1983 NFC Championship Game. Sunday January 8, 1984. RFK Stadium, Washington DC. San Francisco 49ers (10-6) @ Washington Redskins (14-2).

The 49ers squeaked by Detroit in the Divisional round and the Redskins annihilated the Rams, allowing me to make back the money I lost betting on the Cowboys. The NFC Championship game was the first game of the day. The AFC Championship Game would follow later in the day.

Both San Francisco and Washington were loaded with players and future hall of famers. This was the first Conference Championship Game to feature the two most recent Super Bowl champions...San Francisco '81 and Washington '82. Redskins coach Joe Gibbs was 5-0 in the playoffs coming into this game, 49ers coach Bill Walsh was 4-0 entering the game. Both Joe Montana and Joe Theismann were former Notre Dame QBs. Washington was favoured by 10 points in this game. The atmosphere at RFK was electric...The Redskins should never have left RFK. What a far cry the Redskins are today.

^^^Man, Washington kicker Mark Mosely was dogshit in this game. Zero-for-four field goals until he made the last one from 20 yards to win it for the Redskins. The last of the straight-ahead style kickers and you can see why in this game.

The Redskins got bailed out by two ticky-tack pass interference calls on the 49ers on the last drive. A Raiders-49ers Battle for the California Super Bowl would have been interesting.

1983 AFC Championship Game. Sunday January 8, 1984. Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. 4pm ET. Wild Card Seattle Seahawks (10-6) @ Los Angeles Raiders (12-4).

Seattle had beaten the Raiders twice during the regular season, so I was a little worried about what tricks Seattle coach Chuck Knox might have up his sleave. Dave Krieg was the Seahawks starting QB with Jim Zorn in reserve. But really, the key was to stop Curt Warner from running wild.

The Raiders had looked good in beating the Steelers the week before, so even though the Raiders were giving 7 points on the Las Vegas line, I took the money I had won the week before and let it ride on the Raiders.

Once again I had to stay up to the wee hours to watch this game back in 1984.

Super Bowl Sunday (drum roll)

January 22, 1984. The capper to the 1983 season...Super Bowl XVIII at Tampa Stadium, Tampa Bay, Florida. The 12-4 Los Angeles Raiders meet the 14-2 defending champions Washington Redskins.

The Redskins were 3-point favourites, so just as I did in 1981 (when the Eagles were 3-point favourites over the Raiders), I took all the money I had won in the previous rounds of the playoffs and bet the Raiders to win and took the under (48 points).

Also, I made a lot of additional bets with my fellow soldiers. I couldn't get anyone to bet when the Raiders played the Seahawks or the Steelers the weeks prior...not many Seattle or Pittsburgh fans confident of their chances. But there were a lot of Redskins fans where I was stationed and they were all cocky as fuck about their team winning back-to-back Super Bowls. Especially since the Redskins had beat the Raiders in the regular season. They didn't seem to notice or care that the Raiders didn't have Marcus Allen and Mike Haynes for that game.

CBS had the broadcast so I finally got a Raider Super Bowl with Pat Summerall and John Madden, who I vastly preferred over Dick Enberg and Merlin Olsen.

Mahomes and his crazy contract is gong to hurt the team in the long run.  Too much money for one guy in this kind of sport.  It will be felt soon enough where they will be begging him to take a cut back to pay other players.

For the first time in ages I fear Miami more than NE.  But not enough for me to not pick the Bills to win the East and more. If Allen takes the next step forward the sky is the limit.

Lets hope the other 3 big sports go off without a hitch?  Fat chance

Did I miss something or is Cam Newton a Patriot, now? I'm still thinking the Fins may be a few seasons away, as far as challenging for the division crown--maybe I'll be surprised this year....

I guess news is a little slow in Florida. Hehe.

What is the over/under on days Cam Newton is a Patriot before he gets released?

I think its bullshit myself.  Is a long standing traditional team name. No ill feelings towards Indians involved.  Hell, I cant even find an Indian, even at the Casino.

That's because Indians live in India and not in North America. Jokes aside, right now the Skins have much bigger fish to fry with their latest scandal. Several people out, forced to retire and the league may force Snyder to sell the team.

How the hell this kind of garbage can be going on in 2020, after Weinstein, Ailes, O'Reilly, Rose, etc. is just beyond me. The arrogance of these jackasses is obviously beyond measure.

How are things down in Hell?  I do not wish to ever find out.  The Tomohawk variety of Indian are American raised.  You know, the cowboys and indians?  Last of the Mohicans.  Custers last  stand.  Shit like that.  LOL

I wonder if they intend to play an exhibition game?

No exhibition games. First game is Thursday September 10. Here is everything you need to know, Rick.

Thanks Sean.  Looks like they have left the schedule alone?  I’ll look at this in more detail when I get had time. Soon

I will not be surprised to see Miami beat NE straight up.  No fans, no Brady, no more fear of them.

Bills need to come out smoking.  Take care of the Jets.

II am not sold on Dallas one bit.  Think the Rams can beat them.  On opening night Houston is getting 9.5 points.  Way too much IMO.  Even though they made the stupid move of letting Watson go to Arizona, they are giving Mahomes too much credit.  He is going to come crashing down to Earth at some point.  Maybe not in this game.  But when they come to Buffalo, I hope by then a few fans can come.  After all, the Miami Dolphins are allowing 1/4 capacity and WILL HAVE FANS  at the game

I can't believe you are betting in these times. How can anyone tell who is good or how players will play in these strange conditions? It's a total crapshoot...for the Vegas sharks and the punters alike.

Come on Sean.  You can believe I AM BETTING?  SERIOUSLY?    LOL.  The Kentucky Derby is today pal.  Tiz the Law is the horse that is going to be tough to beat.  So I like 17, 16, 18 in ex box's and tri  17,16-16,18-15,3.   As for the football, the players are the same.  So just because Elvis is not in the building with his guitar screaming Go Bills, it does not mean that the cream will not rise to the top.  Look at what the Dodgers are doing with all those cardboard fans?  Just mowing them down.  A pure wrecking machine. And my Bills might do the same
