Top Five Boots From Each Year 69-77

I know there's probably a lot of bootleg lists already, but I thought I'd throw my two cents on the table. I picked out what I thought were five essential boots from each touring year between 1969 and 1977, judging by sound quality versus performance and omitting anything that has been officially released (BBC Sessions, etc.). Input and comments about other shows are welcome.

1969

Jan. 5- West Hollywood, CA (Live at Whiskey A Go Go). Sound quality alone makes this a treasure.

April 24- San Francisco (The Dancing Avocado). Amazing sound and playing. Jones is up front and showing off.

April 27- San Francisco (Fillmore West).

June 27- London (Playhouse Theater). Radio show featuring an interview. Great sound and performance.

Aug. 31- Dallas, TX (International Pop Festival). Great sound. Some of their best playing from the entire year.

1970

Jan. 9- London (Royal Albert Hall). One of the top three on just about any list. Amazing sound and performance.

March 7- Montreux (Casino De Montreux). Explosive show with excellent sound.

March 21- Vancouver (Pure Blues/Mudslide). Decent sound with monumental performances of several songs.

April 8- Raleigh, NC. Good sound with one of the best White Summer/Black Mountainside performances.

Sept. 4- Inglewood, CA (Live On Blueberry Hill). Good sound with a rare Bron Y Aur performance. Very long set list.

1971

Aug 31- Orlando, FL (Orlando Magic/Florida Sunshine). Patched soundboard with thunderous drums.

Sept. 4- Toronto (Maple Leaf Gardens). Patched soundboard with the best Celebration Day performance.

  Sept. 9- Hampton, VA.

Sept. 14- Berkeley, CA (Going To California/Berkeley Daze).

Sept. 29- Osaka, Japan (Festival Hall)

1972

Feb. 25- Auckland, NZ. Energetic show with decent sound.

Feb. 27- Sydney, Australia (Sydney Showgrounds).

June 22- San Bernadino, CA (Swing Auditorium).

  Oct. 2- Budokan, Japan.

Oct. 9- Osaka, Japan (Festival Hall).

1973

Jan. 22- Southampton University (Any Port In A Storm). Multitracked!

March 16- Vienna, Austria (Happiness Is A Warm Gun). Hands down the best playing by Page.

March 23- Offenburg, Germany (It's Not Warm, It's Hot).

May 13- Mobile, Alabama (Alabama Getaway).

May 19- Ft. Worth, TX (Tympani For The Butter Queen). Excellent soundboard.

1975

Feb. 6- Montreal (1975 World Tour). Page playing like his old self.

Feb. 12 Madison Square Garden, NY (Flying Circus/Four Blocks In The Snow)

March 3- Ft. Worth (Rock Super Stars). Bonham breaks loose on this one.

March 21- Seattle (Deus Ex Machina). Probably the most impressive show of the tour.

May 25- Earls Court (Demand Unprecedented In The History Of Rock). Great soundboard and long set list.

1977

April 27- Cleveland, OH (Destroyer). Very balanced soundboard, good performance.

May 21- Houston, TX (The Dragon Snake). Great balanced soundboard, though Page is slacking a little.

June 21- Los Angeles Forum, California (Listen To This Eddie). Monumental live performance.

June 25- Los Angeles Forum, California (Badgeholder's Annual Meeting).

June 27- Los Angeles Forum, California (Mike The Mike). Rare acoustic Dancing Days.

Edit: I'd like to change the June 27, 1977 show to June 23rd, 1977. Much better playing from Jimmy.

Nice list!

For 1971, I'd probably swap out 9-9 Hampton for 9-23 Tokyo (Flying Rock Carnival Complete or Flying Rock Carnival 2011 Remaster) - great audience source, and fantastic performance.

I also think May 21 '77 Houston is overrated. The recently circulating 5-22 Fort Worth soundboard sounds better and is a better performance. Also the recent-ish 5-30 Landover MD soundboard sounds almost as good and is a great '77 performance too.

It was actually a toss-up between those three 77 shows, and I chose Houston based on sound quality and thinking Page was just slightly better there. It has some highlights like Kashmir and that Alembic really cutting through on Nobodys Fault But Mine.

Awesome, thanks for taking the time.  I have noted this for when I have leave this summer and can reserve many hours and really enjoy entire shows of the better boots.

I guess '79 there is only the warmups and Knebworth shows, but what about 1980? Nothing at all? I'm wondering if Zurich and Frankfurt are the top shows (I keep going back to them for my TU fix, haven't heard all of '80)

That's a pretty good list!

For 1970, I'd swap out Raleigh for the MSG 9/19/70 evening show. Recording may not be perfect but the performance is as good as.

For 1971, I'd swap out Toronto and Hampton and instead put 5/3 Copenhagen and 9/23 Tokyo (like tmtomh said). Copenhagen may be a bit distant sounding, but the rare setlist and Plant's voice make it a must hear imo.

For 1972, I'd swap out San Bernadino and instead put in 6/25 LA - Burn Like a Candle. A classic in every sense of the word. And maybe swap out Auckland for 6/15 Uniondale.

For 1973, I'd substitute Southampton for 1/15 Stoke. Great sound and the performance is much better imo. I'd also swap out Fort Worth for either 6/2 San Francisco or 7/17 Seattle. Both excellent performances captured in great sound quality.

For 1975, I'd substitute Fort Worth for 3/12 Long Beach. Easily one of the best performances of the year, and the sound is pretty decent for the most part. And instead of Deus Ex Machina, I'd put the AUD/SBD matrix for 3/21 Seattle. While they occasionally go a bit out of sync, the blending of the two recordings really makes the performance sound more "alive".

For 1977, I'd swap out 4/27 Cleveland for 4/28 Cleveland. The latter is a much better performance and the sound is still pretty good.

Still a great list and your choices are very interesting. A mix of classics with some more underrated/underappreciated gems. :)

Burn Like A Candle is one of my favs, but I intentionally left out anything part of an official realease, like How The West Was Won. But I'd encourage anyone to listen to the entire unedited show.

And I definitely leaned toward sound quality over performance so new listeners wouldn't be turned off immediately. Otherwise there would have been more Japan shows from 71.

I would go as far as to say the first four shows of Europe 80' are excellent (up to Rotterdam). Then Zurich & Frankfurt.

Well shit I'm an idiot! I saw above that you eliminated anything that was part of an official release and then I listed one anyway! :P

In that case, I'd replace BLAC with 6/15 Uniondale. Outstanding show with great sound quality (minus Beavis and Butthead and friends not shutting up).

Fort Worth 8/23 actually.  Dallas 8/24 not avail.    But FW is awesome,  has my.favorite Heartbreaker

Wait. The tape for Fort Worth 8/23 starts in the middle of Dazed and Confused. Are you sure you're not thinking of a different show? Or do you have a different version that no one else has?

I don' t have anything different trust me.  I just like what' s available

Sorry, I should clarify: the tape starts in the middle of Dazed and Confused, which was the song performed after Heartbreaker, meaning that, at least as far as I know, we do not have a recording of Heartbreaker from 8/23 Fort Worth. You must be thinking of a different show.
