ABBA revelation: Inside band's legendary night out with Led Zeppelin

ABBA stars Benny Andersson, Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Bjorn Ulvaeus were treated to a wild night with Led Zeppelin back in the Seventies, according to unearthed claims.

By Kate Nicholson | Mon, Jan 6, 2020

ABBA were a Swedish pop group which formed in 1972. The band wrote many songs which dominated the charts throughout the Eighties, such as ‘Dancing Queen’, ‘Mamma Mia’ and ‘Waterloo’. The band was made up of Agnetha Falkshog, who wed co-star Bjorn Ulvaeus, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad who married fellow band member Benny Andersson – the band’s name itself is an acronym of all their names. The four shot to fame after starring in the Eurovision song contest and, despite splitting in 1982, their songs have gone to inspire the ‘Mamma Mia’ films and musicals in the West End.

However, despite the pop music and “squeaky clean” image the band cultivated over the years, it turns out they socialised with Led Zeppelin – a rock band who were in the limelight at a similar time.

Led Zeppelin were famous for debauchery with all-night drug-fuelled parties.

As a 2014 NME article by Emily Barker explained: “You wouldn’t have thought there’s much connecting prog-rock deviants Led Zeppelin to sugary Scandi pop crew ABBA, but here’s one: Zep recorded tracks for their ‘In Through The Out Door’ album in the ABBA’s Polar Studios.

“Legend has it ABBA’s Benny and Bjorn took Robert Plant on a night out after meeting at the Stockholm recording facility.”

Led Zeppelin star Robert Plant told Uncut in 2005 that he found himself “being silly with Benny and Bjorn from ABBA, while Agnetha and Frida are driving around trying to find which den of iniquity Led Zeppelin had taken their husbands to”.

However, representatives from ABBA have since disputed the claims.

ABBA had a very different public image from Led Zeppelin, but behind closed doors the two couples were going through difficult divorces with a great deal of conflict between the band members.

Agnetha and Bjorn divorced in 1979 when the band’s fame was at an all time high. They had two children together but just a week after the split, Bjorn had found a new girlfriend.

Both remarried, although Agnetha divorced her second husband in 1990.

Anni-Frid and Benny also divorced in 1981, and the band itself split the following year.

In a 2015 interview with Louder Sound, another member of Led Zeppelin explained how his band ended up partying with ABBA.

Guitarist Jimmy Page said: “[ABBA] contacted me. The studio was only known for ABBA and they wanted an internationally known rock group to record there, and would Led Zeppelin consider it.

“We had a chat and they said they’d be generous with studio time. We went out there in December [’78], I think. It was biting cold, snow everywhere…”

He explained:  “I met Bjorn [Ulvaeus] when I was setting up. I don’t think the others had got there then. He gave me a guitar, which was very sweet. A day later I met Benny [Andersson].

“Bjorn was the blond one? Benny was the one with the beard and the keyboard, yes? [Laughs] He was very interested in John Paul’s new toy.

“At the time Benny was still married to Frida [Lyngstad]. So we all went out to a club together one night. They were nice people.”

Jimmy added: “I was rather hoping we were going to meet Agnetha, but that wasn’t part of the deal!”

“Legend has it ABBA’s Benny and Bjorn took Robert Plant on a night out after meeting at the Stockholm recording facility.”

First of all, going out with Robert Plant in 1978 was far from “partying with Led Zeppelin”. He had cleaned himself up since the death of his son.

Led Wallet strikes again...Pagey always looking for a bargain!

Definitely a click bait article. But that time period is always an interesting one, much like when they wrote and recorded ‘Presence’ while on tax exile and recovery. Thanks for posting.

So...nothing that we didn't already know. Just regurgitated bits from previously published articles. Welcome to internet news...misleading click-bait headlines, cut+paste old interviews, no fact-checking or proofreading, waste of time.

Yet another example of Plants many regrets in life. Instead of saying "having a good time" he uses the word "Silly". Reminds me of Mrs CP & I being silly on New Years Eve in Barcelona a few years ago !!

Like I said...going out and having “a drinkie” in 1978 with Robert Plant was far different than partying with Led Zeppelin.

So going out with Benny and Bjorn "most nights" they were in Stockholm to literal "Sex Clubs", in Robert's words, with Jimmy Page is just a drink? He says "drinkie winkie" in the interview. What do you think he's gonna say exactly, lol? And the ending comment from Robert talking to the camera: "Remember that Benny and Bjorn?  We used to run away from your women"  😄

Seems pretty clear to me, those sex clubs they went to were swingers or orgy clubs. Nothing like a good old fashioned gang bang on a cold, winters night. This is the Scottish version:

ABBA TEASE MAJOR 'VOYAGE' ANNOUNCEMENT

Bryan Rolli August 27, 2021

attachment-abba.jpg.48dd3cddf87a521baacf4ffadf821855.jpg

After nearly 40 years out of the spotlight, Abba are teasing a big announcement - though it's not clear what exactly it is.

The Swedish pop icons have launched a new website inviting fans to join them on the "Abba Voyage," with a registration link to be first in line to learn about the new development. They also advertised the Abba Voyage on social media  with a poster featuring four planets and a date: Sept. 2, 2021.

In other words, all signs point to Abba sharing some big news next week. The announcement is expected to be a long-awaited hologram tour featuring the band members' younger selves, which they originally announced in 2016.

Abba have also been advertising their newly remastered music videos over the past week with a series of YouTube shorts, and this morning they shared a link to the new-and-improved "Chiquitita" video. The remastering campaign has led some fans to speculate that the band will soon open its vaults and release some never-before-heard goodies.

"Just like the Beatles and other legendary bands have done, it's time for Abba to do new remixes and release alternate takes and outtakes," on fan commented on YouTube. "Please. The fans deserve this."

Between 1972 and 1983, Abba scored nine Top 20 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including the chart-topping smash "Dancing Queen" and the No. 3-peaking "Take a Chance on Me." The group has sold an estimated 150 million records worldwide, and its Abba Gold: Greatest Hits compilation has sold 30 million copies worldwide. They've infatuated and inspired countless artists, including Motorhead's Lemmy Kilmister and Foo Fighter's Dave Grohl.

Clearly, there's still overwhelming demand for new Abba projects. In 2018, the group announced it would release two new songs, "I Still Have Faith in You" and "Don't Shut Me Down." The songs have been repeatedly delayed and to reward fan's patience, Abba announced last year that they would instead release five new songs as part of their reunion.

🤔 Someone should translate the entire Article for us !  I for one would love to read it.  I think it would be very interesting how the BRITs and The locals got along at such a monumental occasion  for In through the outdoor  AND ABBA’s studio!

(for historical purposes only of course)
