R.I.P. B B King

Recommended Posts

What a loss. One of my favorite guitarists, regardless of the genre. Others in the thread have already posted the song, so I won't go for the trifecta, but The Thrill Is Gone is probably in my all-time Top 10 songs, and I've been playing several versions of it this morning.

Death makes no distinction, but at least the great cosmic rock band has another kick-ass guitarist to take over when Jimi has to use the bathroom or something.

I'm convinced BB King would have wanted to be a part of the perfectly suitable RIP thread.

So many of his contemporaries have been just dying to get into it.

Listening to some BB King today, I went and listened to 'Hummingbird'.

It's the EXACT same song as 'HummingBird' from Page's Outrider Album. It was a very pleasant surprise.

Steve A. Jones, you're a scoundrel. Hehe.

That's because they're both covers of the Leon Russell written tune. Check the album credits.

Here's another scorching meeting between B.B. King and Gary Moore...playing "Since I Met You Baby":

One thing I love about New Orleans is their upbeat way of dealing with death. Don't wallow in grief but celebrate the person's life. So in that spirit of uplift, here's a little levity to make you smile...B.B. King on "Sanford & Son", starring Redd Fox.

I first saw him in the early eighties at a place called the Circle Star, it had a round rotating stage and regularly featured great soul music. The crowd was half over 35, well dressed, black people and half under 30, white hippies! I was surprised that ! could take my drink back to my seat!

I saw him again in the late nineties at the beautifully restored Paramount theater in Oakland. Henry Kaiser opened, then Santana played. We didn't have tickets so we hung out by BB's tour bus. A few of BB's Oakland friends showed up, old men by then, and hopped aboard the bus for some kind of senior level parting. Right as we were about to leave, a friend showed up with extra tickets, we got our seats about two minutes before BB came on stage.

Both shows were awesome!

If you're talking about BB's most classic song, the one most people identify with him, then it's gotta be between "The Thrill Is Gone" and this one..."Lucille". Pure soul blues pouring from his fingertips:

He CERTAINLY deserves his own thread. I have cried so much today. Most of you know how much I loved this mans music. I saw him over 20 times, more than anyone else. He will always rank my 2nd favorite guitarist just behind Jimmy. What an Icon and what a joy that we have all of his wonderful music..not to mention the numerous influences on other great musicians, but he was something special to me.

R.I.P. The KING OF THE BLUES !!!

Tonight and Monday on PBS they will be paying tribute to this great man.

Uuugh gutted... another legend lost. I'm grateful for the superb music that is with us, but still so sad when the man and all of who he was and what he lived behind it all has passed. Rest in peace, BB, and thank you.
