Recommended Posts

From Billboard:

Lou Reed

Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

Lou Reed will serve as the keynote speaker for the 2008 South by Southwest Music Conference in Austin, Texas. The artist will discuss his career March 13 as part of the kick-off of the event, which will also feature a screening of the Julian Schnabel film "Lou Reed's 'Berlin.'"

Also confirmed to speak at SXSW are composer Steve Reich and Sonic Youth frontman Thurston Moore, Hall & Oates principal Daryl Hall and Sire Records founder Seymour Stein.

Among the artists due to perform during the March 12-16 bash are My Morning Jacket, Daniel Lanois, Mala Rodriguez and Dokkebi Q.

Last year's SXSW was keynoted by the Who's Pete Townshend, who also made several on-stage appearances during the event.

I've been going fairly regularly since an older brother moved there in '97. I dunno, I seemed to fit right in being a music freak and all. I love the record stores and live music there. There's always something going on. During SXSW it's even harder to keep up with everything but I do love trying.

South By Southwest Showcases Announced; R.E.M., My Morning Jacket Lead the Way

The South By Southwest line-up is in, and it is predictably massive. Among the marquee names playing the Austin arts festival are R.E.M., My Morning Jacket, N.E.R.D., Ice Cube, the Raveonettes and Kevin Shields (sans My Bloody Valentine). The four day event will also showcase a bunch of Rolling Stone favorites (Kate Walsh, Black Mountain, Bodies of Water, Holy Fuck, Santogold, MGMT, Ingrid Michaelson, White Denim) and a couple of our Best Bands on Myspace winners (Airborne Toxic Event, the Voom Blooms.) There are also twenty bands that begin with the word “Black,” a group from Uzbekistan (Navruz), a band named after Wayne’s World’s Tia Carrera and eighties pop group Was (Not Was). Rock Daily will be on the scene from March 12-16, reporting on the best shows, best parties and pictures from the festival. In the meantime, check out the entire list of bands performing at the event after the jump.

Holy shit O_O

That's quite a few bands.

Yes, it is. I think some folks have the wrong impression of SXSW by thinking it's a "festival" when in reality it's a music conference aimed at the music industry. I have only been once but I have no problem saying the amount of choices was daunting. You begin to acclimate after a few days by not trying to do it all because it won't take you long to figure out, that's impossible. Then's when you begin to deviate from your original path and start catching bands you never had any intention of seeing. That's the true beauty of SXSW to me.

Thanks for the updated list. That's cool to know that badges aren't needed in order to see those bands. Unfortunately, we're not attending this year. We were there the last three years and just thought we'd take a break from it this year. I know that, once it kicks off, we will be sorry that we're not there.

At music festival South by Southwest, organizers are shutting down corporate events from article about SXSW in today's WSJ:

March 14, 2008

Heavy Meddle:

Music Festival

Limits the Party

Once Rock's Rebels,

South by Southwest

Becomes 'The Man'

March 14, 2008; The Wall Street Journal, Page A1

AUSTIN, Texas -- At the storied South by Southwest music festival, a new group has been cast in the role of rock 'n' roll rebels: the suits.

Late Wednesday, on opening night of this year's event, Ticketmaster and four of its subsidiaries sponsored a party hosted by Moby. The DJ and musician spun classic Rolling Stones tunes inside a white clapboard house here, sending the packed dance floor into a frenzy. Projected on the front of the house was Ticketmaster's logo -- the company is renting the home as a place industry executives can find "round-the-clock VIP treatment" throughout the festival.

Music fans have long been conditioned to cringe at such corporate displays and admire the free-spirited folks who organize music festivals. But at the 22-year-old SXSW, as this event is known, the tables have turned. The festival folks, not Big Business, are looking like the heavies. The reason: Parties like the one Wednesday night aren't sanctioned by SXSW, which has increasingly gone to great lengths to discourage or shut them down. They're calling in complaints to fire marshals and taking party promoters to court.

Roland Swenson, managing director of the festival's parent corporation, SXSW Inc., says such corporate-backed, invitation-only parties threaten the "democratic" spirit of the annual affair. Such events are generally limited to a VIP list of invited guests. As a result, South by Southwest revelers who have paid up to $650 for access to all sanctioned "showcases" find themselves turned away from private events that also feature popular bands -- and have their own corporate sponsors.

The battle between festival organizers and outsiders, which has been heating up in recent years, has given a sharp edge to this year's SXSW. The festival is the music industry's answer to spring break. It is a boozy, five-day affair where fans and industry insiders roam streets closed to traffic and filled with the din of more than 80 nightclubs. It's a place where new bands come to get discovered, stars seek to burnish their indie credentials, and executives come to share ideas.

Rebel Image

But as it has grown -- this year, more than 1,600 acts are performing for 24,000 attendees -- its rebel image has been somewhat tempered. The festival now has deep-pocketed sponsors, for example, including Citigroup Inc., Miller Lite and Dell Inc. They pay between $100,000 and $200,000 each in exchange for having their logos plastered around town.

The Journal's rock and pop critic Jim Fusilli is blogging from Austin, reporting on live events and talking to notable and emerging musicians.

One concern among SXSW organizers is that as more bands play outside events, music lovers could have less reason to pay for the festival itself. The parties also represent competition for sponsorship dollars and venues. For instance, one unaffiliated concert is sponsored by Tecate and Dos Equis beers.

The festival's organizers have filed lawsuits over use of the South by Southwest name without permission. They have also blacklisted those who don't play by the rules. A few years ago, Mr. Swenson's team revoked festival badges from a group of marketing executives and editors at music magazine Revolver after the monthly hired big-name acts to play private parties. Some were barred from attending for four years.

Such growing pains often afflict edgy arts scenes that begin outside the mainstream and then get successful enough to become establishments unto themselves. Utah's Sundance Film Festival has evolved from a small event for the insular world of art-house cinema into a giant happening overrun with corporate sponsors and major media companies. Edgier rivals like the Slamdance Festival have sprouted up in its wake.

At last year's SXSW, Mr. Swenson took extreme measures against the unaffiliated events. He reported more than a hundred parties to fire officials saying they were in makeshift venues and could pose a danger to public safety. He says his goal was to create a level playing field for the festival's official venues.

He got results. On a Friday evening last March, more than 1,000 people showed up at a warehouse for "Austin Blowout 2007," a massive dance party that DJ and record-label owner Franki Chan had organized. Mr. Chan says he spent six months and thousands of corporate sponsors' dollars on the bash.

Around 11 p.m., a surprise guest arrived: a fire safety inspector who told Mr. Chan that, without a public-assembly permit, the party would have to be shut down. Escorted to the stage by fire officials, Mr. Chan told the sweaty throng the party was over -- and then invited the departing revelers to grab leftover cases of beer on the way out. "A lot of hotel rooms got trashed that night," Mr. Chan says.

In all, nine parties were shut down during last year's festival, costing some hosts tens of thousands of dollars. This year, many outside party organizers have hired a consultant to expedite their city permits.

Free Booze and Gift Bags

Mr. Swenson won't say specifically whether he plans to call the fire department again this year, but does say, "Do the fire marshals have a list of the parties? I'm sure they do. If they didn't get it from my people, they got it from the newspaper."

Mr. Swenson and two partners founded South by Southwest in 1987 as a forum to bring together up-and-coming bands with record-label executives and other industry personnel. "We figured if we could get 150 people it would be a success," Mr. Swenson says. Instead, 700 showed up, mostly from New York City, Los Angeles and Nashville.

Almost all these shows take place at nightclubs that are under contract to SXSW. The clubs aren't paid directly, but sign on because of the potential foot traffic and bar sales. By contrast, the unsanctioned parties are often held in warehouses, parking lots and other improvised venues. But they can nonetheless be lavish affairs complete with big-name bands, free drinks and gift bags.

Patrick Bourland and James Cartwright arrived in Austin yesterday morning after driving from their homes in Los Angeles. The two friends, both 24, say they came without tickets or hotel reservations. "We figured we'd find the free shows," says Mr. Bourland. So far, their lack of planning hasn't panned out: They were already denied entrance to a free show sponsored by National Public Radio and featuring Vampire Weekend, the buzzy New York rock band. The venue was full.

One makeshift party space this year, a parking structure temporarily known as the Texas Garage, has room for 3,000 revelers. The venue's sponsors include Dewar's Scotch, Gibson Guitar Corp. and Le Sportsac. Sneaker company Saucony is paying to build two 50-foot shuffleboard courts; revelers can cool off in two swimming pools on the site. On Friday alone 40 music acts are scheduled to play on four separate stages.

When an event uses the South by Southwest name without permission, Mr. Swenson says he doesn't hesitate to take action. Before last year's festival got under way, a small concert promoter used the name "South by Southwest" in soliciting corporate sponsorships for a Yoko Ono concert that was to take place in Austin during the festival. Because the concert wasn't affiliated with the festival, South by Southwest sued for trademark infringement in the Travis County Civil District Court in Austin. The concert promoter, New York-based JellyNYC, canceled the show.

"The legal fees were too much for us," says Sarah Hooper, a partner in JellyNYC.

Potentially the biggest concert taking place during this year's festival week is a free, unaffiliated show for 8,000, cheekily called Mess With Texas, and featuring alternative-rock stalwarts the Breeders. The band was also invited to play at the official festival, but decided to go with Mess with Texas because of the expected high turnout, says the Breeders' manager Richard Jones.

Mess With Texas

Sean Carlson, the 22-year-old organizer of Mess With Texas, says his sponsors include JetBlue Airways Corp., Tecate and Dos Equis beers and Garnier Fructis shampoo. JetBlue is also sponsoring five other concerts or parties, some of which are part of South by Southwest, some unaffiliated. "Attendees don't know the difference between official and unofficial events," says Tara Ryan, the airline's manager of national promotions. "This mix gives us the broadest possible exposure."

The sponsorships have enabled Mr. Carlson to put on the event free of charge so it could be accessible to people priced out of South by Southwest.

"There's kids in Austin that struggle paying for a $10 ticket," says Mr. Carlson. "How are they supposed to get a wristband?"

Mr. Swenson, for his part, can see how the tables have been turned on him. Despite the outsiders' corporate sponsors and glitzy trappings, they position themselves as the underdogs, he says: "They're the rebels and we're 'The Man.' "

I heard very good reviews on the radio of the van morrsion and rem performances. Heard rave reviews on -my morning jacket....opinions of, this band is about to really break into the mainstream. -rita houston, from wfuv in ny, said it was one of those shows, where she wished everyone she knows and loves were there to experience it together.

I have the cd -z from them, looking forward to this next record which is supposed to be really good.

Also heard comments on the unknown bands...and apparently alot of bands out of -spain were really impressive.
