Why the Tolkien hate....

There's more than a few references and it's all so hippie. I don't mind it so much myself. A reflection of the times. If those songs were written now they'd be named after corporations and feature product placement:

Ramble On

Leaves are falling all around

It's time I got out my

John Deere leaf-blower

thanks to Ramada

I'm much obliged

for such a pleasant stay

But now it's time for me to go

my On-Star GPS guides the way

For now I smell the rain

and with it pain

And Doppler 4 radar says

it's headed my way

Sometimes I grow so tired

But I know I've got one thing to do

Ramble On

One thing I never get is how haters love to mention the VERY FEW Tolkien references by Robert in a few songs....why do people think that is so lame....I always dug it....thoughts?

I thought it was cool too. Unfortunately it's fuel to make comparisons between Zep and metal acts like Dio who ran with the fantasy motif. That doesn't bother me but it apparently bothers Robert.

What did Robert say?

Dio: 65 and still singing like a mother.

It's always bothered me because I am C. S. Lewis and outside the occasional hardcore rap song nobody seems to want to reference Narnia in their music.

I love it when LOTR is mentioned in Zepp's songs. I personally think the lyrics (maybe not all of them but most of them) in STH are LOTR inspired

Hi all,

I'm really laughing now because I remember Chris Robinson talking about having to sing

Led Zeppelin songs with Jimmy. He said those songs were all about witches and elves and battleships and he had no idea what Robert Plant meant.

He was a fan right lad? :D

I personally believe that the LOTR inspired songs are great. And yes, I'm pretty sure STH is LOTR-inspired, it seems to coincide with Lady Galadriel and Lothlithrien Forest. Being a huge fan of LOTR, it's great to see a rock band talk about them in their songs.

Absolutely no doubt about it:

"All that glisters is not golden" -- Shakespeare

"All that is gold does not glitter" -- Tolkien

"All that glistens is gold" -- Robert Plant

not only that but...

There's a feeling I get when I look to the west

And my spirit is crying for leaving - Possibly Galadriel looking out west towards the undying lands, where all Elves go when their spirit is not content in Middle-Earth

In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees

And the voices of those who stand looking - Possibly about Isengard or Mordor?... both achieved with Galadriel's ring Nenya

And a new day will dawn for those who stand long

And the forest will echo with laughter - Perhaps the end of Mordor and the crowning of Aragorn as king of Gondor? Or maybe also that the Ents don't have Saruman to contend with anymore

Yes there are two paths you can go by

but in the long run

There's still time to change the road you're on - Frodo's choice to take the Ring to Mt. Doom or to take the Ring for himself

I love this...... two of my fav subjects... LOTR and Led Zeppelin
