Korn, Anthrax, Twisted Sister, Poison Drummers Confirmed For Next 'Bonzo Bash'

Recommended Posts

The next "Bonzo Bash" will take place on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at The Observatory in Santa Ana, California.

"Bonzo Bash" is the "celebration show" that John Bonham freak/worshipper/drum lifer Brian Thomas Tichy (Whitesnake, Foreigner, Ozzy Osbourne, Billy Idol) put together to pay tribute to the one and only drummer he has never stopped listening to and being inspired by since he was 10 years old.

One day in 2010, Tichy thought it would be a pretty simple and cool idea to put an amber acrylic replica drum kit at the front of the stage and one by one, have some of the world's best drummers pick their favorite Led Zeppelin songs and have a house band of buddies (dubbed "The Moby Dicks") perform these songs with these drummers. Tichy told this idea to promoter bud Joe Sutton (another Bonham/Zeppelin freak) who loved it and happened to have the exact night on hold at Key Club in West Hollywood. This was the 30th anniversary of the passing of John Bonham (September 25, 2010). Called "Bonzo: The Groove Remains The Same", it brought together 20 drummers on one kit celebrating the man, John Bonham, who continues to prove to be without a doubt the most influential drummer in all of rock 'n roll! The night was attended not only by world-class drummers Chad Smith, Kenny Aronoff, Danny Carey, Abe Laboriel Jr., Steven Adler and many others, but also by the Bonham family, including son Jason, daughter Zoe, sister Deborah (all of whom performed in the show) and wife Pat! A magical event is an understatement and it has been likened to a rhythmic wildebeest crossing without the crocs!

The night and the pace of the celebration is like no other. The music of Led Zeppelin is some of the most popular in the world so every song goes over amazingly. The anticipation of which drummer will play next and which song they will choose keeps the audiences interest all the way up to final percussion jam where every drummer is on stage with percussion in hand as they all take turns for a last go-round on the kit!

The celebration includes the element of spontaneity ensconced in a well-prepared, organized backyard party! Anything can happen and it's encouraged! ...Much like a Led Zeppelin concert as no two were ever the same. Drummers take chances, the band retains up to 5 hours of Zep tunes, unique arrangements, intros and endings, and high fives are thrown all over the stage after every song! The Moby Dicks are as much fans of Bonzo, Zeppelin and of the drummers who take the stage that the energy coming off the stage is undeniable and felt to the back of the venues every time!

If Carter Beauford of the Dave Matthews Band was on the list - This "Bash" would be seriously interesting but

as it stands these drummers are just using the Bonham name to create interest in their own talents - of which

none can hold a stick to either John's or Carter's immense talents...

Believe me, I'm the #1 fan for this tribute. I've worked with Tichy on the first few Bonzo Bashes, however with the frequency that these are being cranked out, IMO, it's turning into more of a cover band playing Zep tunes. It's diluting the tribute cause.

Somehow I missed this thread...

I don't know some of these names, but there are some great players on this list..

Believe me, I'm the #1 fan for this tribute. I've worked with Tichy on the first few Bonzo Bashes, however with the frequency that these are being cranked out, IMO, it's turning into more of a cover band playing Zep tunes. It's diluting the tribute cause.

Maybe. Isn't it only once a year? If that's the case, I respectfully don't agree.

I don't like to see anyone milking John Bonham's legacy either. But, a once in a year thing to me doesn't do that..

Brian Tichy's is an incredible drummer.

If Carter Beauford of the Dave Matthews Band was on the list - This "Bash" would be seriously interesting but

as it stands these drummers are just using the Bonham name to create interest in their own talents - of which

Carter's amazing, but not having him participate makes it a deal breaker for you?

I'd like to see some others on the list too, Steve Smith, Gavin Harrison, etc.. but I'm ok with the players on it.

Fuck me,I can't understand the hubbub and the people talking in the background while Bill Ward was speaking. If I was at a venue and Bill was talking to the crowd with none less than Carmine Appice sitting next to him I'd be hanging on every word.

At least the organisers and the world class drummers on stage and in the background had the good sense and manners to listen.

Bless you,Bill.

Thankyou luvlz2 for posting!

Bill Ward was presented with a 'Lifetime Achievement' award at the 'Bonzo Bash' and spoke about John Bonham.

From blabbermouth

Legendary BLACK SABBATH drummer Bill Ward was presented with the "Lifetime Achievement" award at the Bonzo Bash NAMM Jamm 2014 "The Ultimate Celebration To The Ultimate Drummer - John Henry Bonham Of Led Zeppelin", which took place on Thursday, January 23 at The Observatory, in Santa Ana, California. You can watch video footage of his acceptance speech below.

Ward recently underwent surgery for perforated diverticulitis, a very serious gastrointestinal condition in which the walls of the intestine have become perforated. His operation was said to be successful, and he was expected to make a full recovery.

Ward revealed in an interview with Rock Cellar that he tried to listen to last year's SABBATH reunion album, "13", but had to stop after just a few minutes. Ward said, "The only thing I've heard from '13' is maybe 40 seconds of the first song, and then I turned it off. I haven't heard anything off that album at all. And to be quite honest, I don't care to either. It's too painful. If I want to rip my guts out, I'll put it on."

Ward, the group's founding drummer, has played on and off with SABBATH over the years and had initially signed on for the original lineup's first album in 35 years and accompanying tour, announced in late 2011.

But he quit shortly before the writing and recording of the disc began, saying he was dissatisfied with the terms of the contract he had been offered.

Although he never specified what his issues were, the other members of SABBATH later hinted that Ward was not physically up to the task of performing live.

It was rumored that SABBATH wanted to bring a second drummer on the road to share duties with Ward, which he allegedly balked at.

SABBATH used RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE drummer Brad Wilk for the recording of "13", while Tommy Clufetos has been the live drummer.

Ward added that he remains "deeply touched" by the outpouring of support that many fans have shown him, saying, "It tears me up, you know. Even as I'm talking to you now, I'm not far away from a tear. I had to follow my heart under the most difficult circumstances."

SABBATH has been touring for much of the past year behind "13" and has dates lined up in North America in March and April.
