I was still at high school so, 1981-2. I met Leo for the first time in 1988, after I had been to the first LZ convention in New Jersey. Leo became quite enthusiastic after that first meeting and after a while I gave him a number of leads which I was unsuccessful at cracking, one of them being Ted Keogh. Ted sold him the photos without question as he somehow admired his 'professional background'. Ted said to him that some young high school kid had been to see him some years earlier and he didn't want to sell them to him as he thought that the student would disrespect his negatives and just move them on. Bad judgement call Mr. Keogh! In my possession they would still be in Australia. After a while Leo sold all the images that he had in one lot, primarily the ones that he had the negatives to and had acquired the 'copyright' to as well. For whatever reason, and I respect Leo's decision at the time, he did not offer me the first refusal on the purchase of these images. He sold them to a collector in the UK, and yes I know who that was at the time. So there are stories and there are stories. Sometimes the myth is greater than the truth. I'm really thrilled that the Kooyong image made the inside cover of the the Deluxe pressing of LZ IV.
johnseaweed
Thanks for the follow-up, and to see that the photo has found a home on the deluxe LZIV. It's not the exact photo from the Planet paper, but where that might be is anyone's guess. Cheers
