List of first performance of every song

What Is and What Should Never Be was played at Royal Albert Hall, January 9, 1970

Ugh you are correct! I looked at Bristol 1/8/70 and Finland 2/23/70 and it wasn't played at either so I concluded Montreux was the 1st, but forgot about RAH.

Anyway, does the rest of my list look correct? I went through tons of shows making sure they were right, but WIAWSNB snuck past me.

haha yea I figured you'd be kicking yourself on that one. Just noticed Bring it on Home, which was played at Albert Hall too. The rest of your list looks good. (and you're right about Seattle 72, what a show!)

Pretty damn impressive Klape! This will definitely come in handy.

I noticed a typo on Dancing Days (you put 1972/11/19), hopefully you can edit that while it's still recent.

Houses Of The Holy was never performed live during 1968-1980, but possibly during the Page and Plant era though I'm not sure.

I believe the first Moby Dick we have is from the Paris Olympia show, October '69, date escapes me, you know, from the LZ 1 remaster

When ya think on it "Moby Dick" is a hard one to pin down. The original vehicle for John Bonham's concert drum solo was "Pat's Delight" which was probably played at the earliest "New Yardbirds" Scandanavian dates in the fall of '68. All they really did was change the "Pat's Delight" intro/outro music (which I much prefer to "Moby Dick" by the way) to the "Moby Dick" intro/outro music in '69. Of course in '77 they had to confuse matters further by using the "Out On The Tiles" intro and "Moby Dick" outro for the drum solos, renaming it "Over The Top".

I thought about pointing that out! But concluded that by going for the actual intro/outro titled Moby Dick would make everything simple. I have to agree that I prefer the intro/outro of Pat's Delight over Moby Dick, but does the intro of Pat's Delight sound a lot like Crossroads by Cream..?

Sounds more like Toad by Cream IMO.

It's a cool riff, but come on fellas, the Moby Dick riff is legendary!

Nice work everyone! I swear though that Ramble On was played in a medley once during a live performance from 1970, yes, no, maybe so??

EDIT: just found it - November 2nd, 1969 in the O'Keefe Center, Toronto, Ontario, CA. They play a part of the song in "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You." Check it out at 4:29. Not sure if you can consider it the first live performance, but they do interplay a bit in the middle.

They also did throw it in some medleys in 1970:

March 21, 1970, Vancouver, BC

March 25, 1970, Denver, CO

April 17, 1970, Memphis, TN

September 9, 1970, Boston, MA

August 7, 1971, Montreux

I'm sure Bobby Parker* would agree with you

* Bobby Parker is the 50's R & B guy who wrote a tune called "Watch Your Step", the riff of which was liberally 'borrowed' for use in, among others, "I Feel Fine" and "Day Tripper" by The Beatles...and "Moby Dick" by Led Zeppelin!

Nah, I Feel Fine is much closer to Watch Your Step than Moby.

For Moby Dick I think the intro/outro riff is the base too what we called Moby Dick. Thanks Icondo for your help, I add it as a secondary link.

What is and what should never be was on bbc session 24 jun 1969

I think its first live bootleg appearance was 12 oct 1969 @ London lyceum

For What Is And What Should Never Be, I found London U.K. (BBC Live) 3/19/1969. I'm not exactly sure about the BBC Sessions. Like is the 4/1/1971 show considered a live performance? There's obviously people clapping at the end of each song, but there's definitely a difference between the BBC Sessions and a typical live performance. I always wonder why Jonsey didn't play his Organ Solo before Thank You on the 4/1/71 show, unless he did..? Can someone shed some light on what exactly the BBC Sessions were?

Either way good input. I completely forgot about it being performed in 1969. It was a rare song that year as was Whole Lotta Love being performed in San Francisco 4/26/1969, I had to get the show when I seen it listed as the 1st performance! I am still confused by why they played it on the 26th and not the next night, but those were the days...

We're only including live first performances of songs in front of a audience right? If not, then Carouselambra technically was played "live" in May 1978. Or they might have rehearsed it in May 1980 as well. Don't know how authentic it is.

(May 1978, Clearwell Castle, Wales, UK)

(May 1980 Victoria Theatre, London, UK)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqKCkW-mbMY

Also, if you are including soundchecks like you did for Night Flight, then The Wanton Song had a souncheck supposedly on July 6, 1973 in Chicago.

For the Zeppelin-era performances, you can find everything you need here:

http://ledzeppelin-reference.com/geekbaseweb/songlistpage.aspx?toggle=0&sort=0

Lists the setlists, dates, venues, etc for every Zep concert, including song lengths of each version performed. The link above is to the "Songs" section, where you can search all performances of every song the band played, covered, or even teased a bit from. Includes first and last performances and everything in between.

Awesome site. Not mine, btw.
