England

I'd love to visit England one day. Not only do I want to see London, I want to see Liverpool, Cambridge, William Shakespeare's birthplace...the list goes on. The thought of flying there scares me though because I've never been a huge fan of flying, and it's been 16 years since I've been on a plane.

You must come, flying is safe as any other transport....don't go to Stonehenge though as its a bit of a let down, bit like The statue of liberty....tiny :)

Hi Juilet,

I'm with you 100%, but when retarded town planners keep building houses on flood plains this is what you get. If you go check out where the worst flooding has been over the past couple of decades i would be surprised if you dont find a large urban development nearby. ;)

World’s oldest man, one of the last WWI veterans, dies

300h.jpg

Henry Allingham

July 19, 2009

LONDON - The world’s oldest man, 113-year-old World War I veteran Henry Allingham, died yesterday after spending his final years reminding Britain about the 9 million soldiers killed during the conflict.

Allingham was the last surviving original member of the Royal Air Force, which was formed in 1918. He made it a personal crusade to talk about a conflict that wiped out much of a generation. Though nearly blind, he would take the outstretched hands of visitors in both of his, gaze into the eyes of children, veterans, and journalists and deliver a message he wanted them all to remember.

“I want everyone to know,’’ he said during an interview in November. “They died for us.’’

Only a handful of World War I veterans remain of the estimated 68 million mobilized. There are no French veterans left alive; the last living American-born veteran is Frank Woodruff Buckles of Charles Town, W.Va.

“It’s the end of an era - a very special and unique generation,’’ said Allingham’s longtime friend, Dennis Goodwin, who confirmed the death. “The British people owe them a great deal of gratitude.’’

Born June 6, 1896, Allingham left school at 15 and was working in a car factory in East London when the war broke out in 1914.

He spent the war’s first months refitting trucks for military use, but when his mother died in June 1915, he decided to join after seeing a plane circling a reservoir in Essex.

Only a dozen years after the Wright brothers first put up their plane, Allingham and other airmen set out from England on motorized kites made with wood, linen, and wire. They piled on clothes and smeared their faces in Vaseline, whale oil, or engine grease to block the cold.

“To be honest, all the planes were so flimsy and unpredictable - as well as incapable of carrying large fuel loads - at the start of the war that both British and German pilots would immediately turn back rather than face each other in the skies if they did not enjoy height supremacy,’’ Allingham would later write.

As a mechanic, Allingham’s job was to maintain the rickety craft. He also flew as an observer on a biplane. At first, his weaponry consisted of a standard issue Lee Enfield .303 rifle - sometimes two. Parachutes weren’t issued. He fought in the Battle of Jutland, the largest naval battle of World War I. He served on the Western Front.

After the war, he worked at the Ford motor factory and raised two children with his wife, Dorothy. She died in 1970, and when his daughter Jean died in 2001, friends say he waited to die, too.

That’s when he met Goodwin, a lay inspector for nursing homes, who realized that veterans of Allingham’s generation were not getting the care they needed to address the trauma they had experienced.

He encouraged Allingham to share his experiences and the veteran soon began talking to reporters and school groups, the connection to a lost generation. He found himself leading military parades. He was made an Officer of France’s Legion of Honor.

He met Queen Elizabeth II and wrote his autobiography with Goodwin, “Kitchener’s Last Volunteer,’’ a reference to Britain’s minister for war who rallied men to the cause.

Allingham remained outspoken until his death.

“I think we need to make people aware that a few men gave all they had to give so that you could have a better world to live in,’’ he said. “We have to pray it never happens again.’’

I hope I live that long so I can suck the social security system dry.

I'm sure they would appreciate yout thoughts Juliet. Even though it's terrible for those concerned it's on a far smaller scale than most other countries experience. Floods are probably the major natural disaster here seeing as we don't get major forest fires or tornados or earthquakes or hurricanes or severe winters etc etc.

On another note, I still can't believe how mild it still is. Almost December but it's not even chilly. Very wet and windy at the moment, but not in the slightest bit cold. At least, not where I live.

I see you will be getting the snow that was in Canada's East coast last week...take care,eh?

Juliet :coffee:

Ah yeah but this is English snow, which has been documented as the worst type, it's Latin name Exageratus deepnessus Chaoticuus comes from the Greek binaplus ultra, meaning - more than 2cm.

And now the country has ground to a halt! I've even heard that one town has not had its delivery of salt, so they may run out in 2 days, quite franky i'd say that they are gonners

Below is a quote I just read.

Margaret Thatcher: "The trouble with Socialism is, sooner or later

you run out of other people's money."

Smart woman.

Hi Jabe,

The only thing "Smart" about Maggie T was her suits, that woman has done more damage to Britain in general, and England in particular, than the Romans, Normans, Saxons, Vikings, French, Scotch-Paddies-Welchers and the Germans put together, there is no illness or disability bad enough for me to wish it on her, i fcuking hate the woman with such venom that i think I'm turning in to a Snake, shall i go on folks?

Regards, Danny

She'll never die, Dan. Even the IRA couldn't take her out.

If there was ever anyone who fucked this country up, it was surely her.

Yep, you guessed it, I'm no song-smith. :(

But it did snow all last night, and all fcuking day today, I'm going nowhere fast, I've canceled Easter too, this is the start of the next ice age and i expect I'll be living on a glacier this time next year, wheres global warming when you need it? or is that on another thread?

Kind Regards, Danny

Hi LDW my lickle chicken, ;)

You're not wrong there my lovely, but what really gets my goat is that the media act like she was better than best bitter, before she got in to power i had a grand in cash in my wallet every week and i held down two jobs and did a bit of tea leafing on the side as well, when she finally got the push i had lost the shirt off my back and had five buttons in my pocket for change, and that's how she left the country as well.

IRA, Uh, don't make me laugh, they couldn't hit a elephant with an atom bomb at 100 paces, all they were good for was killing women and kids at a memorial service, i remember when one of their guys bomb went off on a Bus in the Aldwych in Central London, and he only hurt himself, what a tosser, a terrorist using London Transport, no wonder the bomb went off early, the Bus always runs half an hour late.

I'm glad that i got that off my chest, anyway, how are you? you haven't been posting much and you are dearly missed, by me anyways.

Kind Regards, Danny

Oh, Dan, you make me laugh. You do have a way with words

I come here every now and then, but right now I've got too much and not enough here is taking my interest. I'll make an exception just for you, though. Besides that, I'm surprised we even have any electricity to get on the interwebs, what with our gargantuan snowfall...

I hope the weather's been kind to you and yours.

Hi LDW, many thanks for your kind words, i do deserve them don't i?

I do mean it when i say you are dearly missed though, even if i don't agree with what you are saying, which is seldom, you keep the forum moving along with your witty banter and off the cuff remarks, or is that me? still i do enjoy your posts, however boring, which they are not ever, or maybe i should just shut up? :yes2:

Well you come and talk to us when you can my lovely, whenever the interest takes you or when you can find the time will do for me, the weather is, blizzardy at the mo, a foot of deep snow, nowhere to go, the plants wont grow, that's me composing a song for you, and yes before you ask I'm stuck here on the computer, bored out of my brains with nothing better to do than chat you up, how am i doing? that bad hey? well it gives the trolls around here a laugh doesn't it.

Take Care and Kind Regards, Danny

PS, don't forget too keep cool will you?
