slave to zep
this one is not set-up. Rik was at an event listening to a speaker, when he was recognised by a fan who was filming him. Instead of getting angry or moving away, he did this ..... p.s. OMG he was so good looking!

Ady
Thanks for starting this thread, I am devastated about his early passing.... just loved him, and his shows. R.I.P. Rik ♥ Yeah, me too. I could not believe it when I first saw the news, so tragic. this one is not set-up. Rik was at an event listening to a speaker, when he was recognised by a fan who was filming him. Instead of getting angry or moving away, he did this ..... p.s. OMG he was so good looking! Excellent, not seen that before! I came across this earlier, a rather lengthy interview with Rik and Ben Elton from 1985 for an Australian TV show. He messes about quite a bit and talks quite seriously as well. Great stuff! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cvp1TmrSqY8

SozoZoso
"There were times when Rik and I were writing together when we almost died laughing. They were some of the most carefree stupid days I ever had, and I feel privileged to have shared them with him. And now he's died for real. Without me. Selfish bastard." —Ade Edmondson

scylla
I was just remembering his series "Rik Mayall Presents" and wishing I could see them again... and lo and behold, they're on YouTube. A shame his serious acting career never really took off - these show he really had something as a straight actor as well as a comic. (And when he wasn't gurning for comic effect, he was so good looking). Perhaps if Stephen Fry hadn't gone to Bruges, it would have worked out. My favourite, "Dancing Queen": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_d0kkton-Iw

My favourite, "Dancing Queen": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_d0kkton-Iw loved it. I agree, he was a good actor, and could have had a third career as a model, I reckon .... Ben Elton once introduced him as "the best looking guy in show business " or words to that effect .... what do you mean by the Stephen Fry remark? Strider
What sad tidings lately, and finding out about the death of Rik Mayall was one of the saddest. I spent a large chunk of the 1980s watching "The Young Ones" and "Bad News". Henceforth, I tried to keep up with Rik's work as best I could, but given the nature of American TV broadcasting, it wasn't always easy, even with the advent of the BBC America channel. Thankfully, there is youtube, where I have found tons of Rik Mayall I had no idea existed. For instance, that "Dancing Queen" one. Such a shame. 56 is too young to go. R.I.P. Colin Grigson. Ben Elton once introduced him as "the best looking guy in show business " or words to that effect .... what do you mean by the Stephen Fry remark? Not long after "Rik Mayall" presents, i.e. when Mayall was perhaps making a bit of a push to get into "serious" acting, he appeared in the play Cell Mates, as has been mentioned above. The play got bad reviews, especially for Fry, but a lot of the reviewers singled out Mayall as being the one good thing in it. Then Fry had (to oversimplify what is obviously a complex issue) his mental breakdown, and skipped town. He was missing for a few days, and it was big news in the UK at the time - all this stuff about how the police were searching his house and he might have committed suicide and so on. Meanwhile, the play closed, the producers lost a lot of money, and Mayall was furious - I think he refused to speak to Fry for a long time, though they did make it up in the end. Fry came home and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, but he didn't "come out" about this for some years after - about how he had a history of mental instability going back to his teens, how he had come very close to killing himself on the night of his disappearance (he shut himself in his garage and sat in his car for hours, wavering between gassing himself and just running away) and so on. He also made an excellent documentary, "The Secret Life Of The Manic Depressive", started doing ads for mental health charities and the like, and generally became much more open about his problems than he had been right after the Cell Mates episode (when a lot of people basically labelled him a selfish crybaby who had run off and left a bunch of people in the lurch because of a few bad reviews). I think it was then that people came to realize that he had actually been very ill, and became more sympathetic.

Ady
Great stuff StZ, thanks! Strider, have you checked out Filthy, Richard & Catflap? Only one series was made, the BBC decided not to make anymore for some reason and never repeated it either. Everyone I knew liked it though. I bought it on video when it finally got released in the 90s. The whole series seems to be on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXTDrrdOb0o
